22.01.2022 Tiwi College students have been busy completing a Remembrance Day wreath honouring those who died fighting in Australia’s Frontier Wars. The Frontier War Wreat...h project has been created under the guidance of Rusinya Brooks, is a senior student at the college undertaking a traineeship in the college’s Art Learning Space. For Rusinya, making art is a way to share stories about Australia’s history with younger students, educating them about the 140-year conflict beginning with the arrival of the European colonists to Australia in 1788. Remembering this conflict is an important step for Rusinya in the process of reconciliation. ‘You can look at history books and use whiteboards, but you can’t expect a non- indigenous person to understand us and our way of life without sitting down with us and looking each other in the eye and connecting. This war started with people not understanding each other and I think an important part of reconciliation is really listening to each other.’ Rusinya Brooks

Classes stopped while the Ode was read by Grace Fowler... on the 7-9 campus and Rhys Harley on the 10-12 campus followed by one minute of silence to remember those Australians who have died or suffered as a result of all wars and armed conflicts. The Year 9 Humanities classes have placed some of their model trenches and tanks from WWI on display in the front office of the 7-9 campus. Pictured here is the display and Grace and Stazia Fowler with Defence mentor Sheryl Schmode. See more
