STATEMENT The artwork ‘Break Apart’ depicts physical disturbance as a metaphor for sudden and unexpected emotional perturbance. I illustrated this by referring to a beloved locale in the Frankston community. The Frankston Pier, situated within the ‘Gateway to the Mornington Peninsula’ is an icon for the visitors, the local fisher’s, and businesses. A year ago, there was destructive weather that caused a part of the pier to snap apart. The stormy sea shown on the right of the painting symbolizes how life is full of dramatic changes, which so often cause emotional imbalance. The human figure in the center of the painting reflects a feeling of depression. The figure is fighting to hang on, is lost and is uncertain of what the future will bring. This concept coupled with the contrast between light and shadow across the composition represent my musings on the circular nature of human condition, dealing with change, and looking to the future.
