Ask someone to think of the movie and it will be the music and this scene that comes to mind. Huge congratulations to Yankunytjatjara artist and Anangu cultural leader Peter Mungkuri on being nominated for Senior Australian of the Year! Teaching from his immense knowledge of culture, history, and Country, Mungkuri is a leader and mentor to young Aboriginal men and women across the APY Lands. Born in the rugged bush lands near Fregon, Mungkuri worked for many years as a stockman across the central desert. Campaigning for systemic change, Mungkuri was integral to the South Australian Land Rights Legislation that saw the return of the APY Lands to Anangu and the establishment of the Indulkana community. Mungkuri continues to work for the South Australian Native Title today. A prolific artist, Mungkuri was the winner of the Hadley Art Prize in 2017, in 2018 he was the winner of the General Painting Award at the 35th NATSIAA event. Peter has been shortlisted for the Wynne Prize in 2019 and 2020.
