23.01.2022 Some years ago, I was working on a solution for a client when their network got hit with the Conficker virus. It started out in their test lab infecting a couple of machines. They formatted and rebuilt the servers. But as soon as they reconnected them to the network the original machines would get re-infected again. After a week, the whole test lab had become completely infected. Their strategy was too little too late. The following week the virus had made its way to the corp...orate office network. It was officially out of control and I was asked to assist. First, we shut down the all the switches. Second, we shut down every computer and server in the building. Third, was to completely rebuild every computer system, one-by-one, manually. It took over a month, but it was the only way to guarantee virus would not re-infect. Finally we powered on the switches, and then everything else, one-by-one. There was downtime, loss of revenue, a reputation hit, but it recovered. After 2 months the environment was operating as normal again. It could have been a lot worse. It could have been catastrophic. So when you think of the #COVID19 situation, just think of it like a computer virus. At what point would you be comfortable turning on your servers.... #security #virus #IT

21.01.2022 Always stock spare SFP's close to your network gear. They're not cheap but it saves so much time troubleshooting, and ultimately less downtime. Issue resolved in less than 5 minutes.

20.01.2022 As much as we love #HCI and most platforms running on vSAN, we still get worried when clients insist on deploying 2-node ROBO clusters. It's usually due to lack of understanding of the limitations, a perception of cost savings, or simply being misled by vendor sales teams. We *always* try to steer them away from this decision as the initial cost savings are often offset with the additional complexity and limitations, and I don't like saying "I told you so". While there have... been significant advances in vSAN since vSphere 5.5, I believe this rule of thumb still applies: 1. The essential number for nodes in a small site is 3 2. The right minimum number of nodes in a small site is 4 3. The budget minimum number of nodes is 2, but should only be reserved for PoC or labs VMware have just announced a 2-Node solution for VMC on AWS, which is exciting, and maybe the only situation that I would support the use of the 2-node cluster.
