22.01.2022 Visiting Port Hedland today to meet with the team responsible for ensuring the safety of the community in the response to the Patricia Oldendorff vessel and COV...ID-19 cases. I am assured all is going well and the crew are in good health. I want to reassure the Port Hedland community that safety of the maritime workers, emergency services and transport staff, hotel staff and the local community continues to be our number one priority. The Department of Health is experienced in managing outbreaks on vessels and is putting every precaution in place to protect the local community. The hotel quarantine facilities at place in Port Hedland use the same tried and tested models that are in place in the Perth metropolitan area. The model has been overseen by the State Health Incident Coordination Centre, and only fully-trained WA Medical Assistance Team personnel wearing PPE are in contact with the crew in hotel quarantine in Port Hedland. I have visited the Hedland Health Campus with Kevin Michel MLA and met with clinical nurse, Joyce Davis and other hard-working health staff. I will also be meeting with the Pilbara Port Authority and the WA Medical Assistance Team (WAMAT). The WAMAT team have been working hard on the ground to ensure that the crew are kept safe and well and that all protocols are adhered to. This evening I will be co-hosting a community forum to let the community know what is happening and to assure locals that everything is being done to keep them safe.

21.01.2022 This is Sarah. Last time we met was at Parliament a few years ago. Sarah and the Keady Upton School of Irish Dancing danced their way into our hearts at a St Patrick’s Day function hosted by Stephen Dawson MLC and I. We showed a bit of Irish style (well, Sarah did) in support of fabulous Lisa Baker Member for Maylands at a very lovely event tonight.

19.01.2022 Latest update from the Premier: I can now provide official confirmation that WA's hard border arrangements WILL transition to a controlled interstate border at 12:01am tonight. We always said we would wait until the very end before confirming the transition, based on infection rates over east....Continue reading

19.01.2022 Now here’s a long weekend story for you ... all about a pool cue, polio epidemic, social distancing and a Queen ...

18.01.2022 Western Australia has led the nation in our response to COVID-19. While we are seeing strong signs that WA is moving faster than expected, we know that some families need some extra support as they get back on their feet. For households experiencing financial hardship as a result of the pandemic, we’re extending the moratorium on residential water and electricity disconnections, ensuring no family will have their water or power cut off if they cannot pay their bills.... This is in addition to our $402 million commitment to freeze household fees and charges until at least July 1, 2021. Western Australians have done a remarkable job in responding to the pandemic. But we’re not out of the woods yet, and these important support measures will help ensure Western Australia is in a position to recover stronger than ever.

18.01.2022 On Remembrance Day, we come together as a community to reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives to defend our freedoms. We observe one minute’s silence on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month each year to honour those who lived and died during WWI and in other wars and conflicts involving Australia’s armed services. I encourage people throughout the East Metro Region to show their respect for those who have served in the Australian defence forces by observing one minute’s silence.

17.01.2022 The latest update from the Premier: As you now know, the community outbreak of COVID-19 in South Australia is extremely serious. As a result, yesterday, we acted swiftly to strengthen our controlled border regime with South Australia. Those were initial steps to protect all Western Australians, until we received further information on the South Australian outbreak. I can now outline some further measures to protect the health and safety of the WA community.... Since our announcements yesterday, I am advised that the updated controlled border regime with South Australia has come into effect without major issues. I understand those changes have caused frustration and disappointment for some, but this is a deadly virus that we cannot take any chances on. Here in Western Australia, we will do whatever it takes to protect our citizens and our way of life. I always said that we would not hesitate to bring in tougher border controls if required. Unfortunately, the time for those tougher border controls came faster than anyone could have expected. And we don’t have time to waste. That’s why on, on further advice from our Chief Health Officer this morning, we have decided to take further steps to protect our State and reduce the risk of the virus entering WA. Given the size of the outbreak, our Chief Health Officer has now determined that South Australia has moved from a ‘very low risk’ category to the ‘medium risk’ category. This is the highest rating of any other state or territory and South Australia may move to the ‘high risk’ category very soon.

08.01.2022 The last we heard the WA Liberals didn’t think Byford Rail was needed until 2050. They don’t want the Byford Rail line they use any excuse to delay and criticise job-creating METRONET projects. Today the Member for Darling Range, who promised to support the rail extension at the last election, now says it’s too hard and we should delay it again.... It’s not good enough. The McGowan Government will deliver the Byford Rail extension beginning with works this year.

06.01.2022 Western Australia has built a reputation as a world class hub for defence manufacturing, particularly on maritime projects. It's a highly competitive market, bu...t one with the potential to create thousands of local jobs for WA workers. We've put a lot of work into building our local industry across our time in Government, and today we've announced another key boost for local workers. Today we've announced a package of over $18 million in initiatives that will boost local skills and training and create hundreds of new apprentices in WA's defence manufacturing industry. The new package includes funding to create new short TAFE courses to upskill Western Australians with the skills they need to work on defence projects, funding to equipment at South Metropolitan TAFE and two new scholarship programs to help women and Defence veterans access training. It also includes funding to deliver an additional 335 apprenticeship commencements and new $20,000 incentives for shipbuilding employers to take on apprentices. We're committed to revitalising WA manufacturing and delivering quality local jobs, and this is just the latest initiative which will help make that happen. This package will get more Western Australians trained and into jobs, and to continue attracting valuable, job-creating contracts to Western Australia.
