Very windy for southern SA Saturday afternoon. A strong front will enter the west of SA this evening then move across western and central SA overnight and Saturday morning, then into the northeast Saturday afternoon. The front will bring with it a band of gusty showers and thunderstorms, mostly during the morning, followed by strong damaging westerly winds in the afternoon. Gusty northeast to northwest winds will turn strong westerly following the front on Saturday and become damaging, averaging 50-70 km/h with gusts of 80-100 km/h at times across the warning area during the afternoon. The strongest winds are likely to occur about the ranges. Localised gusty winds may also occur near showers and thunderstorms during the morning, with a slight risk of damaging wind gusts. Locations which may be affected include Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Mount Gambier, Maitland, Murray Bridge, Kingscote, Naracoorte, Meningie and Bordertown. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move vehicles under cover or away from trees; * Secure or put away loose items around your property. * Stay indoors, away from windows, while conditions are severe. http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDS21037.shtml

23.01.2022 Thanks to SA Power Networks who share this advice before any storms. These are also critical components of your Bushfire Survival kit. Are you prepared?

22.01.2022 Aldgate Cricket Club might be pleased to hear our crews who have been blacking out and patrolling the Yumali fire overnight report that the Thermal Imaging camera was put to good use. A Thermal Imaging Camera allows crews to find hot spots of bushfires and apply water methodically and purposefully. This has prevented the wastage of thousands of litres of water and hours of valuable volunteer time. Thank you for your support. (archive picture courtesy: The Guardian)

19.01.2022 Something for the calendar in January. Workshop to be held in Mylor.

19.01.2022 TOTAL FIRE BANS have been declared for 28 November 2020 in the following Fire Ban Districts: Northwest Pastoral - Severe Northeast Pastoral - Severe Eastern Eyr...e Peninsula - Severe Flinders - Extreme Mid North - Extreme Mount Lofty Ranges - Severe Yorke Peninsula - Severe Riverland - Severe Murraylands - Severe Where Total Fire Bans have been declared, very hazardous fire weather conditions are predicted. The Total Fire Ban will apply for 24 hours from midnight tonight to midnight tomorrow. The CFS recommends that you implement your Bushfire Survival Plan. FIRE DANGER RATING Where fire ban districts have a forecast fire danger rating of Extreme, only well prepared, well constructed and actively defended houses are likely to offer safety during a fire. Where fire ban districts have a forecast fire danger rating of Severe, well prepared and actively defended houses can offer safety during a fire. COVID-19 ADVICE If you are quarantining or isolating in an area of fire risk, you can leave that location if you are in an emergency or if your home is unsafe - but try to get back as soon as you safely can. If you need to attend a relief centre or a Bushfire Last Resort Refuge, you need to stay outside, alert emergency services at the location and follow their instructions. Advise emergency services that you have left quarantine or isolation due to COVID-19. Please ensure your emergency kits are updated to include masks, sanitiser, and any other items you may need to keep yourself safe and prevent any potential spread of COVID-19. BUSHFIRE PLAN If you don't have a plan to ensure your survival, leaving early before a fire starts is your safest option. In making your plan, you should be aware that in high fire danger conditions, essential services including mains-fed electricity and water supply may not be available due to the prevailing weather conditions. Landowners are asked to adhere to local harvest codes of practice which are available from your local council. Landowners are also asked to ensure that any burn-off activities conducted today are fully extinguished before midnight tonight. Agencies are advised to activate their Total Fire Ban procedures in preparation for these predicted fire weather conditions. For further information contact the Bushfire Information Hotline on 1800 362 361 or visit https://www.cfs.sa.gov.au

17.01.2022 Drive carefully through the Hills, you never know what is around the next bend. This image from Aldgate Valley Road last year shows the damage possible from fallen trees. Power lines must be avoided by at least 10 metres if they are on the ground. Stay clear and call SES 132500.

17.01.2022 A TOTAL FIRE BAN applies from midnight to midnight, the Fire Danger Rating is EXTREME. Check the CFS website http://www.cfs.sa.gov.au/firebans for details

17.01.2022 If you are in self-quarantine or self-isolation due to COVID-19, you can leave your home if you are in an emergency or your home is unsafe. You should try to ge...t back into self-isolation as soon as you safely can. During an emergency, if you need to attend an emergency relief centre or a Bushfire Last Resort Refuge, you need to stay outside, alert emergency services (e.g. SAPOL, relief authorities at the location etc.) and follow instructions. You must also advise emergency services that you have been forced to leave self-quarantine or self-isolation due to the emergency and that: you are a close contact of a known COVID-19 case you have recently tested positive to COVID-19 or if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or you are in self-quarantine because you have recently returned from interstate. Review your Bushfire Survival Plan and consider adding additional face masks, hand sanitiser, and antibacterial wipes to your ‘Emergency Kit’ to protect yourself and your loved ones from COVID-19. Follow the SA Country Fire Service for emergency warnings and further advice.

13.01.2022 It's still Fire Danger Season in most of SA, so if you're thinking of having a backyard campfire or bonfire for warmth/comfort at home over the long weekend the...re are things that you need to consider. You can have one, providing: - the fire is in a 30cm deep trench and no more than one square metre in area - you have a 4 metre cleared space around and above the fire - a responsible person is in attendance at all times with water/an appropriate extinguisher. Please note that only charcoal is allowed to be burnt for comfort fires within a metropolitan area or within township boundaries by the EPA Legislation. Check with your local council before lighting a comfort fire. The use of above ground fires such as chimineas, fire drums, braziers are only permitted with the use of permits. #StopTheSpread #StaySafe #StayHome

12.01.2022 SA Country Fire Service has issued a Total Fire Ban for the Mount Lofty Ranges on Wednesday, April 15. CFS State Duty Commander Brett Loughlin said it is a hig...hly dynamic time in South Australia with the COVID-19 pandemic, however the public should be reassured CFS crews are ready to respond to any emergency. People living in the Mount Lofty Ranges need to review their Bushfire Survival Plans with current directions in mind. We have been in talks today with SA Police and SA Health about how people should respond if a bushfire starts near them, Mr Loughlin said. If you have been directed to self-isolate and there is a bushfire emergency near you, you are allowed to leave your property to travel to your closest Bushfire Safer Place available on the website. ONLY LEAVE IF IT IS SAFE TO DO SO. You must not congregate with others at that Bushfire Safer Place. IF IT IS NOT SAFE TO LEAVE solid buildings provide protection from bushfire. If people are found to leave their property without a valid reason, they will be investigated by police. For more information about bushfires, call the Bushfire Information Line on 1800 362 361. For information about COVID-19 and bushfires, call the COVID-19 Information line on 1800 253 787.

11.01.2022 As Hills fire-fighters we often park up our vehicles and run out many lengths of hose to stop an advancing fire. As part of a response across the state we may need to chase a crop fire on flatter ground. Last night we introduced newer members and drivers to "Chase the rabbit", formally known as a "Pump and roll". Our crew have to aim at the plastic drum towed behind a vehicle and practice effective extinguishing techniques. A great challenge to do while moving at 20 kph. You can see one officer instructing on the rear and other drivers receiving instruction in the cabin.

11.01.2022 Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING, LOCALLY DESTRUCTIVE WINDS for people in Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Easter...n Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North, Kangaroo Island, Riverland, Murraylands and parts of Upper South East, Lower South East, North West Pastoral and North East Pastoral districts. A vigorous front associated with a complex low pressure system will sweep across the State this evening and early Wednesday morning. The front will first impact western coasts from late this afternoon then move eastwards to reach central parts including Adelaide around midnight. Damaging wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h are likely with squally showers and thunderstorms for a period ahead of and following the front as it moves across the warning area. In addition, localised destructive wind gusts in excess of 120 km/h are a risk with stronger showers and thunderstorms, mainly about western facing coastal areas with and just ahead of the front. Damaging winds averaging 50-70 km/h at times are also possible away from shower activity. The threat of severe winds will move eastwards and ease later Wednesday morning. A cold, fresh to strong west to southwesterly airstream with scattered showers will persist. For the Adelaide area, the main risk period of severe winds will exist from around 9 pm tonight, through to around 3 am Wednesday morning. Locations which may be affected include Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Ceduna, Maitland, Murray Bridge and Kingscote. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move vehicles under cover or away from trees; * Secure or put away loose items around your property. * Keep clear of fallen power lines; * Stay indoors, away from windows, while conditions are severe. http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDS21037.shtml

01.01.2022 Key messaging for bushfire safety in SA given COVID restrictions From midnight tonight, a six-day initial stage of ‘circuit breaker’ restrictions will be implem...ented to protect the South Australian community from the spread of COVID-19. These restrictions may affect how you follow CFS bushfire safety advice. Review your Bushfire Survival Plan using the up-to-date advice on the SA Health website www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/COVID-19 UNDER LOCKDOWN During this initial restriction period, you can only leave your home for limited reasons. This includes during a bushfire emergency or if your home is unsafe. Some relocation destinations in Bushfire Safer Places will not be available due to these COVID-19 restrictions. - Cinemas and other public venues will be closed. - Visits to shopping centres are for essential food shopping only If you plan to stay with relatives or friends when you relocate to a Bushfire Safer Place, consider alternative arrangements if your plan is to stay with elderly relatives or immuno-compromised relatives or friends. This will reduce the risk of exposing vulnerable people to COVID-19. If you are in self-quarantine or self-isolation due to COVID-19, you can leave your home if you are in an emergency or your home is unsafe but try to get back into self-isolation as soon as you safely can. During an emergency, if you need to attend an emergency relief centre or a Bushfire Last Resort Refuge, you need to stay outside, alert emergency services (e.g. SAPOL, relief authorities at the location etc) and follow instructions. You must ensure you advise emergency services that you have been forced to leave self-quarantine or self-isolation due to the emergency and that: - you are a close contact of a known COVID-19 case - you have recently tested positive to COVID-19 or if - you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or - you are in self-quarantine because you have recently returned from interstate. UNDER RESTRICTIONS State government restrictions are in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This may affect how you follow CFS bushfire safety advice. Leaving early during COVID-19 will be a little different this summer. While COVID-19 restrictions are in place, you can leave your home during an emergency or if your home is unsafe. Consider the following in your leave early plan to protect yourself and your loved ones from COVID-19: During COVID-19 restrictions you may travel if you are doing so as part of your bushfire plan. If you are unwell or have symptoms, isolate yourself from others and ensure you always wear a face covering and get tested as soon as possible. Add to your 'Emergency Kit' - Additional face masks - Hand sanitiser - more than 60% alcohol - Antibacterial wipes Follow SA Health COVID-19 advice - Wear a face mask - Practise good hygiene. Wash or sanitise your hands when you enter someone else’s home, if possible - Do not shake hands, hug or kiss as a greeting - Maintain physical distancing, keep at least 1.5 metres away from others
