24.01.2022 TIGER YALTANGKI ‘DINOSAURS AND ROCKERS’ 1 25 JULY 2020 Alcaston Gallery in conjunction with Iwantja Arts, SA proudly invite you to preview new paintings by Tiger Yaltangki.... Please contact the gallery for a preview catalogue or further information. One of the most exciting artists working in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands today, Tiger Yaltangki draws inspiration from his traditional Anangu heritage and his avid appreciation for popular culture to create a whimsical visual universe where vivid characters come to life within striking abstract landscapes. Yaltangki embraces a bold, idiosyncratic style of painting, and a masterful understanding of colour and composition in the creation of his Malpa Wiru (‘good friends’); his imaginative depictions of Pitjantjatjara Mamu, cheeky supernatural spirits that derive from traditional Anangu storytelling, together with his love for rock and roll music including AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, and science fiction television including Doctor Who and The Mighty Boosh, which continues to inspire and empower Yaltangki’s unique self-expression, and inform his impressive artistic output. Since he commenced painting at Iwantja Arts in the APY Lands, far north South Australia in 2007, Yaltangki’s career continues to reach new heights, having been curated into several significant exhibitions, including TARNANTHI Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art in 2015 and 2017 and the Adelaide Biennial Magic Object in 2016, both at the Art Gallery of South Australia; and The National: New Australian Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2017. In 2018 a major installation of Yaltangki’s paintings and sculpture were featured in the major exhibition A Lightness of Spirit is the Measure of Happiness at Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), Melbourne. In 2019 this installation was acquired and exhibited at the Fondation Opale, Switzerland. This year Yaltangki has been announced as a finalist in the 37th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards, making this his eighth year shortlisted for the prestigious prize.
