25.01.2022 Dear Koala supporters! As you retrieve leaves for Koala feed please be mindful of the efforts and investments made that go towards establishing young trees in our urban environments. Pulling leaves and branches off tree stock can have a negative impact on such trees and without successful tree planting, we will face continued challenges of developing a healthy urban forest to adapt to climate change. To acquire Koala feed appropriately, please contact your local Council
25.01.2022 Chunky having a munch of his favourite natives! We try to keep the diets of our patients as close to their natural feeding habits as possible while they are in care. If you have any native gums or wattle feel free to drop them in! Our birds and possums will thanks you for it!
25.01.2022 Bidding closes Thursday!
25.01.2022 Please help if you can. Even just a "like" or a "share" helps. https://www.facebook.com/donate/1715322468653671/ Female koala Cherry has been pulled from the fire grounds this morning and is in a bad way. She’s been assessed and is currently being cared for in ICU on fluids and oxygen. Whilst her burns don’t seem to be too bad at this stage, she is suffering from significant smoke inhalation. We need your help! We can only anticipate the next few days are going to be criti...cal and significantly demanding on our resources. Please consider donating if you can. We are also in need of eucalyptus leaf, native flowers , fresh fruit and veg and of course all the thoughts, prayers and positive vibes we can get. Our deepest gratitude and admiration goes out the CFS, MFS, SES, DEW and wildlife rescuers during this heartbreaking time. As you can imagine our volunteers and team are working very hard at this time so please be patient if you are trying to contact the hospital. If we can keep our phone lines free for animal emergencies, that would be great and we will endeavor to keep everyone update best we can. Stay safe everyone - we are here to help. See more

20.01.2022 This cutie was brought in to the hospital after being found sitting in the middle of the road. After performing and examining the Xrays we were able to diagnose Ted with a little fracture to the radius. With some bandaging to stabilise we will repeat the xrays in a few weeks
19.01.2022 Some amazing businesses coming together to help! Make sure you put Friday March 6th into the calendar and show your support
19.01.2022 Cinders the koala presented to the Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Hospital with an abnormal large swelling on her left cheek. Closer examination and xrays revealed an unusual fluid filled pocket under the skin. The fluid was aspirated and samples were sent to the lab for testing. Results identified the particular type of bacteria present and the veterinary team developed an intense treatment and medication plan. Unfortunately she didn't respond to the regime as well as we hoped so surgery was then performed to remove the capsule from inside the cheek tissue. Cinders was looked after by her wonderful licensed carer and had regular check ups at the hospital throughout the process. Today, it was with the greatest pleasure to see her released back into the wild where she belongs. (Checkout the comments for the video of her release!)
19.01.2022 Did you know!!! The Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Hospital on Anzac Highway is staffed by volunteers and 100% funded by donations. They treat injured, sick and orph...aned animals every day of the year... with their 100% focus releasing them back into the wild. At the moment they are treating animals affected by bushfire, heat, dog attacks, hit by cars and many other health issues. A lot of people dont know you can just drop in and give a donation and theyve even got a little gift shop with all funds going to keeping this place running. Massive props to Tash and the team for all the amazing work they do!!! Awesome!!!!
19.01.2022 Koalas make the New York Times! An article on chlamydia research featuring Professor Peter Timms work at USC, How Koalas with an S.T.D. Could Help Humanity: was featured in the New York Times recently. This is vital research Adelaide Koala and Wildlife Hospital is very proud to have been a part of. https://www.nytimes.com//sc/chlamydia-koalas-vaccines.html Peter has spent the past decade developing a chlamydia vaccine for koalas, and is now conducting trials on wild ko...alas, in the hopes that his formula will soon be ready for wider release; We can do something in koalas you could never do in humans,. You can read more about Peters' work here: https://www.usc.edu.au//giving-oppo/koala-research-project
17.01.2022 Some fun facts from last financial year! As patient numbers and costs continue to rise, please consider donating online at http://www.akawhospital.org.au/make-a-donation.html
17.01.2022 We are now at full capacity and are unable to accept any more donations of items at this time. A big thankyou to all of our amazing supporters that have donated items to our hospital! We are completely blown away by the generosity of those that have taken the time to come in and drop off their donations over the last week!... We are asking those that would like to help to donate to our fundraising page if able to or to share our page and help raise funds to financially support the hospital. Otherwise if you would like to hold on to your donations they can be dropped off in several weeks once we have been able to make more room http://www.akawhospital.org.au/make-a-donation.html
17.01.2022 These two cuties came In during the week for their checkup! They are ringtail possums that have been handraised by a specialised carer since becoming orphaned. Here at the hospital we see all native Australian wildlife How can you not love these faces!
17.01.2022 Wow Adelaide you are amazing!! We have received such an amazing response! At this stage we are only taking donations of what is on the list and we are already almost full!... We are asking that everyone doesn't message our page as there are currently over 100 messages as we cannot get back to them all. Please also restrict the page and phone lines for wildlife emergencies. Let's share the love with all the wildlife rescues!
16.01.2022 Feel Good Friday!! "Fuzzy" the Boobook owl arrived at the Hospital back in June unable to fly. Xrays revealed he had a broken clavicle and our wonderful team began the long and challenging task of trying to support him to heal. It took nearly two months but with strapping, medications and close monitoring, Fuzzy made a full recovery! Our amazing volunteers supported him to regain his strength and he was released back in to the wild again this week. Such an amazing bird and awesome outcome!
15.01.2022 Be sure to check out the amazing range of products at Earth Greetings! These guys have been long term supporters of our hospital and patients and we are very grateful for their generosity. A great team of people with great products!
12.01.2022 This week we were privileged to have a visit from Australias former prime minister, the Honourable Julia Gillard AC, Julia Gillard, and her guest, Sheel Tyle, @sheeltyle, Founder and CEO of Amplo, a global venture capital firm helping build companies that matter. Our guests met Fluffy George, a koala victim of the Cudlee Creek bushfires. Fluffy George sustained burns to all four of his paws; you can see one of them in a red bandage poking out from the towel in this photo! Our wonderful medical team has been working hard every day to ensure Fluffy Georges wounds are carefully treated and that he is kept as comfortable as possible while he heals. Our volunteers keep his enclosure clean and well stocked with thick branches and plenty of eucalyptus leaves so that it feels as much like home as possible for our beautiful, furry friend.
11.01.2022 Gorgeous Wilbur came in to be castrated today. Since he was orphaned he has been in care with a specialised Joey carer getting all the tlc he needs! He is almost ready to move to a big sanctuary where he will be with other kangaroos, but first he needs to be desexed! His surgery went very well and he was a star patient! Unfortunately the dirty looks he gave us on his way out give us the idea he didn't appreciate the work we did today!
11.01.2022 Ollie the koala came in for a health check and testing before his release. Unfortunately he was orphaned as a baby but did so well being had raised by a special carer. This little guy passed with flying colours and will be released bacin into the wild in the coming months!
10.01.2022 We need your help! Last week was a busy week at The Adelaide Koala and Wildlife Hospital. We had 9 koalas admitted for various reasons such as being hit by a car, dog attacks and suffering from chlamydia. One of the hardest cases was sweet Madeline and her baby who were run over by a car with mum suffering a severe break to her right arm as well as cuts and bruising. We were so fortunate to have Marion Animal Hospital donate their surgeon and facilities to surgically repair ...Madeline’s arm. The surgeon used special SOP plates and screws to fix the bones in place. We now face the long road of recovery helping Madeline to heal with antibiotics, pain management, wound care, physio, follow up xrays and one on one support. Her care will cost thousands of dollars and well worth every cent to get this mum and baby back into the wild where they belong. Please consider making a tax deductible donation to help us provide and care for Madeline. Every little bit really helps make a difference.
10.01.2022 The beautiful Paige and her baby Pip came in for a check up and xrays recently. It took some creativity for our medical team to perform the examination and collect a blood sample without disrupting little Pip but we were up to the task!
09.01.2022 Thank you so much to everyone who has generously given of their time, money and goods to support us in our work. We have been overwhelmed by the kindness of people from near and far. From the bottom of our hearts we are incredibly grateful. A special thanks to the gorgeous little people who left these delightful letters and cookies for us. You have warmed our hearts and our tummies. xx
08.01.2022 Lest We Forget Beautiful Sammy is proud to show the special poppy on his cast in support of our fallen soldiers and all the other animals that we have lost.
08.01.2022 Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out to offer support for our native wildlife following the devastating heat and bushfires of the past few days. It has been a difficult time for our fauna and we thank every person who has made an effort to provide water or shelter for an animal in need. To be able to provide medical treatment and ongoing medical support for the wildlife in need we require help from our generous supporters. At the hospital we have been super bus...y treating multiple casualties of the fires; it has been heartbreaking to see some of the terrible injuries that have occurred but it has also been wonderful to have the privilege of assisting some of the animals on their way back to good health. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the devastating bushfires of the past few days. You are in our thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time. We are an organisation that relies upon the generous donations of the public. If you would like to donate towards the cost of medical treatment please donate on the link below
07.01.2022 These 3 fluffballs visited the hospital this week for a health check and ear tag before they are released back into the wild. Ear tags each have a unique number which are assigned to the individual koala, this way if they are rescued or taken to a vet hospital we can track their history. Female koalas have the tag in the right ear where boys have the left ear tagged.
07.01.2022 Wishing our wonderful supporters and wildlife partners a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year! We also want to extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation to the most amazing team of volunteers - without them, none of our work would be possible. Thank you to these inspiring people for another year of your dedicated hard work! ** AKAWH will be closed from 19th December and reopening Monday 4th January 2020. For wildlife assistance during this time, please contact Fauna Rescue SA on 82890896 or your local vet. **

05.01.2022 The beautiful Cuddles came in from the Cuddlee Creek fireground after she sustained burns to all 4 paws. Luckily she is doing well and came in for her check up today. She has gone back to her carer and we will continue to treat her as an outpatient
05.01.2022 What a privilege it was to have Senator Marielle Smith visit the hospital recently. The senator arrived with a delicious lunch, prepared especially for our very hard working volunteers; it was greatly appreciated by some hot and tired workers! Ms Smith was introduced to some of our patients and had a quick cuddle with a joey koala while he was waiting to be assessed by our veterinary nurse, Natasha May. Thank you, Senator, for caring about our wildlife and for showing interest in what we do.

01.01.2022 Check out this video of a koala patient undergoing an ultra sound of the bladder and kidneys. Ultrasound is a great tool that we use to assist with making a diagnosis. In this case, we were looking for any changes, thickenings, sediments or abnormalities to these organs.
01.01.2022 We were able to spot this tiny brushtail baby in the pouch while providing a health check to mumma possum this week. What a special moment!
