25.01.2022 Sydney is rolling out the red carpet for return travellers from Victoria. I'm off to Melbourne today to talk with Peter Khalil and Dan Andrews about social housing. We need to get our economy going again, and that means creating jobs. It also means making sure we're a compassionate country. One that lifts people up who are doing it tough. That's where social housing comes in. See you soon, Melbourne.
25.01.2022 It’s time to back Australian manufacturing and Australian jobs. Hundreds of rail carriages will be needed in the next two decades. Let’s build them here.
24.01.2022 Sat down for a (socially distanced) meeting with Dan Andrews on the first day the borders opened up to Victoria. This has been one hell of a year, especially for Victorians. But they've pulled through, and it's great that Christmas will see families reunited. ... This year we've had a major health challenge dealing with the coronavirus. But now we also have a massive economic challenge ahead of us. We need bold vision, strong leadership, and a lot of building if we're to emerge on the other side of this pandemic. The Victorian Labor Government's $5.3 billion investment in social housing is a great start. It will mean tens of thousands of jobs. But we need to see action at a federal level. And we need a Labor Government to get it done.
22.01.2022 We need a real plan for the recovery one that creates jobs now, and sets Australia up for the future. An Australia that makes things, that looks after our most vulnerable, and that backs our greatest resource our people. That's Labor's vision for this country.
22.01.2022 The Liberals' record on manufacturing is a farce. Australian projects and Australian jobs sent offshore. The end of our car industry. TAFE and training gutted. We've built things here before. We can build things here again. But only Labor will make it happen.
21.01.2022 Australia can become a renewable energy superpower. It will mean jobs for generations. All we need is leadership and I’m proud to lead a team that’s ready to get it done.
20.01.2022 Our diversity is our strength. Happy Diwali everyone. Our diversity is our strength. Happy Diwali everyone.
20.01.2022 We need jobs for Australians and skills for Australians while taking care of our most vulnerable Australians. This is Labor’s vision for the recovery: no one held back and no one left behind.
20.01.2022 Labor condemns the deeply offensive and inflammatory action by the Chinese Government, and stands with our Defence Force members who serve with honour and distinction.
19.01.2022 More children in early education means more parents at work. Making child care more affordable is good for society and it’s good for the country and that’s why Labor backs it. Under our plan, 97 per cent of families using child care will be better off.
19.01.2022 Exactly a year ago, during Black Summer, a fire tore through this area near Braidwood, NSW. It wouldn’t be until February that getting in the fire truck stopped being a daily occurrence for the firies. We all remember how the smoke from these fires came all the way to the capital cities. ... Fire season is expected to be different this year. For one thing, there’s been more rain lately, and the forest is starting to bounce back. But the rain also means there’s more long grass ready to burn. These communities need our support. Labor is calling for a national aerial firefighting fleet something the Morrison Government has refused to buy. We know for sure that the fires will come again. And we need to be ready.
18.01.2022 People are pretty clear in what they want right now: jobs, jobs and jobs. That'll be the real test for the Budget next week. Too many people have been left behind going into this recession. ... We need to make sure no-one is left behind during the recovery.
18.01.2022 This message is for the Chinese-Australian community. We're here. We're listening. We'll stand up for you.
17.01.2022 This is a big moment for Australia. We need leaders who step up, take charge, and take responsibility. We need leaders who won't hold Australians back, and who won't leave them behind.
17.01.2022 Here's something you might have missed over the weekend. It just got a whole lot easier for childcare fees to skyrocket again. We're in the worst economic crisis in three decades, and this Government is leaving families to fend for themselves.
16.01.2022 The only thing Scott Morrison has ever manufactured is a headline.
16.01.2022 We've got bushfires burning across the country already. As we get further into summer, we can only expect more. I want to say to all the firefighters and emergency services personnel putting themselves in harm's way to keep us safe thank you.
15.01.2022 According to Scott Morrison's Deputy Prime Minister, paying 10 times too much for a piece of land is a "bargain". What planet are they on?
15.01.2022 The 2,000 Qantas workers who have lost their jobs are the latest victims of the Morrison Government's total failure to support the aviation industry. My heart goes out to all the families. Today will be a tough day. Australia just doesn't work without planes in the sky. ... But we've seen the Morrison Government deny support to airports, deny JobKeeper to ground crew, and let Virgin Australia fall into administration. They've done nothing as Qantas sacks thousands this year alone. Labor has always stood with aviation workers and we always will.
15.01.2022 There are plenty of social housing units that need repair, and plenty that need building. I went to Brunswick this morning with Peter Khalil to talk with residents about their needs. Peter and I both grew up in social housing. I know first hand the power of having a safe place to call home. ... That’s something every Australian deserves. Dan Andrews has pledged $5.3 billion, but we’ve seen nothing from the Morrison Government. Labor will build more social housing because it’s good for jobs, and because it’s good for people.
14.01.2022 Scott Morrison's own health officials have admitted the Government could have done more to slow the spread of coronavirus. He should stop picking fights with premiers and focus on doing his own job keeping Australia safe from the virus, and getting people back to work.
14.01.2022 On my way to Canberra, saying goodbye to Toto. There are still 30,000+ stranded Aussies that need to come home. There is social housing that need to be built. There are families that can't afford to go back to work because of child care costs I'll be fighting for them.
14.01.2022 I love public libraries. They're more than just a place for books. It's where people come for a moment of peace and quiet. To study. To stumble upon something new. My local library in Marrickville re-opened last year. It's been nominated for a National Architecture Award and it's beautiful. This library is a monument to learning as all libraries should be because they're a symbol of who we are as a society.... Wouldn't it be great to see one of these in every suburb in Australia?
13.01.2022 Why does Scott Morrison think ripping away support is a good idea?
13.01.2022 Today I'll begin laying out Labor's vision as we chart the path to recovery. Everything we do must be for you for your jobs, and for your future. In short:
12.01.2022 Edward 'Teddy' Sheean will be awarded the Victoria Cross today. On this day, 78 years ago, Teddy strapped himself to the gun of the HMAS Armidale, which was sinking off the coast of Darwin. He fired on the enemy as the ship went down. ... His last actions were to sacrifice himself to save his mates. He was not even a gunner, but in that moment Teddy became a shield extended over his mates in the water. An ordinary seaman who rose to the extraordinary circumstances in which he found himself. He was only 18. He is the first member of the Royal Australian Navy to win a VC. We will remember him. We will honour him. Vale Teddy Sheean, VC.
11.01.2022 People need jobs fast. And governments should be creating them fast. These are my priorities. They'd create jobs today. This is what Labor wants for Australia.
10.01.2022 Made in Australia, for Australia, by Australians. That's the future I want for our country.
10.01.2022 They didn't have a plan for aged care. Now we learn they didn't have a plan for people with a disability. In both cases, people were left hungry, alone, and without care during a global pandemic. It's yet another example of the Morrison Government leaving the most vulnerable Australians behind.
10.01.2022 Let’s unleash the power of Australians. Let’s be a country that makes things.
10.01.2022 Scott Morrison hates scrutiny so much he’s got his ministers out there blocking inquiries into the scheme where they built pools in Liberal electorates. Why so secretive?
08.01.2022 Some people are going to use the pandemic as an excuse to cut your pay and take away your rights at work. We won't let them get away with it.
08.01.2022 This is a sensitive topic, but it's important. And I want to warn you it's about self harm. This is Julie-Ann Finney. ... Julie-Ann lost her son David to suicide last year. David had a long career in the Navy, but he battled with post traumatic stress injuries after his service. There are too many mothers facing what Julie-Ann faces. In the last three weeks alone, at least 10 veterans have taken their own life. Today, Labor has decided to oppose legislation for the Government's plan for a National Commissioner for veteran suicide. The Morrison Government has ignored the families like Julie-Ann who say they don't want this they want a genuine Royal Commission. A Labor Government will hold a Royal Commission into veteran suicide. It should be independent. And it should be fully funded. The people who have served this country in uniform deserve nothing less.
08.01.2022 Climate change is here. Cities choked with smoke. Fire seasons that are longer and more intense. Extreme weather that threatens entire communities. This isn't an academic exercise any more. We need to act and only Labor will.
07.01.2022 We've got the people. We've got the skills. Let's make them here.
07.01.2022 You'd think Scott Morrison's regulator would be doing something about this. Anything. Turns out they're not even showing up. We don't need another press conference from this Prime Minister. We need action.
05.01.2022 Neglect is the Morrison Government's legacy on aged care and it has cost more than 600 older Australians their lives.
05.01.2022 The test for next week's Budget isn't the quality of the slogans or the marketing stunts. It’s this: how quickly will the Morrison Government get Australia back to work?
05.01.2022 People want to work. People need jobs. It's up to the Government to make it happen.
05.01.2022 We won't stop talking about this. Innocent people had their lives ruined and those responsible must be held to account.
05.01.2022 It's nearly Christmas and there are still 30,000+ Aussies stranded overseas. We need to bring them home. It's nearly Christmas and there are still 30,000+ Aussies stranded overseas. We need to bring them home.
04.01.2022 Scott Morrison still refuses to sack his Aged Care Minister despite more than 660 people dying from coronavirus. Why does no-one in this Government ever step up and take responsibility for their failings?
04.01.2022 Another big speech from Scott Morrison. The cameras will flash. The media release will go out. But Australians will be asking themselves how much of today’s photo op will be empty words with no follow up?
02.01.2022 This is the moment the Morrison Government gagged debate about robodebt in Parliament today. What a disgrace. It's incredible how arrogant and dismissive they've been about wasting $1.2 billion on such a harmful scheme. ... Robodebt was a disaster from start to finish. It took the humanity out of human services. A computer program decided if people owed money. Then they were hounded by letter after letter. People even had to prove their innocence a total perversion of justice. The result? Hundreds of thousands of vulnerable Australians were chased for debts they didn't owe. It caused so much human misery. It's what happens when you have a Government that leaves people behind. And of course, nobody in the Morrison Government has taken any responsibility. It's always someone else's fault with this lot.
02.01.2022 Bushfire season is well and truly here, and what's clear is that these water bombers are essential. It absolutely defies belief that the Morrison Government has refused Labor's call for a dedicated national aerial firefighting fleet.
02.01.2022 He started robodebt as Social Services Minister. He bragged about robodebt as Treasurer. He continued robodebt as Prime Minister. No wonder he hasn't held anyone to account it was his program.
