25.01.2022 IF MY KIDS WERE TO DESCRIBE ME // I imagine it'd be a whole lot of "drinks coffee, talks to her crystals, plants & herbs, is on Zoom a lot" and "lives in her active wear a whole lot from Sunday - Thursday." But you know what? I'm okay with that picture. Because how odd I am or what I wear isn't a reflection of the results I help my clients get. Results like this:... 1 week: 5kg & 5cm from waist. Sleeping a bit better, less snoring. 2 weeks: 3kg & 2cm from waist. Joints not aching so much. 5 weeks: 4kgs & 4cm from waist. Yoga & evening walk easier, not dragging myself through the day. 12 weeks: 16kg & 22cm from waist. My kids can't keep up with me. I wake up & approach the evening rush with energy. 23 weeks: 3kg & 2cm from waist, total 19kg & 24cm; maintained with ease & no deprivation over the holidays. (First time ever that I haven't put on weight over the holidays!) Or Claire who shed 11kg & 14cm from their waist in 11 weeks (including over Christmas!). Want some of these results for yourself? Send me a DM and let's chat sweatpants on and all. Metabolic Balance Australia and New Zealand

25.01.2022 Nothing like getting some love from your client on a Monday morning "Sarah is kind, a caring loving naturopath, she treats you as whole, she is supportive to your needs, whether its nutritional guidance, or even mental emotional guidance. I've been seeing Sarah since June 2019, and i wasn't in a good place then, I'm still seeing Sarah and she is still guiding me, as my situation was complex at the time, and Sarah has made a huge impact into my healing. I now have energy t...hat i didn't have before, and I eat a range of foods that I wasn't before, and she is helping me with my emotional and mental needs. I can't thank her enough for what she has done for me. I highly recommend Sarah. " Thanks to my lovely client who brightened my day.

24.01.2022 Who’s snuggling up on the couch for some quality scroll time? who’s mastered scrolling and watching TV at the same time?! Did you check out my latest blog about how to clean up your evenings (and days!) to help you GTFTS during periods-menopause? (that’s go the f*^* to sleep) No, well the link is here: https://akesohealthcare.com.au/blog ... Don’t worry, it’s not scary, but some small tweaks can make a big difference to the quantity and quality of sleep you get. Or, the difference between feeling like a or or each morning. Sleep is so important to your mental, emotional and physical health. It’s where so much magic happens for your body. Sleep is so important that my program ‘The Chaos to Calm Method’ has in-depth education and action items to help you understand the impact of poor sleep on your mood and concentration, why insomnia is a common problem for women in their 40s and how to overcome it. Getting good quality sleep can help you say goodbye to the feelings of overwhelm, rage, and anxiety that you can’t control, so you can be calm, patient and tolerant with your family, workmates and friends. If you’d like to know more about how the Chaos to Calm Method may help you master changing hormones and chaotic moods, please send me a message and let’s chat.

24.01.2022 REMEMBER LOTS // I talked about how lower oestrogen in perimenopause contributes to forgetfulness, misplacing objects and so on. Kind of like baby brain re-visited. (Like the first times werent enough?!) Exercise, rest, stress management, sleep, and proper supplementation are all extremely important for a healthy brain. And of course consuming BRAIN-BOOSTING foods regularly to keep you sharp, energized, and focused. Which of these anti-inflammatory brain-boosting foods cant you live without? 24.01.2022 THAT FEELING WHEN YOU FIT INTO CLOTHES YOU HAVEN'T WORN FOR YEARS // Yeah, you know that excitement. (And also, the validation that keeping it was the right decision!) This was me this morning when I slipped on a much loved top to wear to pilates. (Thanks Danni at OnCore Pilates Studio for the stretch & challenging workout!) I can't even remember the last time I wore this top, probably 5 years ago, maybe more. (Let's not talk about why it was still in the drawer, okay?!) ...What item of clothing would you like to fit in to again? This is also what I look like every time I see a new discovery call booking come through, I feel so excited that another woman has decided ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, I am not old, and even if I am, I don't need to feel crappy! 24.01.2022 GUT HEALTH IN A NUTSHELL // I talked in my last video about what happens to your gut and digestion as you age. It doesn't have to be all bad. You don't need to accept bloating, wind, nausea, abdominal pain or cramps, diarrhoea or constipation as part of life. These things might be common, but that doesn't make them normal.... Swipe to see the simple things you can implement to help improve your gut and digestive health as you age. One really simple thing you can do is to give your gut and digestion a break by avoiding snacks and leaving at least a few hours between meals. If you'd like to know more about supporting your gut health, visit my blog and gut health archives: https://www.akesohealthcare.com.au/category/gut-health/

23.01.2022 It's been a while since I explained how I came upon the name Akeso Health. So I thought that showing you my new/revamped/jazzed up logo was as good a time as any! AKESO was the Greek Goddess of healing. Her sisters were Hygeia (hygeine) and Panacea (a cure/pill for every ill). Unlike her sister Panacea, Akeso represents the process of healing. When I was thinking about a name for my Naturopathy practice, I wanted to choose something that reflected how I feel about my role in ...health and well-being. I passionately believe that healing is a process, and this differs for each and every one of us. We are all unique, with differing needs, desires, skills, capacity and goals. Naturopathy recognises the body as an integrated whole, with an inherent, innate ability to heal. We dig deep and find the root cause of the messages (symptoms) your body is giving. Sometimes there is a need for nutritional, herbal, energetic and lifestyle supports, to help your body to heal and find balance again. I like to see myself as a coach, walking beside you on your journey, helping you understand what's going on, and encouraging you to stretch and grow when things feel hard or tough. I'm there, empowering you with an understanding of your body, how it works, and the changes you need to make to propel you to wellness. Empowering wellness. I always have faith in you and your body. When we're getting to the root cause and understanding what's led to your current state of health, healing really is a process. It's my job to make that as efficient, effective and EASY for you.

22.01.2022 CATCH 22 // You know that when you sleep well you feel well... but when you're stressed, busy, anxious, worried or overwhelmed, it can feel impossible to sleep well. You know what it's like, you wake bolt upright too early in the morning and then can't go back to sleep. Or you feel like you just dozed all night and haven't been asleep at all. ... Or maybe you wake up at the same time each night and take ages to go back to sleep. Sleep is fundamental for your energy levels, brain function, mental health and your overall physical health and capacity to cope with all that life throws at you. When you don't get enough good quality sleep you're crankier than a bear with a sore head. This week in 'Chat With A Nat' I discussed sleep, stress and cortisol. AKA why you wake up a lot overnight, feel like you've dozed off/on, and aren't refreshed in the morning. If you'd like to watch the video and understand WHY that happens, and some simple things you can do to help stop it from happening, then go join the group! https://facebook.com/groups/thechaostocalmcommunity I'll see you there for more discussions on enjoying life in your 40s, peri-menopause and beyond.

21.01.2022 2020 sure did keep us on our toes. Just when you thought things couldn't get more crazy... they did! Now I don't know about you, but through all this craziness I sure had some dark moments. I thought things were so sh*t there's no way they'd be able to get back to anything close to normal. I also wasn't sure I wanted things to go back to normal! I was driving the kids around to all their activities, for at least 10+ hours/week I was driving. Which gave us lots of time togethe...r but not really time to connect with them, and certainly no time with my husband - we were like ships passing in the night most of the time. I was working too much, but not paying myself, feeling resentful about that, and wondering if this really was my life's purpose? Was this what I was put on earth for? My health was still crappy, despite trying lots of things. My life wasn't healthy, how could my body be healthy?! And then I trusted my gut and made two leaps. One to work with a mentor, Hayley Stathis and the other to up skill to become a Metabolic Balance Australia and New Zealand coach. I figured that even if I did nothing else but Metabolic Balance myself, I'd be winning. Hooray for actually listening to intuition! And so what I am proud of from 2020 is rebooting and transforming my health, home life, relationships and business. What I'm leaving behind in 2020 is that stupid crazy busyness that I was stuck in, which meant that I could not prioritise myself, my happiness or my health. What are you proud of from 2020? It could be big, small or somewhere in between. Perhaps it's just getting through this sh*t show - which is actually a HUGE thing.

21.01.2022 IT REALLY IS THAT GOOD // Just in case you didn't know that Turmeric really is the greatest thing since sliced bread, I'm popping in this afternoon to tell you another reason why it's AWESOME for your health. Keeping with this week's theme about forgetfulness or changes in memory during the transition to menopause; I read a study today about turmeric, memory and cognition. Participants in the study were give 90mg of curcumin (an extract of turmeric) twice daily, for 18 months.... Those taking the curcumin extract had significant improvements in memory and attention, and mild improvement in mood. I can also tell you that turmeric is the bomb for your gut and liver health. Which I hope you know from my posts and blogs in recent weeks, is REALLY IMPORTANT for your hormonal balance, mood and overall health. And let's not forget, it's the schiz for inflammation, oxidation and pain. Now before you race out and grab yourself some supplements, don't forget that food is medicine, and turmeric is pretty easy to incorporate in to your diet. Think turmeric lattes, adding turmeric to your soups and stews, juicing it, to name a few ideas. You may like to try my turmeric and ginger paste recipe on the blog. It makes it easy to add turmeric to your food, or make a warming tea from it. Find it here: https://www.akesohealthcare.com.au/anti-inflammatory-turme/ (Please talk to someone qualified in nutrition or herbal medicine or your pharmacist before starting turmeric supplementation to check their are now contraindications or interactions with medications)

20.01.2022 GET THE GLOW // Did you know that herbs and spices have been revered for their medicinal effects since around 3000BC? I love herbal teas for myself and my clients, because they taste great, while doing great things for your body, mind and soul. And all at a budget price! At the moment I've been guzzling lots of turmeric and ginger tea. These spices have been used traditionally to help reduce inflammation, pain and nausea, and enhance gut and liver health. ... Also featuring heavily in my pot, is a twist on a herbalist's stalwart - yarrow, elder flower, echinacea, and peppermint. This blend is traditionally used to help support the immune system, a healthy fever, and reduce congestion to clear the head. It is so tasty, I drink year round, increasing the cups if I'm feeling a cold coming, or hay fever is making me sneeze. (Anyone else noticed the wattle coming out early?!) Glow means a strong feeling of pleasure or well-being. I've designed a series of herbal teas to help you get that Glow feeling. If you're a spice lover, then I've got Golden Glow and Ginger Glow just for you. And the sneezey, sniffly crew will love the YEEP or Immune Glow teas. Find my Glow range of herbal teas here: https://www.akesohealthcare.com.au/product-cate/herbal-tea/ See more

20.01.2022 I wonder if they will do dinner and clean up? Who else has Somebody & Nobody to deal with?!

19.01.2022 MORE HIGHS & LOWS THAN A ROLLER COASTER? // Have festivities got you swinging from higher than high to lower than low faster than a hypercoaster? (it's a thing, look it up!) The combo of extra tasks, shopping, events and stressors - like tired, bickering kids (just me?!) or making the budget stretch a little further - changes many things in your body because of a change in your hormone symphony. At the core of that hormonal change is CORTISOL.... It's not all bad, we do really want it around (along with adrenalin) when we need to quickly dodge an out of control tween on their scooter, or avoid an accident on the busy roads. But from an evolutionary perspective, the critter part of our brain that sets off our stress response doesn't recognise the difference between stressors that actually need us to quickly react, to those that need a clone of ourselves. One of the main things cortisol does is increase your blood glucose levels, so your muscles and brain have plenty of energy available to flee the situation. As this rises, you can feel higher than high, but when it crashes down again later on, well, they don't call it hangry for nothing. You might feel exhausted, sweaty and flushed too. Hang on, you thought it was peri-menopause, but maybe...what if it's your body responding to modern stressors and your changing blood glucose levels? I know, you can't always change the stressors. But we can work on your body's stress resilience and reduce it's reactivity. So you know, you just wipe up the spilled wine rather than weeping and raging over it's loss. Here's one thing you can do tomorrow to help stabilise your blood glucose levels and mood across the day: EAT BREAKFAST. And not just any breakfast - a lovely protein and fat-rich breakfast. Something like: Full fat plain yoghurt + low sugar fruit like kiwi or berries with cinnamon. Or some chicken + green veges sauteed in ghee. Porridge lovers might enjoy my GF seedy porridge - fantastic for your hormonal health. What are you going to have for breakfast? I'll be having goat's yoghurt + bluebs + buckets of cinnamon PS find my seedy porridge recipe here: https://akesohealthcare.com.au/seedy-porridge/ PPS If you'd like to know more about how to master chaotic mood swings and changing hormones in your 40s, then hop on over to my free group 'The Chaos to Calm Community' where I do free trainings every Thursday evening. https://facebook.com/groups/thechaostocalmcommunity

19.01.2022 Actual footage of me at the end of this week. TGIF, hey? How are you finding the balancing of home/work/school/everything? What's working for you? What's not working for you? I've reduced expectations of myself and what I can achieve in a day... Let any work stuff go that isn't time pressing (I work for myself, so yes, easier to do this) Made sure the kids and I have had time outside each day - fresh air, sun and movement Hydrated to the max (non-caffeinated!) Eaten nutrient dense, nourishing food (thanks Metabolic Balance plan for triggering that!) Done something fun FOR ME each day - like listening to music, having a dance, go walking on my own, have a bath, read a book, watch a show I enjoy, talk to a friend My clients often get this last one for homework. Too many of them tell me they don't know what to do or what they'd like to do. So I ask them to think back to when they were a kid - what did they like to do for fun then? I know that for people like you who are always in charge, in control and getting the sh*t done - thinking about emotions, fun, joy and yourself is HARD work. (How do I know, because I'm one of those people too!) But you're worth it! Give it a try, what's the worst thing that can happen. Reflecting on this week - what will you take with you, and what will you leave behind?

18.01.2022 MVP in clinic today was the leafy greens. Prescribed all round, for a variety of reasons. So I'd like to thank the leafy greens for always being there for us with fibre, phytochemicals and a nutrient profile that our intestines (gut), microbiome, nervous and immune systems love so much. Best feedback from today was from a client who was sleeping better and feeling less fatigued. So they "didn't feel like crying from exhaustion at the thought of doing the housework" ... I love my job! (A small reminder that next Friday and Saturday are the last for new clients until September, so reach out if you'd like to snaffle that spot for yourself!) Enjoy the rest of the weekend folks, I'm off to binge watch some more of Marcella on Netflix. What are you up to? See more

17.01.2022 Current mood Its a roller coaster of emotions here with the announcement of further restrictions. Just as I was starting to plan the opening of my Naturopathic Dispensary in Upwey. *sigh* It will be a little later than planned I suppose. 16.01.2022 RESET YOUR BODY // With the start of a new week ahead, Sunday is usually a day of resetting and planning for the week ahead. Today was a little different in that I finished off my training with Cherry from @metabolicbalance_anz I'm so excited to be able to add Metabolic Balance to my clinical toolkit to help clients reset their body and boost their health, energy and wellbeing. The personalised Metabolic Balance nutritional plan helps you understand: what foods to eat ... when to eat them how much to eat to optimise your nutrient intake and support your body to reduce inflammation, fatigue, pain, stiffness, excess weight and hormonal imbalances. If you'd like to know more about Metabolic Balance, and take advantage of an introductory offer, please send me a message. Photo by Lin Kiu on Unsplash

15.01.2022 Dont shop when youre hungry. Even the fruit & vege shopping gets out of control when you do. How do I know? Lived experience, as fresh as this afternoon. Had a hard time fitting it in the fridge, but I didnt play hours of Tetris as a teen for nothing. ... I made a giant pot of tomato, lentil & hidden veg soup with some of the beautiful goodies, rest will disappear far too quickly, Im sure. Ive got a stir fry, tacos, bolognaise (or maybe lasagne) on the meal plan this week. Whats on yours? PS if youd like the recipe for tomato & lentil soup, let me know, Ill write it up on the blog this week.

15.01.2022 Why is it that self-care is the first thing to get cut when time pressure sneaks in? You know the drill at this time of year. More activities, events, obligations, shopping, work...the list goes on. Self-care is a must. It's not the thing you do at the end when everyone and every thing else is looked after. It's the FIRST THING you do each and every day.... Because if you're not doing the basics in self-care: nourishing food, 3 meals/day, filtered water, sleep, movement & relaxation time; then Mama, you're at risk of becoming the grinch of this festive season. Let's start the day with nourishing food. Even if the rest of the day doesn't go as planned, then you've done something. Here's 6 of my fave brekky ideas: avocado + sheep's fetta on rye seedy porridge meat or fish + veges leftovers from dinner eggs + kale pesto + veg goat/sheep's yoghurt + berries You can find the recipes for seedy porridge and kale pesto on my website. https://www.akesohealthcare.com.au/seedy-porridge/ There's also a couple of blogs on why eating breakfast is key to your health & energy levels, and some of my fave breakfast ideas. Find them here: https://www.akesohealthcare.com.au/always-tired-at-2pm-how/ Don't forget to drizzle your food with some cold-pressed, organic flaxseed oil for cellular and hormonal health. My current fave breakfast is bluebs & @meredithdairy goats yoghurt, with buckets of cinnamon sprinkled on top & a shot of flaxseed oil on the side. What's yours?

15.01.2022 STAY HYDRATED // Your body needs water (and other non-caffeinated, non-sweetened fluids) to operate optimally. Remember that your body needs water to help remove waste. Waste and toxins may be increased when your sick as the debris from cells is increased. Small levels of dehydration can make a significant impact on your health and energy levels. If nothing else, with less fluid available, you have less blood volume and less oxygen carried around to the cells, which means les...s energy is produced and you and your organs feel tired. Choose water (room temperature or warmer), herbal teas, soups, and broths to boost your fluid intake. Squeezing the juice from a fresh lemon in to your warm water helps boost vitamin C, gives variety of flavour, and also helps boost digestion and liver function. These are helpful when you feel sick and maybe don't feel like eating. If you're not sure what tea to choose, be sure to check out my herbal tea recipe suggestions on my blog, or browse my online store for tea and bone broth paste options. https://akesohealthcare.com.au/shop

15.01.2022 BUT WHAT ABOUT ? // It’s something I get asked A LOT. fair enough, you want to improve your health and body composition but you don’t want to let go of all your faves, right? The goal during @metabolic_balance is to eat what suits your body, but also your life! Treat foods, drinks or meals are definitely part of the plan. They’re important for you to learn more about what your body does/doesn’t like to eat, how you feel when you eat these f...oods and help you continue to release weight and head towards achieving your health goals. With the right planning, prep, and mindful eating, treat meals won’t derail you and definitely add value to your program. This is really relevant as we head in to Christmas and end of year celebrations that involve lots of treat foods and drinks. Part of my role as your coach is to support you to develop a strategy for this time and keep moving forward to your goal. Being healthy and eating healthy doesn’t have to involve dieting, deprivation or missing out. If you’d like to find out more about how you can transform your health with Metabolic Balance, then send me a message and let’s get you sorted with and getting set up with a personalised program, my support and education modules, ready to implement in January.

14.01.2022 OH HI, IT'S ME SARAH & I WANT TO TALK ABOUT HOW I FOUND MY MOJO AGAIN IN RECORD TIME // Now, heads up: my results are fab. Every one of my clients' journey to health is unique, but I want to share with you my timeline of action & results so you can see what's possible for you in the lead up to the holidays. Let's rewind to June 2020. I'd been stressed out, wrung out, feeling overworked & overwhelmed for a long, long time. Sleeping like cr*p, relying on herbs to get me to sl...eep & praying I didn't wake up overnight because then I'd take ages to go back to sleep & feel more rubbish in the morning. I was the HEAVIEST I'd ever been. And remember, I've had 4 kids. I was heavier than I'd been at 40 weeks pregnant. I couldn't believe it. Everything I knew about the body, hormones, energy & fat metabolism wasn't helping me. I couldn't get my hormones to reset, no matter what I did. Bloated. Puffy. Lethargic. Irritated AF. My resting face was "get the heck away from me." My kids were frightened to ask me for anything. I had ZERO motivation, I'd lost my mojo well and truly. And I was going to quit naturopathy. After I saw the HORRIFIC picture my kids had taken when I wasn't aware, I got started with my @metabolic_balance plan on July 28. 1 week: 5kg & 5cm from waist. Sleeping a bit better, less snoring. 2 weeks: 3kg & 2cm from waist. Joints not aching so much. 5 weeks: 4kgs & 4cm from waist. Realised yoga was easier, so was my evening walk. I didn't feel like I was dragging myself through the day anymore. 12 weeks: I've released 16kg & 22cm from my waist. My kids can't keep up with me. I don't need sleepy herbs! I wake up with energy & approach the evening rush with energy too. I'm 46. I used to feel 86 each morning. And for a period of time I thought that must be normal, that's how it feels to be in my 40s. Ummm, nope, it doesn't have to feel like that AT ALL. Inspiring, right? Well if you'd like the same for yourself, I'd love to hear from you. Book a call with me via the link & let's chat soon! https://akesohealthcare.com.au/book-in PS eating for vibrant health doesn't have to mean dieting, deprivation or missing out on Christmas! Imagine what you'll feel like during the holiday season if you get started on reclaiming your mojo now! PPS I've only got capacity for 2 new clients to get going before Christmas.

13.01.2022 It's International Cat Day and I have to say, in our home, our dear cats are bringing much respite from the reality of life that is stage 4 lock down. Swipe left to see my youngest, Maeve, heaping affection on Nini (who spends a lot of time in fight or flight mode ready and alert to avoid some of Maeve's affection ) and Opal. Cats seem to know when you need some comforting. ... Opal has taken to sleeping next to me, so I can put my hand on her and feel her purr overnight. I remember when my now 16yo was a little boy, my previous cat, Daisy, would hear him cry out and she'd go hop in his cot and curl up next to him - he'd go back to sleep. So lovely. There's been a common theme for people I speak to this week - feeling a bit blah, more tired than usual, grief, anger, all sorts of strong emotions. I think this is normal as we adjust to new rules. Like I explained to a client today, your sub-conscious brain is working really hard scanning constantly to make sure you're safe, following or adapting to new rules etc. It's hard work for your brain and can be why you feel like there's not much in the tank for anything else. I'm prescribing lots of bespoke Australian Bush Flower Essence blends and liquid herbal tonics at the moment to help support the nervous system, reduce feelings of stress and worry, and increase stress resilience. If you'd like some extra support during this time of adaptation, please hop over to my website or send me a message to find a time that suits you for an acute consult. 13.01.2022 "Your dreams need a practical plan" ~Yasmin Boland My Sundays are for rest, rejuvenation and planning. Even in lock down. Especially in lock down perhaps. There's still room for dreaming and planning. Today I:... had a sleep in, sorted through the mountain of mess that was the kid's drawing table behind me (hallelujah!), catalogued my liquid herb dispensary in a fancy spreadsheet (Who else loves spreadsheets and organising things?) went through my diary to see what was coming up for the week ahead (not like I'm going far, but so many zooms!) did the meal plan, got myself ready to start my Metabolic Balance plan. (The picture is of me with my certificate after finishing training as a Metabolic Balance coach.) What does getting myself ready to start Metabolic Balance? Well, it means making some vegetable soup, drinking plenty of water, making sure the vegetables and foods I need are in the house, and most importantly making sure I've got not much in the diary for the first few days. Not too hard really. Now I'm off for our movie night. When we can't go out and do fun stuff, it's nice to make some fun at home instead. And it helps give anchors to the week so they don't all feel the same. What do you like to do on Sundays?

11.01.2022 Are you tuned in? Whats your body saying to you? Mines be telling me to stretch some more and eat my greens. ... Thanks The Open Mind Space for the quote inspo. See more

Theres not many adventures we can go out to find here in Victoria during lock down 2.0. But Im looking forward to the burning off ban being lifted tomorrow. We can have a bonfire Always feels so cleansing and healing. And the kids love sausages and jacket potatoes cooked on the fire. What are you doing for fun this weekend?... See more

09.01.2022 ACHOO // Winter time = sniffly noses, colds, flu No one really ever wants to get sick, possibly even less so at the moment. Here's some of my fave home remedies for reducing the time you're sniffing and sneezing. These tips also work for hay fever. We saw so many beautiful wattle flowers out on our way home today. So early! Seems like it might be time to get on to your hay fever regime already folks. I've got YEEP and Immune Glow teas available in my online shop to hel...p sort you out. https://akesohealthcare.com.au/shop Don't forget that gut health is integral for your immune health too - find out how to support your gut on my blog. https://akesohealthcare.com.au/blog-2 Obviously wattle makes me sneeze, so do dust, grasses and pet hair. What makes you sneeze?

09.01.2022 I think Bless the Messy has nailed the theme for 2020. Being flexible and coping with change can feel hard. I get it, I love routine, rhythm and order. Last minute changes feel hard and exhausting. I find it helps to focus on what I CAN control and do, rather than what I can't. ... Here's a simple mindfulness activity that can help you process and move through the feelings that may come up for you at this time. Feel the fear. Acknowledge it. Say it out loud. "I am feeling ..." Be curious. Why are you feeling that way? Explore that. Then breathe it out. Saying "I am feeling ..." rather than "I am ..." helps avoid programming your brain to think of yourself as angry/scared/frustrated. You're naming the emotion rather than yourself. I love the mindfulness meditation app Buddhify to help me understand and release my feelings. There's many different ones to choose from - including a whole section on stress. Do you have any strategies to help process your feelings?

09.01.2022 Here's your reminder to pause for a moment. Check-in with yourself and think, "How am I doing?" What do you need? Is it: A drink of water? Something to eat?... To sit and rest with your feet up for a wee bit? (If you can lie flat on your back for 20 minutes - no phone - that will greatly help support your nervous system and adrenal glands that might be working very hard right now.) A quiet moment with a hot cup of herbal tea? (go for a relaxing blend with things like chamomile, lemon balm, skullcap, withania or holy basil to help with feelings of stress, worry or overwhelm) To move your body? (yoga or a gentle walk are lovely to help gently move the stress hormones from your body.) To connect with a friend? Caring for others starts with caring for yourself. "You can't pour from an empty cup"

09.01.2022 Well, hello there 2021! I've spent the last few days of my holidays decluttering like a boss. So far the kids have remained, though if they stand still long enough, the risk is great that they may get sorted in to the op shop, marketplace/sell or tip piles. Today I lovingly dusted my herb babies updated my herb shopping list. (Did you even know there was such a thing?!)... Along with clearing out the old and making way for the new, I've been planning and dreaming of what 2021 may bring. Now this might be risky, after what 2020 did for plans, but I'm still gonna! Goal setting gives you a purpose, or a reason why you're doing something, which keeps you on track for success. No getting distracted or side-tracked by the butterflies flying by. Having goals, a reason why, or a purpose is INTEGRAL for achieving your dreams. They are the action plan to get you where you want to be. That's why goal setting, finding your reason why, is one of the first parts of my program - The Chaos to Calm Method. Up levelling your mindset, habits, actions and dreams is KEY to long-term, sustained success with your health goals, and any life goals. This week I'm offering members of my free Facebook group - The Chaos to Calm Community - access to the exclusive workbook I share with my Chaos to Calm Method program peeps! If you want the workbook so you can start 2021 like a boss, then make sure you join the group! Find the group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/thechaostocalmcommunity

08.01.2022 5 THINGS THAT WEAKEN YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM // The list might surprise you, with some things that you've maybe never considered the impact of on your immune system. (Although if you're hanging around here, you've probably heard me rant about them before! ) 1. Stimulants 2. Insufficient sleep 3. Food intolerances & sensitivities... 4. Poor gut health 5. Stress Bonus #6 Smoking (or vaping) Find out more about how each one of these weaken your immune system in my latest blog. (And of course, there's tips there for how to support, nourish and boost your immune system) https://www.akesohealthcare.com.au/5-things-that-weaken-yo/

08.01.2022 I like to cook when I'm feeling upset or worried about my family and friends. Ever the pragmatist, making nourishing food for my loves and me fills the metaphorical and physical being. I had 2 kilograms of turmeric to do something with. (Anyone that has known me long enough knows I do bulk buying and cooking well! Fair warning then that my recipes make A LOT) To preserve the turmeric I made a version of my Anti-Inflammatory Turmeric, Ginger & Galangal paste and froze it ...in ice cube trays for easy tea and curry making down the track. I added cinnamon to this one (hence the flecks of brown in the picture). Coincidentally I'm talking all about inflammation this week, and that will mean that I talk a lot about herbs like turmeric. If you swipe left you'll see that we went for a walk in the sun. So nourishing for the soul. And made my low sugar, date-free bliss balls. Choc-orange flavour was today's request. Eaten with cups of tea in the fancy china. You can find both recipes on the blog here: https://akesohealthcare.com.au/category/recipes/ After a few days of feeling blah, and honouring this with lots of down time and fun activities, I'm feeling ready to get back in to working a bit more.

08.01.2022 DIGESTION BOOSTING, SIMPLE SALAD DRESSING 1 Gather ingredients of organic, extra virgin olive oil + fresh squeezed lemon juice OR organic apple cider vinegar 2 Add equal parts of oil and juice/vinegar to a small jar (with tight fitting lid). 3 Shake before drizzling over salad or vegetables... Flexible flavour options: You can add Dijon or seeded mustard (eg 1/2 tsp to 100mL oil/juice mix), salt + pepper, and/or crushed garlic to increase the flavour, but it's 100% tasty on its own. This dressing helps stimulate your digestive secretions like stomach acid, which may help reduce bloating, wind and nausea. Best enjoyed over bitter salad or vegetables to really get your digestion going. EG rocket, endive, radicchio, chicory, broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, kale, baby spinach And no, balsamic vinegar isn't a suitable substitute because it contains SUGAR. Joanna Kosinska on Unsplash

07.01.2022 Happy Anniversary & Happy New Year! (Seriously, after the start to this year, we should start again!) So it's a big day today. For a few reasons. Happy anniversary to Cam and I. We've been a couple for 20 years. As a couple we've navigated some huge events together. Truth be told, he's the only reason I made it through some times. So thanks Cam for being such a great person to navigate life with. ... It's also two years ago today that I hung up my shingle as Akeso Health. Well, hasn't that time flown. I must be having fun. Thanks to my clients for making my job the best job I've had. And finally, happy new financial year! What a time to pause and reflect on what has worked, what didn't work so well, how you feel, and where you want to go from here. Reflection fuels growth in your life, relationships, work and importantly your HEALTH. Reflection is a form of personal development, and it isn't just a thing you do for work. It's something we can all do, and it's a really important part of your health. I'm often talking with my clients about the child version of themselves, what did they used to do for fun? I get them to write a big list of all the things they loved to do, or want to do or know more about. Then the magic happens. They have a big ole list of things they can have a try of, or explore again. It brings a purpose and something to look forward to in among all the things you 'have' to do. Having a purpose brings happiness, joy and FUN back in to life. Humans are meant to have fun. Roller skating brings me much joy, as does walking on the beach, riding my bike and floating in the ocean. I'm starting this year by scheduling in some play dates for myself. What's on your fun list and when are you going to do it?

07.01.2022 Beautiful forget-me-nots to introduce the subject of forgetting-a-lot that comes with perimenopause. First up, you're not alone. Research says about 60% of us will have 'cognitive impairment'. If you've always prided yourself on your razor sharp mind and memory like an elephant, then it can be a rude shock in perimenopause when you start forgetting what you're talking about, where you put your keys, your kids names and so on. (What gets me often is forgetting a word or nam...e for something, especially if its noisy or kids are arguing. So frustrating, but if I pause and take a few deep breaths, it comes back to me.) And yes, its true that a stressed and tired brain has trouble remembering names (ask any Mum how many times they've had to list through the family and pets names to get to the right child's name when they're upset, angry or frightened! ). But this does seem to happen more in perimenopuase thanks to the changes in levels of oestrogen. Now the good news is that the body resettles and this passes once you've transitioned to menopause. phew! The other good news is that there's some food and lifestyle things you can do to help support brain health and reduce the amount you're forgetting. I left my phone in the fridge last week. What have you forgotten or left in an odd place? Photo by Noah Boyer on @Unsplash

06.01.2022 Fertilise your 'garden' (microbiome) with fermented foods and drinks. Just a little, not too much, or you (and those around you) will pay the price! If you've got a wobbly immune system, or a sensitive tummy, then go extra carefully; start with just half a teaspoon and build up to the 'dose' of 1 tablespoon/meal. (Or in the case of kefir and koimbucha, 1/4 cup/day.)... Fermented foods and drinks are usually one of the last things I introduce to my clients when we're working on their gut health. This is because fermented foods are high in histamine and will irritate many with gut or immune issues. This picture is of preserved lemons that were gifted to me, and my homemade sauerkraut. I made this batch with purple cabbage and carrots which is why it's such a lovely bright colour. If you've had sauerkraut before and not loved it, don't be shy with trying again, there's so many different brands and flavours available these days. I like the ones from Peace Love & Vegetables; Kehoe's Kitchen; Gaga's; and Terra Madre when I'm buying rather than making my own. Do you have a fave fermented food or drink?

04.01.2022 Feeling like Kermit after meals? Maybe you don't care about looking 'cute' (), you're just feeling pretty darned uncomfortable. Along with annoyed, frustrated and confused - that you're avoiding certain foods, but you're still getting bloated. Now you know why there's so many elastic waistbands in the 'mature' women's clothing section! Uh-huh, you're not alone in noticing changes in your gut during perimenopause and in to menopause.... If you'd like some help to figure out why you're getting bloating, not tolerating some foods, or developing new gut symptoms like bloating, reflux, constipation or diarrhoea. I can help you to work out what's going on inside, what the triggers are, and how to reverse those annoying and inconvenient symptoms that leave you looking like you're pregnant again. If you'd like to get going to 'Ban the Bloat' then please send me a message, and let's sort you out.

03.01.2022 When was the last time you woke up feeling great. Or even just ok? Don't remember? ... Know this: Midlife doesn't have to mean feeling crappy You don't need to put up with low energy, chaotic moods, insomnia, flushes and more Knowledge is power - understanding your body and how things like your hormones work puts you in the drivers seat of your health When you know the right foods and how to eat for your body, the rest falls in to place Food is medicine that gives you long-term control of your health Being healthy doesn't have to involve dieting, deprivation or missing out. You can do Christmas! Send me a message if you'd like to know how Metabolic Balance and my signature system 'The Chaos to Calm Method' can help you master chaotic mood swings, changing hormones (and waistline!); so you feel calm, in-control, and less stressed, to make it to menopause without it ruining your life.

03.01.2022 As oestrogen and progesterone levels decline during perimenopause and in to menopause, the function of your intestines ('the gut') is altered. This might manifest for you with changes in the foods you tolerate, nausea, stomach or abdominal cramps/pain, or how bloated or gassy you get after meals. (Do you burp or fart more than your teenager these days?!) If you're interested in why this happens, it can be because oestrogen and oestrogen-like compounds help prevent the los...s of your microbe friends, while also promoting their growth. For optimal hormonal balance, you need the right blend of microbes in your microbiome. And for a happy gut, you need the right balance of hormones, along with plenty of anti-oxidant compounds and fibre from plant foods. Something simple you can do to help boost your gut health and hormonal health is to eat a couple of tablespoons of ground flaxseeds, or flaxseed oil over the day. If you'd like to know more about how to support your gut health and how I may help you optimise yours (no more farty pants!) then have a look at my blog and here: https://www.akesohealthcare.com.au/ser/microbiome-analysis/

03.01.2022 Remember when you thought people in their 40s were old? And now, here we are. (What is the benchmark for old now?!) So what's the best thing about being in your 40s? Apart from developing ninja-like skills in hiding and eating chocolate without my kids finding out; it's the depth of understanding and love I now have for myself. ... This understanding has given me a sense of confidence of not caring so much about what people might think about me. Gosh that had held me back! Swipe to see me stepping out in socks, sandals and track pants the other day and not caring. Of course lock downs have helped this be more acceptable too! My 40s have also seen me understand the vital importance of prioritising myself and my needs. I'm currently undoing the damage from 10 years of trauma, hardship and the associated stress with food and my personalised Metabolic Balance plan. It's doing fabulous things for my energy, stress resilience, anxiety, hormones, cravings and sleep. (And my 'stress-baby bump' is disappearing too!) Tell me then, what's the best thing about being in your 40s? See more

02.01.2022 For 40+ is it the lift playing my song?! @malary.pittz

02.01.2022 I remember that it took me ages to decide to buy these pants. Not because I did/didn't like them. I loved the linen fabric, the colour and style were right. It was the size. They were the biggest pants I'd ever bought in my life. While size and shape don't make the woman. That size wasn't a comfy fit for my body to cart me around doing all the things I wanted and needed to do.... At size 18 I was tired. Exhausted even after lots of sleep. (Which by the way, was rarely refreshing because I snored so much.) My knees, ankles and back hurt. I was cranky AF, even on a good day. It was buying those pants that helped me pay attention and realise that I needed to help myself, so I could continue to be of service to others. Amazing what a difference 4 months eating whole foods that are right for me, based on my blood biochemistry, and a solid plan could make. Honestly, even I was expecting such a rapid transformation. I don't think I allowed myself to even hope that I might feel more like my younger self again. At size 12 my body isn't super slim. But it's comfortable. Importantly my visceral fat is in a healthy range. My blood glucose and insulin levels are balanced, which means a clearer head, more energy, and less irritation. While my program is full for 2020, and January spots are going quick too, if you'd like to apply for your spot, then book your January discovery call, and lock in access to 2020 prices. Find the link to book in my bio, comment below, or send me a message and lets get you sorted for a fab 2021. Foxbelle Photography
