21.01.2022 Here are 7 reasons why buying from your local market is a great idea: 1. You support local growers and businesses (which is especially important in these times). 2. You buy direct from growers and can ask questions about their produce.... 3. Local markets are a social environment, with an opportunity to meet with friends, stay in contact with stallholders, and talk to people you haven't met. 4. Browsing a local market is a great way to enjoy the outdoors on a sunny day. 5. Local markets provide a wide variety of products that often can't be found elsewhere. 6. If you live nearby, walking or riding to the market is a great opportunity for exercise. 7. Local markets are typically full of items sold at lower prices than other retail outlets. Can you think of any more points to add to this list? Let us know in the comments.

13.01.2022 Stallholder Profile - Julie and Ross Doherty Our mad Tigers supporters have been stallholders for 26 years...yes 26 years and they have never missed a market! Julie and Ross sell a variety of delicious cheese as well as pet supplies. Now there is an unusual combination for you, but like all good yarns there is a story behind this stall. The lovely couple originally came to the Market selling framed pictures in the front sheds. They eventually decided that pet supplies might... be a better option so changed their product. Ross worked for Kraft, Bonlac and the DPI as a cheese taster, he also Judged cheese at the Royal Melbourne Show and the VIC and AUS Championships. When he gave some cheese to a former Market Manager as a gift, Marty told him to get that cheese in the market! So that is how the cheese and pet supplies came to be side by side in one stall. Oh there is one more thing, they also had a pie stall at one stage which Julie ran with their 6 children. This is one versatile couple. Ross and Julie always fly the flag each week for their beloved Tigers. Maybe this is because Rosss Dad Noel Doherty played for them in the 1940s alongside Jack Dyer. Noel was Richmonds 422nd player, and Ross has number plates to commemorate it. Pop into the market this week and have a chat to Ross and Julie in site 30. They would love to see you there. 12.01.2022 Stallholder profile - Dheavii Farms The best part of the market is our lovely customers who we meet every market day. Every day we are encouraged to learn, improve and produce quality eggs to meet our customer expectations. That’s the reason we never missed a market, whether it’s raining, windy or hot. Raj has been selling his ‘paddock eggs’ at Akoonah Park Market since the beginning of 2017 and hasn’t missed a single market since. Raj and his wife Vadi were brought up in ...farming families in India, where they gained skills and theory in small-scale farming. This helped them to start their sustainable egg farm in Lang Lang after moving to Australia in 2012. Raj and Vadi are software professionals, but wanted to put their farming skills and knowledge to use. We decided to build a sustainable farming practice that produces good food for the people in our community says Raj. The chickens are truly pasture-raised and the process involves no chemicals or hormone additives. The farm contains trailer-based coops, with less than 100 birds per hectare. The only way to experience the quality is to try it yourself, so make sure to visit Raj’s stall next Sunday! (Number 235, facing the Princes Highway near the Gate 3 entrance). https://www.dheaviifarms.com.au
10.01.2022 Stallholder profile - Kerry Norton Although many of our stalls are closed at the moment some stallholders are selling online. Here is the first of our Stallholder Profiles. Our Book Lady Kerry Norton has lived in Berwick since 1985. In that time she has visited our Market almost every Sunday as either a stallholder or as a visitor. The bookshop was always on the list for Kerry and her daughter Shani to visit each week. Our secondhand bookshop has been an iconic part of the ...Market since the early 1990s. When Kerry saw a "for sale sign on the bookshop she jumped at the chance to take on the challenge of owning this local icon. Kerry has established herself as a legend at the market. Her vivacious personality and infectious laugh leave everyone she comes into contact with feeling just that bit happier. "I would come to the Market every week with my daughter Shani - it was her favourite place" Kerry told us. Sadly Shani passed away in a car accident in 1997 - Kerry named the bookshop after her little girl in her honour. "When I saw the for sale sign I just knew that I had to buy it in Shanis memory. I always feel like she is here with me." Kerrys stall is currently closed, but you can contact her through her Facebook page for sales of her books - she would love to hear from you! https://www.facebook.com/Shanis-Corner-Bookshop-Online-165041067387279 See more

06.01.2022 Stallholder profile: Godfrey (Leisureland Nursery) Godfrey has been interested in plants since he was 10 years old. His stall, which sells succulents, potted colour, grasses and roses, has been trading at the market for eight years. The stall started small he says, but has expanded over time. Now, because of his competitive prices, it has become very popular. He grows the stock in his backyard and never uses sprays. After this week's Wednesday market, the Sunday market will resume on January 3 (8:00AM-1:30PM, 2 Cardinia Street, Berwick), so be sure to visit Godfrey and find a high quality and very well priced product!
05.01.2022 Stallholder profile - Steve's Tools Steve began selling tools at the turn of the millennium and hasn't looked back since. He buys tools, fittings, work accessories, garden hoses and more wholesale, which he sells at an exceptional price each Sunday at the market. Come and find him next week at stalls 117 and 116!... Their home nursery business began as a retail supplier, but they soon moved to wholesale. Overall, they are glad they made the transition they say and enjoy trading at the market each Sunday. Their stall is located on the highway side of Shed B. Make sure you drop in one Sunday soon to browse their great range of plants and trees!

02.01.2022 Stallholder profile - Jeff & Margaret Brain Whilst many of our stallholders are unable to trade at the Market, some are selling online or delivering to your door. If you have visited Akoonah Park Market you are likely to know this lovely couple from Shed 4, but you may not know that they have a close family network there also. When Jeff & Margaret sold their power equipment business in 2002, it took them just a few short weeks to realise that retirement was not for them. They... started selling gloves and PPE at markets and field days around Victoria, but soon settled on Akoonah Park Market as their permanent Sunday home. Jeff & Margaret sell a wide range of quality deerskin, leather, redback gardening and disposable gloves, safety glasses, earmuffs and dust masks. They pride themselves on quality products and service. "We have a quality range of products and can advise people on the best equipment for the job. We have learned that the best products are the ones that do what they say they will." Jeff and Margaret told us. Knowing their product, teamed with exceptional customer service has led to a loyal following with customers becoming friends over the years. The Brain family have had their children and grandchildren holding the fort for them along the way. Their daughter Kellie and her husband Jason now own the Burgers Plus food truck which trades each Sunday also. Thats 3 generations of family involvement, and the Market couldnt be happier to have them all with us each week. Jeff and Margaret can be contacted on 0430312055 or by email [email protected] See more

01.01.2022 Stallholder profile - Peter Mullens This week we are profiling a stallholder who has been trading with us for over 15 years. If you have been following our Facebook page over the last few years or have been to the market, you will know Peters face and his very popular stall. Peter sells only the freshest vegetables and eggs each Sunday...and when I say each Sunday, I mean that he has never missed a market! Rain hail or shine (even if it is blowing a gale), Peter and his love...ly daughter are there with their own home grown produce along with goods from other local producers. Peter has a knack for displaying his products, so his stall is always a feast for the eyes. He also grows incredible hanging baskets which we will look forward to seeing again after lock-down. Because Peter sells food he is trading as usual this Sunday. Pop by to say hello. Akoonah Park Market Every Sunday - 8.00 - 1.30pm 2 Cardinia Street Berwick See you there! See more
