08.01.2022 Today on Aged Care Employee Day, I’d like to say thank you to the more than 360,000 people working in the sector across the country for the amazing job you do. ...Thank you for caring and thank you for everything you’re doing to try to keep some of our most vulnerable people and families safe during this global pandemic. The difficult situation the aged care sector has been facing, particularly in Victoria in recent weeks, due to COVID-19 is heartbreaking and we’re doing everything we can to help them keep Australians safe. #ThanksForCaring

06.01.2022 I was looking at old Pathe films for something completely different when I came across this interaction between Joe Lyons, George V, Queen Mary and the Duchess ...of York (later the Queen Mum). Pathe labels it Unused / unissued material - no paperwork - dates unclear or unknown. As far as I can tell it must have been taken when Joe was PM and in London with Enid for the king’s jubilee in 1935 (they also met Mussolini and the Roosevelts on the same trip). What surprised me was the interaction went on and on, much longer than with the other leaders of the dominions. I wondered, what does a school teacher from Stanley chat about with a king emperor? I turned to Enid for context and sure enough in her 1965 memoir, So We Take Comfort, she wrote about how well the Lyons’ got along with the royal family. They seem to have particularly hit it off with George who Enid says was much friendlier, jokier and down to earth than his public image. She says most of the talk was of things to see and do in London. Today, it’s remarkable enough when a Tasmanian strides the world stage. Back then, even more so. Enid recognised this when she called it a fairytale. Robert Menzies, who was on the same trip, was less romantic about it. He praised Joe Lyons’ amazing off-the-cuff speeches, but felt the Lyons were a little too eager to hob nob (not that he could talk). Here’s the film...https://youtu.be/i1v4VMCFiFo See more
