Emu egg carvings offer a rich visual history - commemorating, depicting and telling stories of Australian traditions, adventure and environment. For Aboriginal Australians, they also reinforce connections to other animals, and especially the emu, as well as to land. Denied traditional forms of cultural expression, Indigenous communities adopted the emu egg as a medium to tell stories, explain totems and reveal knowledge of land, place and identity, strengthening and retaining links to the past.

Stoneware body with stylised gum leaves around the bowl made at Doulton’s Lambeth, London Factory, the original Doulton pottery dating back to 1815. Our koala bibelot is a little pin dish with modeller Maud Bowden’s 'MB' Doulton signature mark underneath. A loyal and committed modeller, Bowden worked with Doulton from 1903 - 1937, through the evolution of seve...ral design styles. While Doulton produced a range of pieces based on Australian flora and fauna, this is the first time to our knowledge that Doulton featured the beloved Australian koala. Doulton had more female modellers than any other factory, and the forward thinking Henry Doulton was the first modeller to be knighted in 1897 for his hiring of women to create decorations and designs, a significant step up from their involvement in the more mundane parts of the process.
