22.01.2022 The Prime Minister [Scott Morrison (ScoMo)] told the National Press Club: 'We must learn from Indigenous Australians and their ancient practices on how to impr...ove our resilience to these threats.' Well, Prime Minister, listen to this speech. The lesson is right here in front of you. The action you can take is right now. We have the knowledge of these rangers right across the country who are willing to give that to you. - Senator Malarndirri McCarthy - Northern Territory We reckon this speech hits the nail on the head. The fires that have impacted us all over the last 7 months haven’t been confined to the south east of Australia. Indigenous rangers working on Indigenous Protected Areas and beyond have been working tirelessly nationwide year-round to protect lives and country from extreme fires. As Senator McCarthy reports: Warddeken Land Management Rangers' fire season started in May and continued to the New Year. Many rangers had to give up their Christmas breaks to keep fires under control. Thankfully, the rains have started in the Top End and rangers can take a well-earned break. The Bunya Peoples' Aboriginal Rangers in Queensland have spent years building relationships with local landowners, shires, parks and fire services to share their knowledge and expertise to help mitigate, fight and recover from the fires. In NSW, the Minyumai IPA and Wattle Ridge and Tarriwa Kurrukun IPA’s were both hit hard by fire. The teams did everything right in terms of preparation cultural and hazard reduction burns and work alongside local firies and park rangers but the extreme conditions still heavily impacted their country. In WA, Ngadju traditional owners have seen fires rip through the vitally important Greater Western Woodlands, cutting off the Nullabor Highway. Ngadju have a new Indigenous ranger team and are preparing to declare an Indigenous Protected Area. With long term planning and the hard work of rangers and traditional owners, the threat of severe fires will be reduced. The newly World Heritage-listed Budj Bim cultural landscape has also been affect by fires in Western Victoria. The local Indigenous ranger and IPA crew worked to with local fireis to ensure important cultural sites were protected. Thankfully for the Gunditjmara people, no major damage has been reported at this stage. Thinking of you Gunditj Mirring and Winda-Mara. Sadly, Mogo Local Aboriginal Land Council and their ranger team, lost a lot of their buildings and equipment. They will need support to rebuild and get back to their vital work caring for country. These are just a few examples of the incredible work traditional owners and Indigenous rangers put into managing fire around Australia. The government needs to do a whole lot more to support them. We're calling to double funding and secure longer term security for Indigenous rangers and Indigenous Protected Areas. PS Country Needs People will never tell you who to vote for. We believe Indigenous rangers and Indigenous Protected Areas are something all sides of politics should get behind. So, when a pollie says something good about Indigenous rangers, we make sure we let you know. PPS - We’re about taking real action in challenging times. We think that fire management in Australia is a complex field that needs a multifaceted, creative, well-resourced and partnership-driven approach. More, properly resourced Indigenous rangers and Indigenous Protected Areas is an important piece of the puzzle. Together, we are stronger.

13.01.2022 ajar architects is pleased to post this letter received yesterday - excellent news! We whole-heartedly support leafy urban developments at the right scale with people as the pinnacle of decision trees, however, what was proposed was 18 high rise units, amongst smaller offerings, towering above the outdoor amphitheatre and glorious Botanic Gardens. In December last year (2019) and again in February this year (2020), we advocated for townhouse style developments in-line with existing successful patterns of urban density and leafy tropical living.
