24.01.2022 With the holiday season almost upon us we've decided to publish a series of tips to ensure your home is safe from burglary or theft on holiday. TIP 3. Invest in some Gadgets. These days there are a bewildering assortment of security devices to help secure, monitor and make the house look occupied when you are on holiday. The most basic version of this is to use timed electrical sockets. These are relatively inexpensive and are timed to turn on lights or a radio etc giving the... appearance that the property is occupied. CCTV cameras have drastically reduced in cost in recent years. Most are now wireless and easy to install. Cameras act as a visual deterrent when positioned externally and with HD resolutions available they can act as a valuable tool in apprehending offenders. We recently attended a lock repair in Edinburgh where a thief had attempted(unsuccessfully) to break in through French windows. The owner had realised this was a weak spot and placed a Neos SmartCam on the window sill. When the police review the cam footage they could clearly see the crooks face peer in through the window not only that, they new him well as he "had form". He was apprehended that day. Today more security devices an defined as "Smart" meaning the can be contacted via the internet. Some setups allow owners get alerts and view there property remotely although that's not the thing you want when trying to relax on holiday. 21.01.2022 Had a customer locked IN on this Obscure Yale lock. Its a hybrid of a Sash lock combined with a rim cylinder and internal knob. The design flaw is two buttons under the latch bolt deadlock the knob but not the latch. So if you accidentally press a button and close the door you are locked in! No wonder it didnt catch on!

18.01.2022 Shocking new burglary technique is being used across the country. That is the use of a blow torch to gain access to properties with UPVC doors. While I wont go into detail about how this technique is executed. It seems to becoming more prevalent in the North of England with some occupants being threatened with the lit Blow torch once the thieves have gained entry . We havent had any reports in the Lothians so far.But it wont be long before we do. We have to look and listen to what the concerns are and be willing to respond to them, not to respond to what is said, but try to understand the motivation for why it is being said." in other words we wont try sort your complaints but try to understand why you are complaining. DUH!!! This administration just dont get it on so many fronts and need booted out.

13.01.2022 Had a job in Craigleith Hill yesterday. Changing locks as the owner had just moved in to the property. The customer wanted an estimate of costs before she confirmed the appointment, which I supplied. On arriving at the property. The customer explained that at her last house shed previously been charged 500! to change two cylinders. Not only that the locksmith had installed restricted keys and charged 40 per additional key! The customer couldnt or wouldnt tell me the name but I have a fair idea who it was. No, not a call centre, but it goes to show their a few cowboy locksmiths operating in Edinburgh beware! At Albany locksmiths it our policy to provide cost estimates before carrying out any work and certainly wouldnt take advantage of an elderly single lady. Shocking behaviour in any trade.

13.01.2022 At last an alternative to the Union/Chubb 3g110 deadlock. Which is a tad expensive to say the least. the Apecs LX5 offers a quality alternative and is BS:3621 cert. Retailing at 80 which is more than 30% cheaper than the 3g110. Great if you have to replace a 3g110, for new installs Id still go with Union Strong bolts.

12.01.2022 Unfortunately We had to attend a break-in in Edinburghs Newtown yesterday. The thiefs gained entry by hooking keys from a bureau situated four feet from the letter box! They took cash jewellery and a nice new car! Avoidable, but sadly something we see on a regular basis. Never leave keys in a hallway, on hooks or within sight of a window. you know it makes sense.

12.01.2022 Spot the damaged Yale Lock! The lock on the right was kicked open the other night. The gap on the left side of its bolt is caused by the bolt frame being bent by the blunt force. The lock may still operate but is liable to jamming also it take a lot less force to open. Sometimes a push with the hand will do it. If your lock is like this it needs replaced. In most cases you can retain the cylinder and therefore keep the same keys.

10.01.2022 Got a new card reader today. The iZettle seems to be the market leader just now. Like everything these days it links to an App on a smartphone and has loads of cool features like text/email invoicing, contactless etc. Lets hope it lives up to the reviews, Connectivity and battery life always let the predecessors down. 09.01.2022 Separated Garage blocks are especially prone to breakins. Just installed 6 garage defender on a block of 10. Part of a Estate house in Midlothian which had been divided into flats. The Garages have been targeted three times in recent months. A rare Whiskey collection taken from one?! I expect to hear from the remaining owners in the next few weeks.

08.01.2022 Ten years ago Edinburgh Locksmiths would pay thousands of pound for a prominent ad in the Yellow Pages. There are still Locksmiths in this wee book today but I doubt anyone under 80 keeps a copy. This is one directory even my mum could tear in half. It says "Final Edition" maybe I shoud keep it as a future collectable

07.01.2022 The result of 20 years of serving the occupants of 10 flats, The keyway on the RHS cylinder has virtually gone making it a gamble whether you get in or not. New cylinder and keys for every one. At Albany locksmiths we can cut keys in advance of the cylinder change, this makes the with over more manageable.
