25.01.2022 VALE Senja Robey BEM Photo by Sue Stafford. Reproduced courtesy of our wonderful friends at the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (2020), for the cover of Issue 268 Airnews Magazine

25.01.2022 Back in March this year, AWPA member Georgia Croft flew her CPL hot air balloon test, passing with flying colours and cementing herself as Australia’s youngest female commercial balloon pilot. Well, for the time being, anyway - word has it that Mia Fraser (@miasfraser) and Scarlett Saunders (@scarlettsaunderss) are smashing out the CPL theory during the Covid grounding - flaming hot on the trail! So fantastic to be watching these girls kick goals and guarantee another generation of passionate balloonists to carry on that lighter-than-air legacy Bronni Bowen (@bronni)

23.01.2022 http:// WINTER IS HERE \\ On the 14th of April, the Australian Women Pilots’ Association lost one of its lionhearted foundation and life members, as Senja Robey BEM quietly passed away after a lifetime devoted to aviation - and the women in it. The August issue of @airnewsmagazine honours Senja (covergirl!), regaling fond memories and tales of her own, and others, of her involvement in Australian aviation and the conception of the AWPA, filled with the cheek and laughter that we...’ve come to associate with stories of Senja. VALE Senja Robey BEM @airnewsmagazine Issue 268 Winter Edition due PO Boxes end of August

16.01.2022 In ‘A Glide to Remember’, AWPA Member, Dominique Brassier, recounts the ups and downs experienced in Lake Keepit during the cross-country season opener last year. A fascinating insight into potential conditions experienced when there are ‘Charlie-bangers’ hanging around! Featured in the March Issue of Airnews Magazine, due PO Boxes in a week. PS today is the last day to renew your membership and get your hands on this issue ... Photo by Val Phillips - Lake Keepit Soaring Club

15.01.2022 http:// WHO'S COMING? \\

14.01.2022 On this day, back in 1998, AWPA member Felicity Brown set off to compete in her very first RFDS Outback Air Race - just 11 days after obtaining her PPL (there may have been a bet involved)! It was a move that changed the course of everything, sparking a career and lifetime in aviation. A truly ripper story, you can read the whole lot in the upcoming issue of Airnews Magazine, due out end of August. It's been a wild ride the last few months, and although it's rolled off the pr...ess a bit behind normal schedule (what is normal, these days?! ), we really hope the Winter 2020 issue brings you hope, encouragement and a coupl'a belly laughs to boot. 14.01.2022 There’s been loads of flying into huge airports with all this global pandemic carry on - here’s AWPA member, Angela Stevenson, hanging with the ground crew at Tullamarine a few months ago, when the Lilydale Flying Club landed the first GA formation (in living memory, anyway!) on the oversized tarmac in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Thoughts to our girls and ladies in Victoria still under Australia’s most stringent lockdown regs - we love and miss you, and can’t wait to see you in the air again soon

13.01.2022 How does the idea of flying a C172 into an international airport with a 45m wide runway make you feel? AWPA member, Shannae Terrill, took advantage of the Covid-related lull in commercial operations to try it for herself (dragging co-pilot/moral support Isabella Moore along for the ride)! You can read all about Shannae's touch-and-go at Perth International and the processes involved in the Winter edition of Airnews Magazine - due PO boxes end of August. 12.01.2022 Scarlett Saunders of Global Ballooning Australia may be young, but she’s the only woman in Australia with an altitude record in a hot air balloon - and it's not one to scoff at! Read all about it in the March issue of Airnews Magazine, due in PO boxes next week!

10.01.2022 You have to manage all these tasks at once and be calm, cool, and collected. You have to be happy and enjoy it so you can think. ~ B-52 test pilot Christin Hart Voor. Some deep wisdom here. It’s hard to think straight if you’re bent out of shape!

08.01.2022 http:// FILL ME WITH HYDROGEN AND CALL ME A BALLOON! \\ Do you remember the 1988 Trans Australia Balloon Challenge? Ruth Wilson, veritable ballooning royalty, says she'd love to see something similar to that historical pièce de résistance of aviation in Australia by next year. "More work needs to be done as it is still in the discovery stage... I am working to find funds and sufficient hydrogen [sponsorship] to organise a gas balloon distance race here in Australia."... Gas ballooning is a bit different to the commercial hot air ballooning we are used to here in Aus and is most well-known by the prestigious, annual International Gordon Bennett Cup, in which Ruth herself competed in 1999! In fact, this could quite possibly be the very first time gas ballooning is represented in Australia, which is very exciting indeed. In the meantime, you can bury yourself in the archives and become inspired by following the Trans Australia Balloon Challenge 1988 page, which is filled with beautiful, grainy film photographs and stories from the incredible event. The excitement and adventure are palpable.

07.01.2022 http:// SECOND LAST DAY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS! \\ Have you applied?

07.01.2022 Finger's crossed for a pronounced lack of Coronavirus! Get planning, anyway - it'll do you good!

07.01.2022 http:// In the wake of International Women's' Day \\

07.01.2022 Stuck at home, currently? Check out this beautiful short documentary about some other women with perhaps similar constitutions to our own as pilots (maybe a little bit daredevil? ha ha), motorcyclists. You should have plenty of time now to make some radical plans! What's on your list?

06.01.2022 Everybody’s suffered a grounding lately, and the frustrations of those stuck on terra firma have revealed themselves in many shapes and forms. One of the more exciting things to come out of Covid-19 was the Virtual Nav Challenge; brain-child of Victorian AWPA member, Nicole Collins, who was inspired to whack one together in place of the annual trial that happens every year at our National Conference - meant to happen in Broken Hill this year, but rudely postponed to 2021 due ...to the global pandemic. Freed of a lot of the constraints of conventional navigation exercises (lets up the size of the fuel payload exponentially, why not!), Nicole designed and hosted a few on-ground exercises for members of the the AWPA to enjoy earlier this year. Nothing like keeping those skills sharp while we wait for things to improve - if ya don’t use it, ya lose it! Read all about it in the Winter edition of @airnewsmagazine, a bit late but better than never, due PO Boxes end of August.

04.01.2022 Scholarships are open now, applications due 31 Jan so get in quick!

03.01.2022 Featuring a dreamy cover by Ben Savage (https://savagecreative.co/), the final issue of Airnews Magazine for the year 2020 is in the post and on its way to Australian Women Pilots' Association members nationwide. Wishing you all a very merry festive season!

02.01.2022 See our girls fly up!

01.01.2022 http:// Heading to Broken Hill for the Conference early April? Fancy a little additional adventure along the way? \\ You could visit Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, just across the border into SA. This geological and astronomical mecca is one of Australia's national treasures, and the people you'll meet on the ground here will double your obsession with our incredible country. Head to https://www.arkaroola.com.au/ for further details and to book.
