25.01.2022 #Repost @aspect_performance One of my personal favourite training tools is the @airhub_cycle The airhub allows for an increase in resistance dependent on speed. This makes those long tempo efforts so much easier and safer to perform. ... Lately @baily891 has been using the airhub to prepare for the @capeepic. The extra resistance simulates the constant load that is faced with mtb racing. See more

25.01.2022 Train hard. Carb up! #Repost @thealanaragon This post is a follow-up to my previous one. This is what separates placings in sporting events with endurance demands interspersed with high-intensity, and enables athletes to do things like, you know...win. - The key lesson from this busy graph is that carbohydrate utilization (red line) increases alongside increased intensity, while fat utilization (blue line) concurrently decreases.... - Credit to Dr. Jose Areta (faculty of Sport and Exercise Sciences, Liverpool John Moores University) for elucidating the interconnection between carbohydrate (CHO) availability, intensity, and the capacity to execute "race-winning moves. This quote of his sums up the concept nicely: - "Time trials, climbs, establishing breakaways, lead-outs and sprints are all situations that determine race winners in single-day, multi-stage and Grand Tour bike races. All race-winning moves occur at high intensity, and they are all dependent on CHO availability and utilisation. - While it's fun to spotlight your favorite low-carb, outlying endurance champs, it's no surprise that the overwhelming majority of the athletes who have dominated the full range of endurance sports throughout history have done so on a diet predominated by carbohydrate. - Key literature for those inclined to dig in (both articles are open-access full text, just google their titles): Hawley JA, Leckey JJ. 23.01.2022 What does the latest in exercise science tell us about our decisions to give up? The below study by Samuel Marcora demonstrates how perception of effort rather than our ability physically push the pedals decides when we stop exercising. By starting our training program with the understanding that the perception of effort is what holds us back we can then hack this system and gain a competitive advantage. "Chapter 11 - The cardinal exercise stopper: Muscle fatigue, muscle pain... or perception of effort?" https://www.sciencedirect.com//arti/pii/S0079612318301183 The AIRhub is the number 1 performance training tool used by elite athletes worldwide to modify their perception of effort and pace during training. We have seen changes in perception of effort so powerful that World Tour athletes write to us about their training sessions. One athlete who was in preparation for the Tour de France commented that after just 2.5hrs of AIRhub riding he had bonked so hard that he had to stop under a tree to rest and refuel. The advantage in perception of effort is so massive that even seasoned professionals and finely tuned Tour de France riders can overclock their system without noticing it. This mechanism is the basis of the improvements we see with AIRhub. Maximised training stimulus with lowered perception of effort, it’s as simple as that. Power and heart rate training targets now become significantly easier to hit, so you hold them for longer and hit them more often. The potential performance gains become obvious from the very first ride. You can train harder than your competitors without even noticing. This is why the best cyclists around the world use the AIRhub; More performance, less effort. *much of the science and posts regarding the AIRhub focuses on nutrition. We constantly stress fuelling and nutritional strategies because the training effect in an AIRhub ride can be so large you may have to start to scientifically monitor your macronutrient intake in order to keep up with the training and adaptation effect.

12.01.2022 How do you structure your training week? This images demonstrates the Microcycle principal. Almost every Amateur or Elite athlete around the world will use either the Day on, Day off or Double peak format. Periodic training systems were first developed in the 1950s and based in the highly successful Soviet Olympic training programs. In combination with the principals of the General Adaptation Syndrome by Hans Selye in 1957 all current training methodologies are based on... the physiological premise of: Alarm (training, stress or ), Resistance (adaptation to stimulus) Exhaustion (inadequate recovery, over training). The art of developing a successful fitness program is grounded in understanding and balancing these 3 factors. The first step to improving training consistency is by focusing on what type of training session you will have today and where that fits within your Microcycle. If you ignore the rules of the Microcycle you will fall into the exhaustion stage of Adaptation Theory and performance will go backwards. 10.01.2022 Earlier this week Mick bought an AIRhub. This is what he has to say about his new training tool. Michael thank you so much for all your assistance I love this product. What can I say about airhub? Well to start I’m 45 years old 6 FT around the 85-90 kg no racer by any means however I love training and traveling with my road bike and mountain bike.I regularly play on Sufferfest and zwift also to train and improve. My current FTP 291 so this gives people a good idea I’m no at...hlete. I heard about this product in a small bunch ride a few weeks ago and now there is one planted in my bike. I was skeptical about this product going hmmm arrhhhh kind of thing then I really read into the science of training with the air hub. A couple of quick phone calls to Michael and I was convinced. So the out come I love this product it rides so well. 2 rides in and I see the benefits and know the gains are coming it’s in the data. It a serious no nonsense set up put wheel in and ride. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who is serious about there training and to improve there results Benefits for me 1. Consistent resistance and fatigue training ie: Time under tension. 2. Ride with my mates that are not as strong second ride 125 km this was proven. 3. Knocking down some speed in highly dense cycling and commuter traffic on bike pathways 4.Using the Air hub as a training tool just like indoor it’s a tool. Anyway it’s a personal journey and it’s total value for me. Might even enter a race and see how I go. Thanks again Michael keep up the good work. Thanks Mick! Good luck with your training! #fromwhereiride #butfirstcoffee #cyclingphotos #cyclingmotivation #cyclingshots #prolife #photography #ridewa #cyclist #outsideisfree #love #photooftheday #style #lifebehindbars #awesome #bikelove #sport #travel #summer #westernaustralia #beach #mountain #morningglory #airhub #hublyfe See more

10.01.2022 What are the expected physiological adaptations for training in different zones? The photo attached is the work of Dr Andy Coggan, the Author of Training and Racing with a Power Meter and founder of the smart training movement we see today. The table outlines the expected physiological improvement for training completed in each of the 7 zones.... We can see from this chart that training above Vo2 max does little to improve our lactate threshold or improve glycogen storage; two of the major contributors to exercise performance. Tempo and Threshold work deliver the biggest training adaptations and this is why they form the basis of a high performance training program. AIRhub is the number 1 tool for generating more time in Tempo and Threshold zones and this is why it’s the choice of world class athletes. As used by Record breaking Ironmen and Athletes on 8 different World Tour cycling Teams, the AIRhub puts you into the most effective training zones at the press of a button. The AIRhub resistance is specific to you and your training time. Most cyclist don’t have the time to ride their bike all day, that’s why smart training using the AIRhub always delivers quick results. A 40minute high resistance ride around the suburb is enough to activate all the physiological adaptations listed in the chart above. It’s possible to apply the maximal adaptation for the minimum training dose by training smart. To read more about smart time effective training have a quick google for Andy Coggan’s work and be sure to read some of the www.AIRhub.com.au training blogs. The 2x 20minute training session and the Sweet Spot concept is just some of his work.

09.01.2022 A normalised power of 4.5w/kg for 6:46:41 is what it took Michael Woods to podium at the hardest World Championships in recent history. Phillipp Diegner has done a climb by climb analysis on the Innsbruck World Championships Road Race based on the Strava times and power data of Mike Woods. The very first climb of the day was a shock to the system and it took 5.86w/kg for 10min just to make it over with the peloton on the Gnadenwald climb. The bunch then relaxed into a more m...anageable pace close to 5w/kg for the next 4 ascents of the 16minute climb IGLS before the pace lifted to an unsustainable 5.5w/kg on the way to the final climb. The peak 8minute power of the day was 6.59w/kg on the impossibly steep Innsbruck Hell climb. This was where the final selection was made and ultimately a World Championship podium place secured. 03.01.2022 Are you struggling with low Iron? There is a fair chance that you eat a healthy balanced diet with with adequate iron levels, but your body just won’t absorb it. The below scientific review describes the way that the muscle derived stress hormone Interleukin 6 (Il-6) blocks the uptake of Iron in the gut and can lead to low serum Iron levels. Energy balance and muscle glycogen levels can dramatically influence Il-6 levels and this stress response may lead to a chronic malabs...Continue reading
