24.01.2022 Alcocks Billiards in Art Series: Modernism and the Green Baize by Associate Professor Allison Morehead The Canadian art historian Allison Morehead provides a fascinating and in-depth analysis of representations of green baize in art. Many of the paintings she discusses in her essay have featured in Alcocks Billiards in Art Series https://www.facebook.com/pg/alcocksbilliards/photos/?tab=album&album_id=2193730197506204. The abstract of Modernism and the Green Baize reads: "All ...of the mundane, even offensive qualities of green baize, its resolute materiality, its potential toxicity, its decelerating and silencing effects on items of play, its easiness on players’ eyes, its associations with the bourgeois interior, and with forms of leisure such as billiards and gambling that were increasingly moralized and pathologized, turned up in Kandinsky’s full-throated rejection of green as bourgeois and cow-like". Allison Morehead is Associate Professor in the Department of Art History & Art Conservation at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada. Professor Morehead specializes in modern French, German, and Scandinavian art, visual, and material culture, emphasizing intersections with the psy-sciences and relays between modernism and the medicalization of life. https://nonsite.org/article/modernism-and-the-green-baize #alcocks #since1853 #billiards #billiardsinartseries #modernismandthegreenbaize #allisonmorehead #nonsitedotorg #melbourne #australia

22.01.2022 Billiard balls were at the centre of a famous breakthrough in forensic science, the first criminal trial in the United Kingdom which resulted in a conviction based on fingerprint evidence. In September 1902 Harry Jackson, aged 42, was convicted of a burglary at the house of Charles Driscoll Tustin, 156 Denmark Hill London, in which a set of billiard balls and other articles were stolen. Tustin's parlourmaid Rose Gilder, who discovered the burglary, observed a thumb mark on th...e sash of a billiard-room window that had been recently painted and brought it to the attention of the investigating police officer. He called in Detective Sergeant Charles Stockley Collins of the Metropolitan Police Fingerprint Bureau, who photographed the print. Comparison against the Bureau's files revealed a match with the fingerprints of Jackson, a known criminal. Prosecutor Richard David Muir, calling DS Collins as an expert witness, was able to convince the Old Bailey jury of the reliability of fingerprint evidence and Harry Jackson was found guilty and sentenced to seven years imprisonment. Today there is no need to nick billiard balls, they are available for online purchase at www.alcocks.com.au. #alcocks #since1853 #billiards #melbourne #australia #forensicscience #harryjackson #charlesdriscolltustin #denmarkhill #london #rosegilder #charlesstockleycollins #scotlandyard #fingerprintbureau #richarddavidmuir #oldbailey #fingerprintevidence

21.01.2022 BNZ Heritage, the museum of the Bank of New Zealand, has published these fascinating pictures of a beautiful copper engraved printing plate for "Alcock & Co Limited Billiard Table Builders" custom BNZ cheques. As can be seen on the plate, Alcocks were represented at the time in London, Sydney, Melbourne, Wellington, Auckland and Dunedin. Featured on the plate is a full size billiard table, most likely an Alcock & Co Exhibition Prize model which won gold medals at exhibitions around the world in the 19th century. #alcocks #since1853 #billards #snooker #exhibitionprize #melbourne #australia #bnzheritage

18.01.2022 Alcocks offers for sale a billiards marking board by E J Riley of Accrington, England. The board is very largely in original condition, with the E J Riley trading name still clearly visible on the head piece and the numbering system apparently unchanged from the time it was first made. An interesting feature is that the scoring numbers are protected by a glass front and are entirely detachable from the rear of the board for replacement in case of wear or damage but in the case of this board it has apparently not been necessary to make use of this sensible design feature. https://alcocks.com.au/tab/original-e-j-riley-marking-board #alcocks #since1853 #billiards #snooker #pool #ejriley #markingboard #melbourne #australia
