17.01.2022 Our infectious disease dynamics expert Dr Michael Meehan, is developing a world-leading system to model and analyse the spread of infectious diseases, such as COVID-19. Dr Meehan will use genetic sequencing data to reconstruct epidemic outbreaks, to enable rapid and effective disease surveillance. 14.01.2022 A new test that can detect malaria in the blood using magnetic technology, developed by the Institute's Dr Stephan Karl and partners at the Burnet Institute and Universität Augsburg is another step towards the World Health Organization (WHO) target of global elimination of the #mosquito-borne disease. Malaria kills thousands of people a year, with a reported 229 million cases and 409,000 deaths in 2019. 01.01.2022 Professor Zoltan Sarnyai is a neuroscientist at James Cook University’s Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine, talks to Channel 7 about whether psychedelic drugs can be beneficial in treating addiction. Use of the illegal street drug MDMA in assisted psychotherapy for post-traumatic stress disorder is being investigated in the US, Canada and Israel and it could be available on prescription in the US as early as 2022, Professor Sarnyai said.
