20.01.2022 Ma A U () are 3 letters you will hear & see in many sacred scripts in prayers, on amulets, yantra and most #sakyant designs. But what does it mean? Again like most esoteric applications, it depends. It can represent the Buddhist triple gem of the Buddha, Dharma & Sangkha. In Thai it is called Heart Mantra of the Tripitaka (,) also the well-known mantra of the Buddhanussati or commonly known as the Itipiso mantra () recollecting the qu...alities of the Buddha, Dharma & Sangkha is also encapsulated in this short mantra. Ma comes from Manussanam buddho bhagavati () for the Buddha, A comes from Akaliko ehipassiko () for the Dharma, and finally U for Ujupatipanno bhagavato savakasangho () for the Sangkha. Some Ajarn say the triple gem should be represented as A (Arahang - Buddha), U (Uttaratam - Dharma), and Ma (Mahasangkha - Sangkha.) It can also represent the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Shiva & Vishnu. The letters can also be arranged as A U Ma to represent the cosmic sound Om. While this actually reads as Pu, it is a conjoined syllable with Taa - due to the writing of Khom letters, double syllables will join, the subscript consonant written under the preceding consonant - but I digress. This third (conjoined) syllable represents the 3rd Buddha of our present #kalpa (aeon,) Buddha Kassapa (.) We say that there's... nothing special because even when you do see things like that, your defilements are still the same as they always were and with some people, their defilements get even worse. They think that they're somebody special because they can see various things, and so they aren't willing to bow down or show respect to anyone else. 01.01.2022 Understanding the most common kata (mantra) seen in Thai sacred geometry - Namo Puttaya (). Most of the script you see used in #sakyant are abbreviated prayers which helps in a few ways; saves space, hides deeper esoteric meanings etc. This particular #mantra has many levels to understand, as a whole, and individually. Namo Puttaya simply means to pay respect to the Buddha as the enlightened one. Each letter also pays homage to the 4 past Buddha of the prese...nt #kalpa (an aeon,) including the most recent one (Gotama,) and the coming 5th Buddha (Meitreya,) which gives the mantra another well-known name Phra Putta Jao Haa Phra Ongk or the 5 Buddhas. They also can represent the 5 elements of water, earth, fire, wind and space/ether/nothing. In this post we will concentrate on the first letter Na (). Kakusandha Buddha was a huge man, over 18 metres tall, and lived for over 40,000 years. The letter Na also represents the element of water, and the Buddhist expression of #compassion which in Pali is called metta # to show sympathy & concern for the suffering and misfortunes of others.
