19.01.2022 An Open Letter to CCR Instructors, Instructor Trainers, Certification Agencies, and CCR Manufacturers I am becoming increasingly more concerned about the seemin...gly growing tendency to short cut the system in order to create more CCR divers and instructors. Rarely does a day pass in which instructors and instructor trainers do not make social media posts highlighting practices which are clearly standards violations, not to mention poor teaching methods. Weekend super courses, administrative crossovers, classes which are little more than fun dives, courses taught with the instructor on open circuit, depth guidelines exceeded, inappropriate gasses, faulty equipment, O2 cells out of date, inappropriate dive sites for particular class, required skills glossed over or skipped altogether, checklists ignored, inadequate bailout, unit specific skills taught incorrectly, poor health, diving impaired, minimum number of required dives and hours ignored, prerequisites ignored, and the list goes on and on. Instructor Trainers must accept much of the blame for this phenomenon due to the fact that many of the instructor courses conducted do not follow agency or manufacturer’s requirements. How is it possible for an instructor candidate to become a diver and an instructor on a new CCR unit in the same 2-day weekend? Does this make sense to anyone? Standards and procedures are in place to protect manufacturers, ITs, Instructors and most importantly the students. When instructor trainers knowingly violate standards and procedures during an instructor course, they are creating an avalanche of bad practices which will unfortunately spread exponentially! When we read about fatalities and mishaps, we often shake our head and say, What was that guy thinking when he did that? Well, it’s often not really that hard to understand why people do what they do if you look at how they were trained. Of course, sometimes students leave class and just make poor decisions afterwards irrespective of the quality training that they receive, but many times there is a direct correlation between a poorly taught instructor course and the continuation of substandard teaching and practices downstream. As they say, garbage in, garbage out. Agencies, which knowingly allow instructor trainers and instructors to continue to break standards are also culpable as far as I am concerned. And of course, manufacturers who continue to do business with training agencies that don’t police their own ITs and instructors need their head examined. In an environment where the overall diving industry is purportedly in decline (some say as much as 3% per year), we need to focus on raising the bar to ensure that students receive quality instruction which coincidentally is proven to increase retention, reduce risk to divers, and helps to promote the sport. Divers who are comfortable in the water continue to dive. Those that are not comfortable, do not. End of story! Instructors who are ill prepared to teach CCR courses are incapable of producing a quality product and even more concerning are those ITs who are knowingly breaking standards and train the next generation of CCR instructors to disrespect the standards through their own example. There are much easier ways to make money in life than teaching diving. If the passion is gone, time to make a career change. Shortchanging students through poor quality classes is my opinion one of the greatest challenges that we face as an industry and nowhere is it more apparent that in the CCR community. I could go on ad nauseam with examples of students, instructors, instructor trainers, training agencies and manufacturers who knowingly make poor decisions with regards to training, but I think we all are equally aware of the problems that exist within our niche community. As leaders in our industry, I plead with you to personally evaluate your individual training practices and lead the way through a recommitment to personal and institutional integrity. We all know what needs to happen, it is up to each of us individually to ensure that it does happen and not wait for others to solve the problem. Respectfully yours, Randy Thornton

07.01.2022 Hi Everyone, For those that might not be aware of the latest news, I am now back in Australia. The Solomon Islands are an amazing place but sadly my main work there didn't work out with the whole Covid issue. I am contemplating doing up the AIS Diving website again and thought I would reach out and see what people wanted to see on the website. I don't see the point of making a page for every course I teach like OW or AOW etc.... What are your thoughts on what works as far as a website goes?? Thank you Pierre
