25.01.2022 Wallets and Purses can be put away as I have received enough donations and pledges to catch up with rent arrears and a couple of trolleys of food....the family ...is back in the house and are receiving close order support from our crew and support from our wider network to ensure they get to appointments and continue to engage with Open Arms and other appropriate agencies. The newly formed 'Womens' Shed' at Elizabeth led by a woman who has been an integral part of our RSL and XMRC youth programmes has offered 'girl time' support for digger's wife and her daughter.Other connections have been made which should assist with this most difficult case. I have received a bit of flak from some who told me to 'give up' as they read from a very short story and made an assessment from a small bunch of facts but that's OK as they have not had the good fortune to have rescued as many from the bottle, the needle, the rope or the hosepipe as we have over the years. The established organisations that have closed the door on these people I understand as well as no one should be forced to put up with anger, abuse and profanties from people they tried to assist but I do wonder why we in Veteran's welfare are prepared to face the enemy with his green tracer , punji pits, booby traps. mortars et al and yet run from an out of control unarmed angryman. I have made facebook appeals in the past in the small number of groups to which I belong and each time have achieved the mission. One was the digger's dog who required urgent cancer treatment at a cost of more than a thousand dollars when the digger was in the repat getting his hat size changed and you good folk sent us the $'s to pay for the successful operation which in turn saved the digger from his suicidal thoughts when contemplating having Daisy put down. At Eastertime last year you helped me get the digger we are helping now out of the rain and into housing and again at Christmas time when their cupboards were bare and Christmas wasn't looking so jolly. Again you have rallied as diggers do. (read 'digger' to mean : male/female/ other choices Navy, Army, Air Force) In conclusion ; These people might beat their demons when the lad's brain realises how many have engaged to help not just with money but with the hundreds of thumbs up for those taking up the fight, sad face emoji's at their situation and the stream of posts , pm's, emails offering my crew encouragement. The cliche's, maxims and aphorisms contained in some of the responses probably could do with a second look; examples being 'You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink' OK but leave the thirsty old bloke alone and he'll eventually find his way back to the trough and the old favourite 'Once a Junkie always a Junkie' that's crap and I'm living proof of that thanks to a Vietnam Vet and his gang of 'Rats of Tobruk' from the Aldgate RSL who never gave up and a beautiful woman who knew how to stand by her man.(and his bike). p.s. if you think my little RSL is worth supporting you may be able to help in other ways it would be great if some were able to help with rates and taxes at our bush camps, join in to raise funds for bore equipment to get water into our dam to protect from the fire that nearly got us two years ago, pay for the rego for our wheelchair bus or the twenty three seater or maybe help with the dreaded insurance money......you would be investing in the machinery that has helped save lives , turned lives around, improved the health of many and given broken people their self worth back........you can get hold of me in many ways..... pm to get email , phone (won't answer when riding or driving) or post office or if you see me on the street pat your head and place two fingers of your left hand on your right bicep and I'll come to you........ unless you're a southpaw and have your rifle in your hand. I might mention I was a drilly for a while so you can hate me now so I don't have to wait until later. ....out.. patch

24.01.2022 Aldgate RSL is in mourning again with the recent passing of two of our own. I am truly saddened at the death of our member and good mate Andrew (the Russian) Uz...elin an often troubled man who had finally won his fight with the DVA and was planning a healthier future without his demons. Many of us in the club travelled with Andrew on his often dangerous journey through life and we were so pleased that this year he had finally conquered some of the ghosts of his past.. We also will miss and remember Mr Philip Winter our admin lawyer who has served us well for more than a quarter century who took a leap of faith with a handful of grunts and became one of the first directors in the establishment of our bush camps at Mootatunga and Karte. After finalising the land deal with the conversion of crown land to freehold which was started by our first lawyer Mr Noel Jugovac Phil went on to assist in the legal minefields we encountered over the years and steered us through incorporation of our club and the establishment of the Ex Military Rehab Centre and more recently our fight with the Defence bureaucracies over leasing arrangements. He also provided pro bono legal assistance to many of our members in many areas including making of wills, guardianship orders, fights with creditors, land contracts, civil legal matters and some criminal court cases It should be noted that all the years I worked with Phil he never sent us a bill.. Philip ran the Australasian law chambers but his role as a Solicitor and Barrister was augmented by his other roles in life as a Magistrate and Coroner. Phil was also a Navy man who served with the Fleet Air Arm. We will remember both men on sunday at our family BBQ and will post funeral details for Andrew when they come to hand. Vale Andrew Uzelin and Philip Winter

20.01.2022 RSL State President advises that the 2020 Adelaide ANZAC Day Commemorations and activities are cancelled due to government directives regarding COVID-19 health concerns.

19.01.2022 The Aldgate RSL sub branch is unable to conduct Dawn Service on ANZAC day due to not being Covid compliant due to the incomplete renovations after damage from a... tree falling on the clubrooms and recent flooding of the facility......A Covid Marshal will be in attendance from dawn to ensure the safety of visitors wishing to lay a wreath or to spend a moment at the memorial to remember the fallen. The sub branch is hoping to recommence activities in the near future but the inability to trade for more than a year and the increase in request for welfare assistance during the Covid crisis has left our purse somewhat depleted. If the reader would like to assist Aldgate RSL to get back on it's feet your donation can be sent to our building account details below. Westpac BSB 735 080 Account number 070 064 See more

16.01.2022 The ex digger and wife who were homeless earlier in the year and assisted with finance by folk from this site and Aldgate RSL are now in housing, attending to d...ebts and arrears and with assistance from XMRC advocate have DVA claims accepted and will be receiving compensation from Govt in the new year. They are however broke and have no food for themselves and dogs for this Festive season. Where I live in the Adelaide Hills our welfare agencies have been stretched to the limit due to the bushfires and over eighty families have lost their homes and are receiving help. My Aldgate RSL welfare fund is completely empty and I am hoping that some from the military family might be able to help with some funding to get them into the new year.. Bank details are below.. On behalf of Aldgate RSL and the Ex Military Rehabilitation Centre I would like to thank all those on this site who have assisted the many struggling with life after service. 07.01.2022 Another broken column... In my mind I have a cemetery where i keep my military mates who have passed. The broken column represents a life taken early and sad...ly I have to make room for another. Pat Bowman an RAAF sergeant who gave nearly three decades of his life to serve his country died early on monday at home.Pat and his wife Jo have given many years of service to XMRC and Aldgate RSL as the backbone of administration and catering way above the call of duty.Pat was a board member of XMRC and Peter Badcoe VC Complex and held position of treasurer but had many other hats as driver of our buses picking up volunteers, work for dole clients and 'Helping Hand' older mates. He and Jo organised supplies for our catering needs, cooked regularly for forty to fifty people and then at end of day dixie bashing, floors, then the dunnies (many of our oldies are not good shots so it wasn't a sought after job.) Pat could be seen with the sun rising loading the bus and trailer with Pete our chairman and the crew heading off for another Bunnings bbq day and returning with sun going down for the cleanup back at our base. Many hours I have spent with Pat going through the never ending and constantly changing paper warfare of grant applications, ACNC reporting, Leases, WHS accreditation and the myriad of red tape conflicts with the system. He was a great comfort to the damaged young vets that stumble across our hearth and he and Jo would feed them up help organise and source basics if they were homeless and help pick them up again if they fell.I will miss the missions with him and Pete going to relocate an evicted digger and seeing his head at the other end of the cupboard going into the trailer or dodging him swinging the sledge hammer when we're doing a demolition or the mentoring session with a wayward young digger we are transporting to or from the courthouse and will miss the conversations between two grunts (one nasho one reg) and a RAAF snake (military folk will understand).... They say no-one is indispensable but Pat Bowman was another exception that proves the rule..........Pat's funeral will be next Friday at Enfield Cemetery the funeral directors will confirm time of service and name of chapel next tuesday...I will post detail then... 04.01.2022 I sadly have to report another broken column in our ranks of Vietnam Veterans. Steve left us under tragic circumstances and as one of our originals with our pro...jects and resident caretaker at our bush camp he will be sorely missed. Steve and his family lived at the bush camp for quite some time before moving to Paruna. Details are below for a memorial service (permission has been given for folk attending to camp overnight at the oval) Be aware this may change depending on Covid virus situation. NORTON, Stephen James Passed away at home on 16 October 2020. Aged 69. Dearly loved husband of Jill. Loving father of Ray, Adrian (deceased), Joanne and Kathleen. Loved Grandpa and Great Grandpa. Forever loved and remembered. Family and friends are advised that a Memorial Service will be held at the Brown's Well football oval on Saturday 12 December 2020 at 12 noon.

02.01.2022 A major fire in our factory building at Edinburgh has disrupted some of the regular services and projects at the centre. A fire has destroyed the Joinery shop w...hich is approx one sixth of the building and has caused further damage to the offices in the admin area and minimal damage to day rooms, dining and kitchen areas. The initial building inspection revealed possible structural damage which would require walls to be braced and as a consequence the facility was fenced off until safety requirements are met. An update received yesterday (15/12/20) from Defence Estates confirmed that no activity will take place until the building is made safe so that their insurers can do an assessment. The insurers are also waiting for the Fire investigation report. When the building is made safe the debris will need to be cleared after which engineers reports can be submitted and Defence and XMRC insurers can complete their assessments. Fortunately some years ago we had two unused buildings adjacent to our compound put on our lease with a future plan to set up an integration centre for younger Veterans. Defence Estates have agreed to allow access to them and have removed the fence and have had Electricians begin safety checks and maintenance and have their builders doing an update report and asbestos check. One building is a series of offices and lecture rooms the other will be converted to a workshop as a temporary measure. We should be able to get back to core business early in the new year. Welfare, health referrals and assistance for Veterans in the Justice system have not been compromised by the fire in the factory.

02.01.2022 RIP. Lest We Forget.

01.01.2022 We are saddened at the passing of Dennis (Hoss) Burge an engineer who saw service in Vietnam. Hoss was a board member of the XMRC prior to the establishment of ...the Vietnam Vets sub branch at Edinburgh. Hoss put his heart and soul into the projects and will be missed. A service will be conducted at the Peter Badcoe VC Complex this sunday 17th November at 1100hrs sharp in the memorial garden with a meet and greet after the service......those unable to attend are welcome to come to Aldgate RSL to our family BBQ day on sunday 1st of December where we will remember Hoss on that day.
