25.01.2022 The wagtail or djitti djitti (noongar spelling) is a well known local Western Australian bird species. As is often seen with bird names, the English name concerns the appearance of the bird and the Noongar name is given for the sound the bird makes. WA Today tells us this: Known to the Noongar Aboriginal people as djitti djitti, because of its trademark chatter (the town of Chittering is named after the bird), the perky and active wagtail was said to be a gossip and was drive...n away from important tribal meetings. Children were told not to chase wagtails because they'd be led into the bush and lost forever. The Noongar also tell a charming story about how, in the Dreaming, the wagtail was a great hunter who was one day robbed of his catch by Wardong the crow and Dwerda the dingo. They say that the wagtail never forgot this crime, which is why it still angrily attacks crows and dogs much bigger than itself. Source: https://www.watoday.com.au//perths-willy-is-a-real-wag-201

20.01.2022 What bird is called both the farmer’s friend and the bin chicken? Before the 1950’s the Australian White Ibis was absent from Western Australia, but we are now very used to seeing them in parks, residential yards and of course - at the tip! Ibis’ have long bills for digging in wet sands to dine on crayfish and mussels. Their bills also come in handy for finding morsels in rubbish piles. Whilst the Ibis may not have the most pleasant habits, the pure white feathers and gracef...ul flight are worth admiring and their courtship ceremony is romantic. The male bows to the female, offers her a twig and once she accepts it they preen each other before building a nest together. Source: birdlife.org.au

20.01.2022 Spring is a great time to try something new! Here are a few ideas: - Find a free online history course - Listen to some beginner videos and learn a new language - Try cooking a different type of meal from another country - Wear something from your closet that you've been keeping for a special occasion like a bright scarf

19.01.2022 In another instalment of our Willagee history chronicles, a brilliant photograph of the Austrian homes we've mentioned previously is in the City of Melville Museum resources online. The listing details the image's historical significance; "A group of Austrian tradesmen immigrated to Australia in 1951 under a two year contract to build prefabricated housing for the Austrian company 'Thermobau'." If it is a little hard to make out here, be sure to look online - the call number is P2012.36 and the entire collection can be found at https://www.melvillecity.com.au//librari/library-catalogue

18.01.2022 With the winter rain, we are all a little more restricted in our outdoor movements. There are still ways you can enjoy the outdoors between showers. Here are a few of the small things we love doing when we only have dry patches outside: - Enjoy the smell of gum leaves on a warm road - something that always reminds us of our childhood - Look for rainbows after a rain shower - Count the seconds between lightning and thunder to guess how far away the storm is - Collect a few le...aves after the wind has blown them off the trees and try to draw or paint them - Take a photo of the same angle at the same time each day and watch the seasons change Our Alchera Living communities give residents access to the beautiful outdoors and incorporate nature.

17.01.2022 Our new lifestyle apartments at The Reserve give residents access to a complete gym and indoor pool. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is easy when the gym is in the village! But you don’t need your own gym to stay healthy. Plenty of exercise can be done using a dining chair or even the edge of the bed. If you're looking for ideas, there are plenty of simple home routines on YouTube. Alchera Living communities are healthy communities. https://thereserve.net.au/lifestyle/

17.01.2022 How do you connect with your family and friends? When moving into a new community, how do you find new connections with those around you? Here are some ways that we have found can work well: - Puzzles can be a great way to spend time with someone. Whether you prefer crosswords or sudoku, your neighbours are sure to share a passion for some sort of puzzle. - Music is an international language. Share your favourite tunes with your neighbours and friends and listen to theirs. Le...arn about why they love it and you may find yourself partial to a new genre. - Languages can be a lovely thing to share. Does a neighbour speak another language they can teach you a little of? Would you both like to order the same book and learn together? Have you found another way to meet new people in your community?

17.01.2022 Celebrate the wins along the way. If you walked for 5 minutes more, woke up 10 minutes earlier or felt better at the top of the stairs, give yourself a pat on the back!

14.01.2022 This month's historical image is a fantastic aerial view from 1966 of the Applecross Pine Plantation looking towards Fremantle Harbour. Of course, the plantation is long gone now but you can see on the right hand side of the photo, about three quarters of the way down, is the vacant land where our village now stands. The second image is a the same angle now. Souce: SLWA 260240PD. Aerial photograph looking west across the Applecross Pine Plantation to O'Connor with Willagee at right, 28 July 1966.

12.01.2022 Did you know The name Weeronga is an Aboriginal boys name meaning 'Quiet'. The name is perfectly suited to Alchera's Weeronga Village's serene location away from the noise, crowds and hustle & bustle of the city and main roads. Don't let the name and serene location trick you into thinking Weeronga Village is a quiet only zone. We have a great social scene with regular gatherings at our social centre! We've cultivated a warm and friendly community full of like-minded people who value companionship alongside peace and quiet.

10.01.2022 Retirement planning can be an exciting time. Australians are starting to think much earlier about the way they want to spend their retirement years. You'll find young couples in their late 20s and 30s often talking at a BBQ or restaurant about how they want to spend their twilight years. We've put together some examples of the ways our Alchera Living communities can work for some different types of retirement personalities. Today we meet THE PROFESSORS.... The Professors are the type of people who gather knowledge, books and will stop at nothing to find the answer to your question. The name of that town you were trying to remember last month? They'll own 3 books about it by the time you visit next. Professors love to hunt down new museums and bookstores as well as find unique blogs online. A professor needs spacious well designed living so that they can see all their books at all times. The well designed apartments of Alchera Living's The Reserve provide a high standard of homely comfort alongside low maintenance decor, fixtures and fittings. Are you a Professor? Do you know all the staff at your local bookstore by name? The Reserve Apartments can help you achieve the lifestyle you've been planning.

02.01.2022 Today we celebrate the Queen's Birthday! Before you go sending her your best wishes or organise a last minute present you should probably know that today is not her actual birthday. Queen Elizabeth II was born on the 21st of April 1926, but upon her father's request her birthday is celebrated every year on the second Saturday of June in the UK. In Australia most states celebrate the Queen's Birthday on the second Monday in June. However in WA the celebration date is chosen e...ach year by our State Governor and falls on a Monday between the last week of September and the first week of October. We hope that clears up any confusion. We wish you a lovely long weekend.

01.01.2022 We love indoor plants but golly some of us certainly do not have green thumbs! We turned to one of our favourite local nurseries - a business born and bred right here in Western Australia, Dawson's Garden World, to find out what types of indoor plants are the hardiest. Here's what they said: "The hardiest indoor plants are those which are able to grow in low or diffuse light situations. A rule of thumb is that dark green foliage is often a bit of an indicator for low light to...lerance". Some of the toughest indoor plants are Cast-iron plant, Spider plant, Dracaena, Ficus, Madonna Lily, Xanadu, Congo/Rojo Congo, China Doll, Mother In-Laws Tongue, Umbrella plant, Devil’s Ivy and ZZ plant. Remember not to overwater indoor plants during the winter and also make sure plants are not left sitting in saucers of water, both can lead to browning leaf tips, leaf drop or rotting." Whilst National Geographic tells us we would need 10 plants per square foot to make a noticeable change to the air quality indoors, we love that plants make a room feel fresher and more alive. 01.01.2022 Meet the Carnaby's cockatoo. Many of us have seen a flock of Carnaby's hanging about in large trees at some point. They love to crack open the nuts and seeds of banksia, eucalypts and pines. Did you know the Carnaby's black cockatoo is endangered? They are at risk due to their habitat being destroyed by land development, road expansion and agricultural use. Trees need to be at least 100 years old before the hollows are big enough for a Carnaby's couple to nest in. The Carnaby...'s cockatoo is one of the many native bird species you'll find in Alchera Living communities.
