Stretching tight neck muscles increases flexibility, which can improve and maintain range of motion (ROM) in the cervical joints of the neck. This may lead to a reduction in neck stiffness, which in turn may reduce neck pain. 2. Strengthening Strengthening exercises focusing on weakened muscles will help maintain improved posture, which will lessen and hopefully eliminate flare-ups of pain. 3. Aerobic Conditioning Aerobic conditioning increases blood flow to the muscles and soft tissues of the neck and upper back, which can help loosen the muscles and increase range of motion. 4. Trigger Point Therapy Trigger point therapy is a remedial massage technique where direct pressure is applied to specified points on tender muscles to aid in the reduction and relief of muscle tension and pain. Latent trigger points can become activated by muscle overuse, inflammation, trauma, infections, nerve pain and electrolyte imbalances. Fascia is thin, tough, elastic type of connective tissue which forms a continuous 'netting' covering & surrounding most structures within the body, including muscle. Muscles and fascia are anatomically inseparable, meaning that when muscular activity occurs fascia moves with it, which also has an effect on bones, joints, ligaments and tendons.... What this all means is that when a restriction or tightness occurs in one area of the body it may cause pain and dysfunction in other areas as well. So optimal body health is reliant on the correct functioning of the fascia allowing for free unrestricted movement. Myofascial pain is a distinct pain that originates in both the muscle and the fascia. This soft tissue can become restricted due to overuse, trauma, or inactivity which can result in pain, muscle tension and diminished blood flow. How can massage therapy help? Massage may be beneficial as it helps to stretch and loosen the fascia so that muscles and associated structures can move more freely, reducing pain and improving range of movement.

The forward head and shoulder posture causes the muscles of the upper back to continually overwork trying to counter balance gravity's pull on the forward head. These upper back muscles become overstretched and weakened. 3. This position is usually accompanied by forward shoulders and a rounded upper back, which not only exacerbates the neck problems but can also cause shoulder pain. The longer a person maintains this poor postural position, the more likely it is that they will develop neck and shoulder problems.
