24.01.2022 New blog post covering the essentials of consent for treatment http://www.southwestortho.com.au//the-essentials-of-consent

24.01.2022 No surgery is risk-free or guaranteed to help, and the alternatives should always be discussed, as in this interesting piece.

24.01.2022 There has been much talk lately about surgery for rotator cuff problems and the pain of impingement. This graphic details the positive things that non-surgical treatment can offer to improve your shoulder pain and function.

23.01.2022 Congratulations to Brierly Bulls Seniors and U-17s, big winners over the weekend!! We are proud to sponsor local cricket.

23.01.2022 No boot camps, no detox, no weird diets; just keep moving and eat a little less!! Some very sound, simple advice here.

23.01.2022 because picking things up and moving them mimics normal life. or rather, it is normal life.

23.01.2022 A bit of a deep dive into this difficult area is worthwhile.

22.01.2022 Lots of great positive publicity for the AFLW this past week, but the Grand Final featured two significant knee injuries. We need to be doing more to protect young athletes from sports injuries, particularly girls and women, and this evidence-based protocol from FIFA could be adopted by Australian rules football teams.

21.01.2022 Why put this up here? Because this just looks crazy, but in fact was carefully controlled and was the product of an enormous amount of preparation, in skill development, fitness and mental preparation. We can learn from that. And the drone shots are just amazing!

21.01.2022 While functional exercises like step ups, squats and lunges are most likely to mimic "real life", there can be a place for isolated exercises like this, particularly in a managed rehab programme. Eccentric work (lowering the legs slowly on this machine) can be a really good way to build quads bulk and strength.

21.01.2022 I dont see patients coming for surgery for tennis elbow so much these days, as physio treatment has improved. If you have pain at the outer part of the elbow, work when gripping, these exercises may be helpful for you.

20.01.2022 I spend a lot of time discussing this sort of thing with patients about to have an ACL reconstruction - how to manage return to sports a year later, and the importance of prolonged rehab, proper preparation and proper assessment prior to getting back on the field or court. It is so important to consider the impact on both knees.

20.01.2022 Not everyone who ruptures their ACL needs a reconstruction, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. The trick is to work out the impact of the injury on your lifestyle and expectations, and that takes time and careful consideration. When that is done well, the correct decision can be made for the individual. Like the4 study below, we have shown this in a published study where of patients had surgery did not, and 2-4 years later patients in both groups were happy with their decision and returned to activities, while none of the non-surgical group had subsequent surgery. 20.01.2022 Following on from my recent re-post about injury prevention, this excellent post appeared today. Ask your coaches!

19.01.2022 when I started doing joint replacements as a trainee, patients stayed in hospital 2 weeks or more. Gradually, we have been getting this down - 10 days, a week, 5 days. Now, most of my patients go home on day 4, and some on day 2 or 3. These reductions have come with reduction in hospital-acquired complications, including infection and DVT, but progressive reductions in length of stay have become harder to achieve. Day stay joint replacement is only suitable for a small sub-set (15% in the article below), and requires a lot of planning and some changes in technique. But we can all learn from this sort of process, in the way we manage pain and get people mobile after major joint surgery.

18.01.2022 The short answer is "no"; the evidence does not support bracing in post-op period or on return to sports. What you need is good rehab, with return to sport after a proper capacity assessment.

18.01.2022 The best sort of exercise is the exercise that gets done, but if you really want to get benefit, then adding some intensity is important, at all ages. https://www.westernalliance.org.au//exercise-weight-loss-a

17.01.2022 Not every ACL injury needs surgery, but some do.....

17.01.2022 Superstar. Perhaps an overused term these days. But sometimes you unexpectedly bump up against one. Someone who quietly achieves something truly remarkable. And Paul Watkins certainly pulled off the remarkable, not just finishing a 380 mile foot race in the Arctic Circle that has a completion rate so low that some years there are no finishers, but actually winning the thing. Read the story of his 6633 Arctic Ultra race here (over this and following pages on his blog) for some real inspiration that makes everyday challenges just a little more manageable. https://www.roadslesstraveled.com.au//is-it-wilderness-or- https://www.6633ultra.com https://static1.squarespace.com//1554532885/PNOHE1625.jpg

15.01.2022 The holy grails of knee surgery - Lachman and pivot shift testing. With these tests, do you always need an MRI to make the diagnosis. of ACL tear?

15.01.2022 Ive seen a huge surge in ACL injuries at may clinic over the last few weeks - end of football and netball season, as well as Australian ski season, which is a bit unusual. Clearly a sports injury, this video highlights the fact that collision contact is not always required, and that injury prevention programmes can make a huge difference in reducing injuries. What does your sports coach do to protect you?

14.01.2022 Some of these exercises might be a bit hardcore in early management of rotator cuff problems, but they do demonstrate the pathway that can be followed to get the best possible functional result, often without the need for surgery.

14.01.2022 Who would have thought? Diet and exercise are better than pills and washouts. This doesnt mean that joint replacement or even arthroscopy is no good, but a lot of people can gain a great deal of benefit without having to go through an operation or take tablets long-term.

12.01.2022 New blog post on treating ACL injuries

11.01.2022 Really interesting film; do you know what is ahead of you as you recover from an ACL injury?

11.01.2022 ACL tears are not just pivoting injuries; this hyperextension injury brings tears to the eyes.

08.01.2022 this is an extreme example of this common injury. A lot can be done with physio, but it has to be good physio, including balance training.

08.01.2022 marginally hilarious, but it looks like it would work as well!! I reckon it could catch on!

08.01.2022 Publication of research findings is really important - the positive trials and the negative trials. Important work by Ben Goldacre.

06.01.2022 I was very fortunate to do a fellowship with Julian Feller back in 2003; it was a great experience, and I learnt a great deal. Julian is one of Australias most influential surgeons and is very thoughtful about knee problems, the ACL in particular. There are plenty of good questions and answers in this article, which is well worth reading in full if you are involved with sports and sports injuries.

04.01.2022 Just keep moving!

03.01.2022 Its what we most often have to go over at the 2 week review - "can you get to full extension?". This is a useful exercise variation to help achieve that important early goal.

01.01.2022 When done carefully under proper supervision, the CrossFit group exercise model can be good for anyone looking to get fit for life. And you certainly dont need to be a pro athlete to benefit. Just keep moving, get stronger for everyday life. CrossFit Warrnambool
