Call us to secure your spot 02-9699-2455 Wigilia is the traditional Christmas Eve vigil supper in Poland, held on December 24. The term is often applied to the whole of Christmas Eve, extending further to Pasterka - midnight Mass. The supper, which traditionally includes 12 dishes and desserts. Tradition calls for 12 traditional courses to be served during the Polish Christmas Eve. This number is a symbol of wealth, the 12 Apostles and a representation of the 12 months of the year. 17.01.2022 Fun Fact Wednesday: Autumn has arrived in Poland (Grateful for our amazing Spring in Australia of course :) ) By Malgorzata Pawelczyk and Jerzy Rajecki Golden Polish Autumn, (Zota Polska Jesie) that’s the phrase commonly used to describe this season. Summer is gone, the winter is approaching but the weather is great and it is time to celebrate and enjoy the colors. The trees are golden and rusty. In the first autumn month, September is usually beautiful, sunny, and warm ...in Poland. Sun shines bright, but rays at a different angle and so that it is not as hot as in June and July. In October some plants such as ivy and heather might still bloom. Numerous trees and bushes end their fruit season. Oak trees lose their ripe acorns. During this month a total change of colors takes place. Only coniferous trees retain their green color, other than that, the green disappears and gives place to bronze, red and yellow tones which create a unique autumn aura of beautiful Polish golden autumn, especially during sunny weather. The period of leaves’ fall is prolonged in time, as different species lose their leaves at different times. Life in water also becomes still, as more and more often ground frosts cover the water surface of smaller reservoirs with a thin layer of ice. November is the last month of the Polish autumn; it is definitely colder and more humid than e.g September. The fauna and flora period of vegetation is almost totally ended. On late bushes and trees, such as pines, junipers, spruces last seeds ripe; few trees carry leaves, and there are usually dried and brownish. Fieldworks cease. The last bird the skylark leaves Poland for warmer countries. All nature in the middle of the month is usually prepared for the winter season. No flying insects can be seen; however, snowfalls and heavy frosts at the end of the month are not seldom to be seen. So, as you see, Polish autumn is truly beautiful and if you have a chance to visit during any of the fall months do it! 15.01.2022 Happy Poland Independence Day! We would like you to celebrate with us and we are giving away a free glass of wine for each guest with late lunch or dinner! Book your table now, walk ins welcome National Independence Day (Polish: Narodowe wito Niepodlegoci) is a national day in Poland celebrated on 11 November to commemorate the anniversary of the restoration of Poland's sovereignty as the Second Polish Republicin 1918, after 123 years of partition by the Russian Emp...ire, the Kingdom of Prussiaand the Habsburg Empire. It is a non-working day in Poland. The restoration of Poland's independence was gradual. The 11 November date chosen is the one on which Józef Pisudski assumed control of Poland. The holiday was constituted in 1937 and was celebrated only twice before World War II. After the war, the communist authorities of the People's Republic removed Independence Day from the calendar, though reclamation of independence continued to be celebrated informally on 11 November. The holiday was officially replaced by the National Day of Poland's Revival as Poland's National Day, celebrated on the 22 July anniversary of the communist PKWN Manifesto under Josef Stalin. As Poland emerged from Soviet-influenced communism in 1989, the original holidayon its original 11 November datewas restored. The date corresponds to the date of other countries' Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, or Veterans Day. All of these holidays and Polish Independence Day are indirectly related because they all emerged from the circumstances at the end of World War I. In other countries, holidays were established in the spirit of grief and horror at the enormous human cost of the war, and they mark the sacrifices of those who fought. For Poland, however, the tragedy of the war was tempered by what had been accomplished at its end: the restoration of a sovereign Polish state that had been lost entirely in the partitions of Poland, after 123 years of struggle. The Polish holiday is therefore simultaneously a celebration of the reemergence of a Polish state and a commemoration of those who fought for it. photos by NAC Narowowe Archiwum Cyfrowe FB https://www.facebook.com/narodowe.archiwum.cyfrowe/posts/10154243372999032 Photos via Kancelaria Prezesa Rady Ministrow, mojaszuflada.blog.pl, warszawa.naszemiasto.pl, air.photo.lublinu, agencja gazeta and unknown Photo: ukasz Sowinski, https://m.facebook.com/zsercaorawy/

14.01.2022 Fun Fact Wednesday: Day of the Divine Mother of Herbs 15 August The celebrations of the day of the Divine Mother of Herbs start with a church mass. People bring bouquets or wreaths (that detail varies from region to region) made of summer herbs and flowers as well as fresh crops to get them blessed in the church. In some regions the women are weaving in whole branches of fruit trees or berry shrubs, very often with the fruits still hanging from them. According to ethnographe...Continue reading

09.01.2022 Today's spotlight is on Iga Swiatek won the French Open. It was a great day fo Polish sport. Congratulations Iga! I don’t know what’s going on, so. I’m so happy. I’m so glad that my family is here finally. I don’t know, it’s so overwhelming for me. It’s crazy. Two years ago, I won junior Grand Slam and now I’m here. It feels like such a short time so I’m just overwhelmed but thank you all for cheering. It was an amazing final. Iga, an unseeded teenager from Poland, won her... first tour title at the French Open today with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Sofia Kenin, the reigning Australian Open champion and No. 4 seed at Roland Garros. Iga 19, the youngest woman to reach the French Open final since 18-year-old Kim Clijsters in 2001, became the first man or woman from Poland to win a Grand Slam singles title. She entered the tournament with a No. 54 world ranking, a recently acquired high-school diploma and a vague plan to test her game on the WTA Tour for what she described as a gap year before deciding whether she wanted to continue her education at a university. University, it appears, will have to wait https://www.facebook.com/swiatekiga Photos eurosport See more

08.01.2022 Fun Fact Thursday: Shepherding in the Tatra and other Polish mountains by Robert Szczachor https://fotokreator.myportfolio.com/ Grazing season, traditionally runs from April 23 (St. Wojciech day) to September 29 (St. Michael the Archangel day) Pastoral customs, traditions, techniques and equipment came to the Polish mountains from the south. They were strongly influenced by Vlachs - nomadic people coming from the Balkan area, who in the early Middle Ages began centuries long ...pilgrimage to the north. Nomads assimilatedwith the inhabitants of the Carpathian range and taught them new skills. Pastoral way of lifecame upon a breeding ground - difficult natural conditions (harsh climate and poor soil) favoured more animal husbandry than cereal farming. Shepherding started to develop in the Tatra and other Polish mountains. History of individualpastoral areas and its influence oncontemporary sheep grazing caused diversification of shepherding in different regions of Poland. Idyllic view with sheep in themountain pastures is not as common as it was in the past. Nevertheless we can still meetshepherds or even visit their huts while hikingon the mountain trails in Tatry, Gorce, Beskids or Pieniny. In the Tatra Mountains, where shepherding had been completely liquidated due to the nature conservation in the 70s, it was decided to restore grazing. Decisive influence had cultural issues- perennial relationship between the highlanders and the Tatras and richness of traditions and customs as its effect. In 1981, shepherding returned in a form of so-called Cultural grazing of sheep and cattle in the Tatra Mountains. What does it mean? Under agreements with the Tatra National Park highlanders can graze sheep on some of the clearings. They must, however, obeyseveral rules including speaking in a dialect, wearing the original highlander outfit, whether be assisted by traditional herding dogs the Polish Tatra sheepdogs. The are many more requirements, but thanks to them we can learn more about old customs and try productsprepared according to original recipes. 02.01.2022 Beautiful Poland: Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region/ Beskid Niski Another series of photos by Karol Nienartowicz See more photos (text in Polish) on http://www.karolnienartowicz.com/20-najpiekniejszych.../ 251 most valuable and highly interesting historic wooden buildings form the Wooden Architecture Route in Maopolska. Along the trail are picturesque Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic and Orthodox churches, tall bell-towers, Old Polish manor and detached houses , herita...ge parks, all of which are considered invaluable legacy of folk culture that stood the test of time. The Wooden Architecture Route came into existence in 2001 as a result of the efforts of Maopolska Region. As soon as the design phase of the route was completed and working partnerships established with neighboring regions information boards and wayfinding signs were put in place. In 2003 four wooden churches in Maopolska were entered onto the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. Among them are: the Parish Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Binarowa, the Parish Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Dbno Podhalaskie, St. Leonard’s Church in Lipnica Murowana and the Filial Church of St. Philip and St. Jacob in Skowa. Located at the eastern fringes of Central Europe within the Polish and Ukrainian Carpathian mountain range, the sixteen wooden tserkvas (churches) are outstanding examples of the once widespread Orthodox ecclesiastical timber-building tradition in the Slavic countries that survives to this day. The architectural forms of the tserkvas with tri-partite plans, pyramidal domes, cupolas and bell towers conform to the requirements of Eastern liturgy while reflecting the cultural traditions of the local communities that developed separately due to the mountainous terrain. They include Hutsul types in the Ukrainian south-eastern Carpathians at Nyzhniy Verbizh and Yasynia; Halych types in the northern Carpathians either side of the Polish/Ukrainian border at Rohatyn, Drohobych, Zhovkva, Potelych, Radru and Chotyniec; Boyko types either side of the Polish/Ukrainian border near the border with Slovakia at Smolnik, Uzhok and Matkiv, and western Lemko types in the Polish west Carpathians at Powronik, Brunary Wyne, Owczary, Kwiato and Turzask. Built using the horizontal log technique with complex corner jointing, and exhibiting exceptional carpentry skills and structural solutions, the tserkvas were raised on wooden sills placed on stone foundations, with wooden shingles covering roofs and walls. The tserkvas with their associated graveyards and sometimes free-standing bell towers are bounded by perimeter walls or fences and gates, surrounded by trees. 01.01.2022 Review left by Rocky Dean-Shoji starstarstarstarstar 5 weeks ago Alchemy is without a doubt one of the best eating experiences I’ve had in Sydney. Not only do they serve authentic and delicious Polish food, but the service and hospitality is second-to-none. The owner, Janusz, is hilarious and ties the whole experience together. We thoroughly enjoyed the Polish staples like Bigos (Hunter’s stew), Pierogi (Polish dumplings), Pork Knuckle and Sledzie (Herring in cream: exquisite...). My partner is Polish, and said that the Sledzie was exactly how her father used to make it in Poland. We dined as a group before the pandemic, and recently we ordered takeaway because we were craving Polish food! Janusz is so personable and caring, even called me to check that my order was correct; that kind of service is hard to come by. Do yourself a favour and order some food from Alchemy tonight.

01.01.2022 We were pretty busy hence why this weeks Fun Fact Tuesday is happening on Wednesday :) Todays spotlight- Zalipie Every Part of This Tiny Polish Village Is Covered in Lovely Floral Paintings A small village in southeast Poland is heralded for its unusual tradition. Every house, well, church, and barn is covered in lovely, decorative painted flowers. The secluded town of Zalipie, just 90 minutes from Krakow, feels a world away, as the small farming village bursts with color. ...Just how did the tradition start? Its not entirely clear, but one story relates that it began due to poor ventilation for stoves. As they would leak soot onto the ceiling, women began to paint flowers over the marks in order to tidy upand brighten uptheir homes. And even as ventilation improved, villagersmainly womencontinued to carry out the folk art, moving from ceilings to walls to bridges and everything in between. The tradition has continued to endure, and each spring following Corpus Cristi, villagers host the Painted Cottage competition, or Malowana Chata. Theres nothing like a little neighborly competition to get the creative juices flowing, with the contest taking place annually since 1948. The starting date of the Malowana Chata has special significance, as it began right after WWII ended. Poland was devastated during the war17% of the population diedand this was an attempt by officials to cover up some of the damage done to Zalipie. Now, Zalipie attracts visitors who come to soak in the colorful atmosphere. Theres even a museum, which was the three-bedroom cottage of a resident named Felicja Curyowa. When Curylowa passed in 1974, her ornate home was transformed into a space where visitors can appreciate her work. From spoons to lightbulbs, every square inch blooms with color. By J.
