17.01.2022 Autism Insights: Hyperacusis Hyperacusis causes sounds to sound unbearably loud that seem normal to most people. Research shows as many as 69% of Autistics ...have hyperacusis. Other causes include Bell’s palsy, chronic fatigue, Lyme disease, Meniere’s, PTSD & depression. Hyperacusis can make everyday sounds such as car engines, dishes clanking, paper rustling, & conversations uncomfortable enough to avoid such situations. Hyperacusis can occur with normal hearing, in one or both ears, with/without tinnitus. It occurs in 1/50,000 in the general population & 1 in 1,000 of those with tinnitus. In cases of brain or ear trauma, hyperacusis may improve with time, while in cases where the cause is not clear, relief may not come on its own. Ironically, wearing ear plugs/headphones & avoiding sounds can exacerbate hyperacusis & further poor tolerance to relatively soft sounds. 16.01.2022 Yey! Our very first Zoom Art Therapy class for 8-13 year old autistic folk with the awesome Karma Barnes from Art Therapy Northern Rivers. MY STRENGTH IS... WEE...K 1 We begin our Art Therapy creative journey and will create an expressive artwork using Pastels. WEEK 2 We will continue on our Art Therapy creative journey and create personal collages WEEK 3 We will deep dive into the expressive world of watercolours WEEK 4 We will bring form to our feelings using air drying clay and nature objects WEEK 5 We will celebrate our Art Therapy journey and creativity using acrylic paints on canvas boards. Karma Barnes is Autism Camp Byron Bay’s resident art therapist. Karma has a passion for sharing creativity & the power of art. Karma is the director of the environmental arts project Imagine the Land & the Youth Street Art Project. She has worked with over 10,000 people on her large-scale art installation & street art projects throughout Australia, New Zealand, India and Italy. Karma invites young people on a fun creative journey of exploring art-making to express their impressions of the world through art; igniting the imagination and bringing form to creative voices through various and exciting art materials. The multi-sensory nature of art materials and the relational aspect of art making lends itself to the challenges inherent in autism while enhancing psycho-emotional well-being. Using the materials of the visual arts - pastels, collage, watercolour, clay & paint you will create artworks to represent your emotions and celebrate your strengths, foster self-awareness and explore new ways of being. The cost of the five sessions will be $375. Creative Kids Vouchers (part-payment NSW only) & self/plan managed NDIS funding are accepted. A materials art pack will be posted out to participants in advance of the course. There are only eight places on this first course so better be quick! To register go to autismcampaustralia.org/art

12.01.2022 One of the things I love the most about you (especially those of you in the B=B or Brain Care Cafe communities) is that you genuinely, safely, thoughtfully and... willingly be here in a manner that allows me to share my truths. And in a way that allows you to share your truths. And then to be seen, heard, validated and cyber hugged. I can’t tell you how important this has been for my own healing. My autism diagnosis (recognition or identification are also great words to substitute with diagnosis) did not come until I was 36. That means 36 years of feeling UNseen, UNheard, confused, invalidated, like there was something wrong with me. And what I now know is trauma, I used to think of as shame and guilt. Being able to speak openly and honestly here (which is the easiest place for me to open up, because, well, no eye contact and no energy transference!) has literally changed my life. And from witnessing the ways those of you in my private communities share, support and see each other I know that healing is happening for you too. What a bloody amazing bunch you are. It makes me happy that the people who have found me, and that I attract to my page, are so inherently giving of themselves in the way they engage and support. Thankyou for being the strangers I’ve needed to make change in the world! Xxx See more

12.01.2022 Below is some advice from an autistic mother navigating the dynamics change in ‘mother - teen’ relationships. Of course this may apply to all parents navigatin...g the shift in dynamics when a child enters teen years, but for autistic parents, this may feel more intense or confusing to navigate due to many factors. To autistic mothers of teenagers: It’s common for children to begin to pull away from you as they enter their teens. It’s hard not to take it personally, but they are just asserting their independence. I know this change in dynamics might be hard for you. It may feel like rejection, but I promise you it’s not. It might bring up past traumas, where you felt alienated or ignored. This is different. They will always love you. We love supporting our autistic members throughout every stage of their life cycle. We have found little to no content available to support autistic mothers through their parenting journey. We would love to hear from autistic mothers, who can share their experiences and advice.
