25.01.2022 School Strike 4 Climate (SS4C) - Young people of today are our future leaders; innovators; thinkers; inventors; planners; scientists and global citizens. Young people think about the climate, environment, animal protection and protecting the planet. Some youth choose to express their concern through SS4C, a youth led movement of school students who started by skipping school on Fridays to demonstrate to demand action from political leaders to take action to 1) prevent climate... change, and 2) for the fossil fuel industry to transition to renewable energy. We must not delay in taking action to protect our precious blue planet - I will always advocate for council initiatives on climate change. We must not delay in taking action to address the climate emergency...and this is why people are holding governments to account. We need to lead the way in inspiring change; supporting and educating our communities; building sustainability into our daily lives, communities and countries; and enabling people to keep connected to the natural environment, before it disappears. https://www.schoolstrike4climate.com/about

24.01.2022 Thank you to Goldfield Community News for their recent article about my colleague, Bryn Hills, Animal Justice Party Candidate - Ballarat Council 2020 - and my, Julie Sloan Animal Justice Party Candidate - Bendigo Council 2020 - announcement of our candidacies for next month's local government elections. Bendigo and Ballarat have traditionally been rivals, but I stand united with my AJP counterpart in Ballarat, Bryn Hills, in our quest to create a better world for all animals... and people at the local government level. Bryn is standing as an Animal Justice Party-endorsed candidate for Ballarat Council's North Ward. My name is Bryn Hills and I reside in Alfredton where I am married to Alison and am a proud father to Anna and Peggy. I am also fortunate to have Charlie my canine friend as a constant companion," reads a statement from his campaign page. "I have worked in State education for 26 years and am currently teaching at Ballarat High School where I have been employed since 1999 in a job that I love." "I share the Animal Justice Party core values and timeless principles of; Kindness, Equality, Rationality and Non-violence which is why I am standing as an AJP candidate. It is these qualities that I will use as a lens to make decisions if elected as a councillor." "I believe that all inhabitants of local council areas should be extended kindness and compassion. This includes both animals and people. In doing so, we create an environment that benefits everyone." Julie is standing as an Animal Justice Party-endorsed candidate in the City of Greater Bendigo's Whipstick Ward. "I campaign for the honour of representing you at Council on a platform of animal and threatened species protection, sustainable environmental outcomes and promotion of community health and wellbeing," reads a statement from her campaign page. "My commitment is to accountable, transparent community engagement and consultation and acting in the best interests of the community." "Whipstick Ward is a wonderful place with its parks and lakes, gorgeous gardens, wildlife, community and family spaces, recreation reserves, inclusive and friendly neighborhoods and fantastic local traders." "My vision for Whipstick Ward is of a vibrant, resilient, and engaged community, proud of its culture and heritage; proud of its environmental and animal protection; proud of its thriving economy; proud of its programs and services; proud of its City and townships; and proud of its people." 24.01.2022 My name is Julie Sloan and I am proud to be your local endorsed Animal Justice Party candidate for Whipstick Ward - My campaign is built around three foundation pillars - 1) protection of animals and threatened species; 2) sustainable environmental outcomes for our planet and climate;... 3) enhanced community health and wellbeing for everyone. I care deeply about the following issues and will actively advocate funding and resources to develop and sustain these areas for current and future generations - >>jobs growth; economic development; business support; reducing carbon emissions; renewable energy development; youth wellbeing; entry level jobs for young people; better skill and education pathways; reconciliation and healing on country; ease of access to universal early years services; family and community parks and play-areas; sustaining our parks and forests; connected cycling and commuting networks into the CBD; sports and recreation spaces; more respite options; carer support; senior wellbeing; green community spaces; secure water supply; sustainable wildlife corridors; resource management and circular economy; enhancing our unique biodiversity and ecosystems.
23.01.2022 Bendigo's existing landfill is running out of space - as our consumption spirals, maximizing local 'reuse-recover-repair-recycle' systems makes sense. Bendigo’s population is growing by around 1,500 additional residents annually - the way we manage our resources to protect our environment, climate, animals and people has never been more important. I am committed to securing funding from a range of sources including the State Government to develop and expand local economies ...and sustainable infrastructure that will meet current and future local needs. I support - 1) transitioning to a zero waste to landfill 2) generating 100% local renewable energy 3) allocating resources to move from waste to resource management https://www.bendigo.vic.gov.au//City-of-Greater-Bendigo-En Evidence shows the impacts of waste on wildlife and eco-systems are different. While there is a place for a circular economy (items are used, collected, recovered, re-used), nothing replaces measuring and addressing the impacts on wildlife and environment to minimise our eco-footprint, something I am committed to undertaking locally to protect our animals, threatened species, environment and climate. https://animaljusticeparty.org//Animal-Justice-Party-Waste

A place that needs us all to work together to obtain optimal, sustainable outcomes for our animals, environment and people by acting in the best interest of the community. https://www.bendigoadvertiser.com.au//thirty-two-bendigo/

I will be a voice for the community at Council and am committed to working with residents with transparency, accountability and in the best interests of the community. 14.01.2022 City of Greater Bendigo - Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) Section 68A of the Domestic Animal Act 1994 (DAA) requires Council to develop a new DAMP every 4 years. *1 Our current DAMP expires in 2021. With Greater Bendigo having one of the highest levels of companion animal (dog and cat) ownership in Victoria,18 dogs and 6 cats for every 100 people, "the primary aim of the Plan is to improve animal management within the City of Greater Bendigo." *2.... The development of our next DAMP presents us with a valuable opportunity to not only meet DAA requirements, but to - 1) re-scope, re-purpose and re-vision; 2) secure resources for relevant service expansion; 3) refocus programs and services; 4) inspire community participation. I will advocate for and seek resources for sustainable initiatives aiming to - improve systems, including s84Y arrangements, that increase rehoming; improve rehousing, foster care and and adoption programs; increase desexing, identification and registration; enhance programs offering reduced fees; decrease convenience euthanasia to zero; refocus efforts to engage and promote responsible companion animal care with all communities. *1, 2 - Domestic Animal Management Plan, City of Greater Bendigo, 2016-2021. https://www.bendigo.vic.gov.au//20160713_Domestic_Animal_M

11.01.2022 The following values are timeless principles that underpin the character of the Animal Justice Party. In negotiating outcomes on a range of issues, our elected representatives are guided by these principles at all times. KINDNESS - We maintain empathy for all beings that can experience the world, and will work towards minimising the suffering and pain of all. We will fight for animals, and also for rescuers, carers and helpers, and the powerless in society.... RATIONALITY - As the best representatives of animals we can be, we will use our brains and our party processes to develop sustainable and evidence based policy, sensibly reforming society to make a better life for all. NON-VIOLENCE - The practice of being harmless to yourself and others under all conditions, springing from the belief that outcomes are possible without hurting people, animals or the environment. We will work towards improved wellbeing for all while avoiding violence to any. We recognise the need for defence, without the need for aggressive wars of intervention and control over resources. EQUALITY - Animals have vastly different abilities and are diverse in their forms. They all have interests and can live and work together in harmony. The question is not, Can they reason? nor, Can they talk? but rather, Can they suffer? In their suffering, many animals are our equals. We are a party of non-speciesism, giving all individuals their due consideration. Moreover, the feelings of all humans must be considered in decision-making, regardless of worldview, gender or sexual preference, economic view, occupation, location, age, wealth or abilities. The best society is the one that is designed to be fair to all. We will work for equal consideration for all animals and people, with due regard to their respective interests and capabilities We will fight for a society that celebrates and accepts diversity. https://animaljusticeparty.org/our-values/

04.01.2022 Resource Management - reduce-reuse-recycle Today I visited the Eaglehawk Landfill Recycling Eco-Centre Centre to see how things are progressing. Aware that the Eaglehawk Landfill Site is nearing the end of its life, I was delighted to see the Recycling Centre continuing to attract interested locals in search of a pre-loved item to take home to reuse and repurpose into its new life! ... The Recycling Centre is jam-packed with items from bikes to wheelbarrows; pots and pipes; hardware and wine-racks; loungechairs, tables, lamps; and much more - but, most importantly, these items are NOT ending up in Landfill. In previous postings I outlined my interest in eco-friendly, reuse-recycling schemes. Greater Bendigo needs appropriate funding to effectively manage the growth in this industry while developing resoure management infrastructure and community programs of the future. Management of resources, including reducing consumption, avoiding landfill, promoting circular economies, and developing recovery-reuse hubs are areas we need to remain focused on for now and into the future for our planet, animals and people. The Animal Justice Party has 5 Key Objectives in this area - 1. To invest in further development of biodegradable products and work toward the banning of harmful plastics (see our Marine Animals policy). 2. To encourage recycling and composting programs in businesses and public institutions and educate the public about waste issues. 3. To stop the dumping of clothing and edible food by retailers and to ensure these products are sent to people in need. 4. To invest in innovative enterprises which are reducing and reusing waste. 5. To oppose planned obsolescence and barriers to repairing or upgrading consumer goods We aim to eliminate food waste and environmental pollution while reducing energy and material use. We support recycling and a circular economy where these have positive impacts. We recognise that the environmental problems we face ultimately also require a reduction in consumption and an end to the consumption of animals - (see our policies on Population and Farming) https://animaljusticeparty.org//Animal-Justice-Party-Waste
