25.01.2022 A former greyhound trainer convicted of live baiting offences has won the right to attend thoroughbred race meetings through the Victorian Racing Tribunal. Remember Darren McDonald? He was disqualified in December 2015 for 20 years for live baiting offences described as barbaric, vile and abhorrent. Paints quite the picture of the racing industry doesnt it?

25.01.2022 I am sharing this video to reiterate how important it is that animals are represented in our political systems. The path I choose to take in my role is a proactive one. I wont always agree with the government, but where I can, I would prefer to work with them to achieve positive outcomes. ... Todays announcement to reopen pet grooming in Melbourne as of September 28 for animal welfare reasons is a clear example of that. To some, it might seem small, but for many matted dogs and cats across metro Melbourne as we head into warm weather - this is a great outcome. Thank you to those from the grooming and veterinary community who worked with me to achieve this. Andy Meddick MP

25.01.2022 You might remember that earlier this year, Andy Meddick MP called for cooling systems for the flying fox colonies at Colac and Warrnambool Botanic Gardens. We're pleased to announce that Andy's calls on the government have come through! Heat stress events are fatal for our precious native bats and cooling systems will literally save their lives. They're also effective in protecting the broad-leafed plant varieties in the gardens.

24.01.2022 Please take care of your best friends during these warmer months! Hot cars, hot pavements and limited access to water are killers for pooches! We shouldn't need to remind people but we must. Please share this post widely

23.01.2022 This motion should receive support from parties across the political spectrum. If passed, it will be an important first step to protect companion animals in homes with family violence and, importantly, it will remove barriers to leaving a violent home too - by making it easier for victim-survivors to take their animals with them. Lilydales Kinley Kangaroos are in good hands should the translocation plan be approved

22.01.2022 URGENT - ANIMAL WELFARE REFORM FOR VICTORIA The current law that aims to protect animals from cruelty, POCTA, fails to adequately protect animals which became clear during the recent Inquiry into Animal Activism. We have provided some guidelines and additional material to assist you in completing th...e online survey and you can write your own submission. + https://www.ajpvic.org.au/animal_welfare_reform_submission_ + https://engage.vic.gov.au/new-animal-welfare-act-victoria *THE CLOSING DATE FOR THIS IS MIDNIGHT 14TH DECEMBER 2020

21.01.2022 Following the almost unanimous support for his motion for pound and shelter reforms in Victoria, Andy Meddick MP has asked the Victorian Treasurer to allocate at least $1 million for our state's hardworking animal rescue groups in this year's budget. The successful motion is an important step towards ending convenience killing however we need to ensure that rescue groups have the support they need to save as many animals as possible. We'll get an answer on this next week.

20.01.2022 ++ Trigger Warning - Animal Cruelty ++ "Paul Brian Walton was sentenced to 12 months’ prison combined with a two-and-a-half year community correction order by the County Court of Victoria on Friday. The 53-year-old had only been released from jail a few months earlier. He was previously convicted for very similar offences involving three dogs." How anyone can do this to such a completely innocent sentient being is unfathomable. How a sentence of only 12 months is appropriat...e is hard to understand when the rape of human animals gets multiple years. As traumatic and frustrating it is to hear about such atrocities there is no point simply venting or wishing harm on the perpetrator. We need to turn frustration into action! So, what can we do about it?! Currently, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act is being reviewed and open for public consultation. Please participate in this review and complete the survey and/or make a submission. Assistance with the completing the survey is available on ours and Andy Meddick MPs website. https://www.ajpvic.org.au/animal_welfare_reform_submission_

20.01.2022 The Australian Government is again shirking away from its responsibilities to protect and conserve world heritage. "In an interim report on the EPBC Act released in July, Graeme Samuels found the laws to protect unique species and habitats were ineffective. Despite the findings, the Morrison government has proposed legislation to allow bilateral agreements with the states and territories to give them control over planning approvals as a means to cut approval times and spur economic growth."

20.01.2022 Julie Sloan is our candidate for Bendigo Council, Whipstick Ward, and is a generous, thoughtful and organised human being. Bendigo would be served enormously with a woman like Julie on the council. Please follow her page for more information on her campaign to raise animal issues at local government level and to win a seat on council. You can support her financially here: www.ajpvic.org.au/juliesloanbendigo2020

20.01.2022 "This is a small scale poultry abattoir at night. Everyone who is to be slaughtered in the morning waits squashed in crates until the ultimate horror of their life begins at dawn. These particular hens came from a free range egg farm. We had a tracker on the truck for some time so were able to see what farms the hens were coming from. The kindest thing to do is cut eggs out of your diet instead of looking for the "kindest" eggs because "kind eggs" dont exist. The Price Of Eggs" Our farming policy details that we recognise that some animal industries inflict less pain than others however all involve significant suffering and ultimately the taking of life. This includes "free range" farms. The kindest thing you can do for animals is to not eat them. The Price of Eggs image & words by Tamara Kenneally Photography

19.01.2022 In a quiet move, while Victorians are distracted by the holiday period, the Andrews Labor Government has authorised the sale of wild kangaroo meat for human consumption. The new rules set to take effect on 1 January 2021 could mean tens of thousands of our precious native kangaroos will be brutally shot and killed for human consumption. Joeys left orphaned will be bludgeoned - and right now, it is completely legal.... This is an expansion beyond the government's cruel program to kill kangaroos for pet food - and we have to do all we can to fight it! Send an URGENT email to save Victorian kangaroos! - https://animaljusticepartyvictoria.good.do/kangaroosh/email

19.01.2022 Why would our candidates choose to be endorsed when running for local council? Charlie Vincent who is standing for Alpine Shire answers this question. FYI - Alpine Shire is 300km north of Melbourne with main towns of Bright, Myrtleford and Mount Beauty but almost 92% of that land is public land, including parts of the Alpine National Park and all of Mount Buffalo National Park.

16.01.2022 Some HUGE wins for animals in this budget! Just listen to how excited Andy is to announce them. Well done to all the members and supporters of the Animal Justice Party AJP Victoria. Only with your support do we have an advocate for animals in the halls of the Parliament. Thank you

16.01.2022 When these restrictions first came into place, Andy wrote to the government with concern that dog grooming was deemed non-essential. Now that the government has extended restrictions, he has contacted them again to say dog grooming must be reclassified for welfare. This new length of time will be far too long for many animals. With more Victorians taking on a companion animal than ever before, it is vital that the government ensures they can safely get the care they deserve.... If a few more weeks in stage 4 is necessary to stop the spread of coronavirus - then thats what needs to be done. Just because Andy supported the governments plan in principle, doesnt mean there arent areas that need tweaking. Please remember that, despite the current restrictions, you can take an animal to the vet if there is a genuine animal welfare issue. For more detail please check the DHHS website - https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/stage-4-restrictions-summary-co

15.01.2022 Let's start the day with a feel-good post and heap praise on 11yo Billie Rea Gilbert from Tassie for her passion for helping wildlife. "She's quite often coming home with orphaned pademelons, Bennett's and rufous hare-wallabies, and she knows how to feed them, toilet them," her mum said. "Nothing that she does with animals surprises me anymore. I'm just really impressed." The future is in good hands with kids like Billie Rea having a passion for saving animals. A future AJP representative??

15.01.2022 If you have a spare 20 mins, please watch Andy Meddick MP discuss immediate reuniting of companion animals and the issues surrounding the current law with Dr Kelly Halls, principal veterinarian of Bentons Road Vet Clinic.

15.01.2022 Frank Wong from the CSIRO said intensive chicken farms provided viruses like avian influenza with a high population of new hosts. "There is a chance that the virus, if it mutates to a high pathogenic form, it becomes a serious disease and then it becomes very contagious," he said.

15.01.2022 "A live export ship carrying 5,800 head of cattle and 43 crew members, including two Australians, is missing in waters off south-western Japan. Authorities last night found one lifeboat and a Filipino crew member wearing a life vest drifting in the waters. The coast guard said his condition is not life threatening. Officials have yet to locate the ship but the search is continuing."

14.01.2022 To prevent another pandemic, we need to treat animals better. From the cultivation to the spread of zoonotic diseases, the animal industry has a long history of creating and spreading diseases, which has been disastrous for public health. From the dawn of these diseases in animal husbandry to the many countless hotspots across Australia and the world, industries that are built on the exploitation of animals are threatening our wellbeing and it has always devastated the wellbeing of animals. In order to defend against these dire global issues, we need to start adopting policies that will shape the future that we want to see. The Animal Justice Party is the only political party in Australia with extensive policy tackling these issues with a focus on reforming our treatment of animals

13.01.2022 Hi everyone, I would like to introduce myself to you. My name is Rochelle Van Heerden and I will be running as a Candidate in Taylor Ward for Knox City Council.... As a new and returning resident of Knox City, I bring a fresh perspective and an openness that sets me aside from others. With a background in public health, employment and community services, I am able and willing to serve the community as a steadfast leader who thinks laterally and takes action. I have a deep awareness of significant global issues and recognise how they affect our local community. I aim to represent these issues with solid intention and impact, whilst embracing integrity and transparency. I have a connection to animals and nature. My love for the outdoors has led me to be a forward thinker and will allow me to focus on projects such as the preservation and well-being of local green spaces. I want all members of the community that are animals and people, to enjoy the experience of a healthy environment. As someone with a background in psychology and project management, I embrace rational and balanced collaboration. My commitment to the Knox community is that my words and actions will always be informed by thoughtful research along with public, professional and academic opinions. I have been involved in a diverse range of projects involving animal welfare, climate change, and human rights. These issues are all strongly connected to catastrophic events like COVID-19 and the bushfires. The devastating impact these incidents have on the community has encouraged me to become an advocate for animal and human life, and the environment we all inhabit together. I focus on sustainable and strategic solutions that aim to positively impact the community. I want to work together for the animals and people of Knox to build a safe and healthy environment and thus, leading to a kind and sustainable community for us all. If this resonates with you and you would like to get to know me more as an advocate for animals, the environment and community, please join me online. I look forward to connecting with you all.

11.01.2022 Wow, The Nationals in NSW are really showing their true colours. No concern for protecting wildlife or habitat at all. Theyre concerned it will limit land use on farms and the ability to rezone areas for development. Under the new policy, more trees are classed as koala habitat which will restrict the clearing of land.

11.01.2022 REMINDER! Submissions to the Extinction Inquiry close tonight!

11.01.2022 While the government should be commended for their support in the recent budget on some animal welfare issues, there are others in urgent need of addressing. That's why Andy Meddick MP read in a motion called for the 2021 duck shooting season to be cancelled. We will never stop fighting until we achieve a ban on this brutal 'sport'. Our fight for animals doesn't stop at ducks. The wholesale massacre of kangaroos in Victoria continues, as it does for other wildlife species who... can simply be killed under a DEWLP 'Authority to Control Wildlife.' Farmed animals in intensive factory farms are subject to unimaginable conditions. And, non-lethal methods of population control must be investigated, trialled and deployed for introduced species such as brumbies, rabbits, deer, pigs, foxes, cats and dogs. Shooting or poisoning them is simply cruel and doesn't pose a long term solution. There are so many battles for animals that we're facing so we need you to join the team. Do you have time to lead or help a campaign? Join and/or Volunteer today! + https://www.ajpvic.org.au/join + https://www.ajpvic.org.au/volunteer

11.01.2022 After Victoria's most animal-friendly budget we'll pay this photobomb, Dan Andrews. Now, if you could just go ahead and BAN DUCK SHOOTING that would be great, thanks.

11.01.2022 "Dash was killed because he was too anxious." Beautiful greyhound Dash experienced five years of exploitation by the racing industry. After being surrendered to a large animal shelter, a Melbourne couple fostered Dash for six weeks and reported an improvement in his anxiety-related behaviours. When Dashs carers were requested to return him to the shelter, they were assured he would find a loving home. A few weeks later, they received an email stating a behaviourist was worki...ng with Dash and he was doing well!. However, Dash had already been killed. Moreover, shelter management confirmed that a behaviourist never met or worked with Dash, his anxiety was not treated with medication, despite an onsite vet clinic, and no rescue organisation was contacted to assist with his care. Claire who had fostered Dash and found out about his killing started Stop convenience killing of Victorian shelter animals and lodged a Parliamentary Petition to make it illegal for Victorian pounds and shelters to kill an animal where a rescue group will take on its care. Andy Meddick MP speaks on the largest e-petition ever to be tabled in Victorian Parliament and why we require reforms for pounds and shelters in Victoria.

11.01.2022 "The Victorian Parliament will be one of the first in the country to consider whether animals should be recognised as victims of family violence, when Animal Justice Party Leader Andy Meddick puts forward the motion this week. "Recognising animal abuse as a form of family violence moves it into that area of law to be able to make changes that are essential and life-saving," Mr Meddick said. Abusers often use pets to manipulate and control their victims, but very few women's r...efuges allow animals. The motion includes changes to pet ownership laws and a commitment from the state government to provide more support for places for women, their children and their pets."

10.01.2022 For those that missed it, August 29th was the World Day for the End of Speciesism (WoDES) From the Animal Justice Party Charter: "Our treatment of animals and the environments we share with them are often marred by a lack of understanding, leading to disrespect and cruelty. At a time when the planets environment is being challenged on so many fronts, we must urgently act to ensure that all animals that both contribute to and depend on it are respected and valued for their in...trinsic and fundamental roles. We reject anthropocentrism and speciesism among other forms of oppression and violence. We need to build a new relationship with the planet that is inclusive of all of its inhabitants. With a fresh approach towards animals and the ecological systems of Earth, humans can create more rewarding and ethical communities and relationships built on deeper understandings and firm principles of justice. Our species must become a caring and responsible member of the wider Earth community." For more information on WoDES go to: www.end-of-speciesism.org/en/

10.01.2022 Mosswood Wildlife stood up and saved dozens of koalas during the Portland koala massacre. Now, they will have their own mobile unit. It will double as a rescue and education vehicle.

09.01.2022 "Animal Justice Party MP Andy Meddick said it was time for Victoria to follow other states including Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory and ban recreational duck shooting. Mr Meddick said shooting ducks was morally unacceptable, and the majority of Victorians want to see it banned. Studies and surveys show that native duck numbers are consistently declining as a direct result of the climate emergency and drought, Mr Meddick said. We should be looking at a complete legislative ban forever just like many other states." Send a message to your MPs that it is time to Ban Duck Shooting in Victoria - https://animaljusticepartyvictoria.good.do/banduckshooti//

09.01.2022 Good but its the minimum sentence he should receive. Until jail is on the table the racing industry will continue to offload horses and plead ignorance when they are killed.

08.01.2022 RIP Gatting - Racing and dying for greed, not animal welfare, on Saturday 12th September. "Humanly euthanised" (read as killed) as a result of an injury sustained during the running of the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington Racecourse.

07.01.2022 "Rather than only pointing the finger at Denmark, we should look at what’s happening in our own backyard, said Bruce Poon, national president of the Animal Justice Party. We do have a lot of animal agriculture in Australia and we have similar problems with zoonotic disease outbreaks like that in Victoria, he said."

07.01.2022 ++ UPDATE ON PET GROOMING SERVICES ++ Andy has been able to secure clarification that mobile pet grooming services are classified for Regional Victoria as a business that can get their COVID-Safe Plan in order and get back to work! This follows being inundated with queries from people being told they couldnt when the recent roadmap was released. Andy is now fighting for reclassification for pet grooming as vital for animal welfare in Metropolitan Melbourne. Andy also did no...t miss the opportunity to highlight the double standards of the Government by allowing the racing industry to continue all this time on animal welfare grounds. "The Animal Justice Party says it will keep fighting the Victorian government over the classification of pet grooming under the COVID-19 roadmap. Andy Meddick MP said it needed urgent attention, saying it was vital for animal welfare. Ill continue to fight the government on this one, he said. He says hes already had a breakthrough, in regards to regional Victoria."

Follow her page for more information about her campaign to raise awareness of local animal issues and to win a seat on Yarra Council. What a great pic!

05.01.2022 Please read Andys statement in its entirety regarding his position on the legislation debated today in Parliament. Working to give proposed legislation this level of consideration, and then giving honest explanation to their constituents, should be the standard we expect of our elected representatives. If your other MPs arent detailing their decision-making as thoroughly then demand why or vote them out.

05.01.2022 Andy Meddick MP just tabled the largest e-petition in the history of the Victorian Parliament - calling on the government to end pound convenience killing, and to allow rescue groups to save more animals. YOU made this happen. Give yourself a pat on the back! And it is only just the beginning. Tomorrow Andy will make a speech on why this reform is so important. Then next month, hell bring pound and shelter reform as a topic for debate in the chamber, requiring the government to respond.

04.01.2022 Chris Miles is exactly what the world needs more of... a salt of the earth bloke who is not afraid to stick his neck out for animals, for nature and for other people. Real men dont race, shoot or eat animals. What they do instead is work hard and in their spare time they try to make the world a better place. Please support Chris to raise awareness of animal issues at the local government level and to win a seat on the Moreland Council. ... Donate to help his campaign here: https://www.ajpvic.org.au/chris_miles_moreland_2020

04.01.2022 Animal Justice Party MP Andy Meddick said duck shooting involved "extraordinary animal cruelty" - "We're not talking about a single rifle here which fires a single bullet, which would require an extraordinary marksmanship to begin with to take a headshot on a moving bird at dawn or dusk, which is essentially in the dark when all you've got to identify it is a shadow. We're talking about shotguns where pellets fly through the air and all sorts of other animals and birds are wounded and die, including protected species like swans." A GMA report about hunters' knowledge, released last year, revealed that only 20 per cent of duck and quail shooters understood how to correctly identify game species, while only 13 per cent knew how to dispatch a downed bird. Dan Andrews, it's time to Ban Duck Shooting in Victoria!

03.01.2022 Tomorrow is budget day. Let's see if the Govt stands by it's commitment to improving animal welfare and includes Andy Meddick MPs bids to make it the most animal-friendly budget in Victoria's history!

03.01.2022 Kinley Kangaroos Update - A non-lethal translocation and rehoming plan has been forwarded to the conservation regulator, the environment minister and the premiers office.

01.01.2022 URGENT - ANIMAL WELFARE REFORM FOR VICTORIA https://engage.vic.gov.au/new-animal-welfare-act-victoria "The Victorian Government is seeking feedback on proposals for a new Animal Welfare Act. The new Act would replace the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 (POCTA Act). The POCTA Act is currently the main piece of animal welfare legislation in Victoria. While the POCTA Act has supported Victoria’s reputation for a high standard of animal welfare for more than 30 years, t...he legislation is outdated and has become complex. Some parts do not work in practice as well as they could." The current law that aims to protect animals from cruelty, POCTA, fails to adequately protect animals which became clear during the recent Inquiry into Animal Activism. The purpose of this government consultation is to reform the animal welfare law in Victoria, by replacing the current POCTA Act with a revised and improved legislative framework. We have provided some guidelines and additional material to assist you in completing the online survey and you can write your own submission. https://www.ajpvic.org.au/animal_welfare_reform_submission_ https://engage.vic.gov.au/new-animal-welfare-act-victoria We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change the law for non-human animals. ~ Dr Tamasin Ramsay *THE CLOSING DATE FOR THIS IS MIDNIGHT 14TH DECEMBER 2020

01.01.2022 A motion for a Green New Deal was supported by Andy Meddick MP. He had to stress though that if nothing is done to assist farmers to transition to sustainable, plant-based harvests, both here and around the world, it is hard to see how any new deal can be made green. We need to give our farmers all the support they need to make that transition.

01.01.2022 Great news for wildlife rescuers and carers! They're heroes and they deserve support. "Wildwood provides a safe place for injured joeys and wallabies to recover under Ms Turner’s care. With little funding previously available, Ms Turner has done what she could to set up an enclosure which housed the animals in their natural habitat before fully releasing them back into the wild.... While Ms Turner was pleased with what she had been able to do previously, the new grant would allow her to rehabilitate fully grown kangaroos."
