24.01.2022 In May, selected junior students from years 7 to 9, and students studying geography from years 10 to 12 from Aldridge, competed in the National Geography Competition. The Australian Geography Competition is a contest for Australian secondary school students, assessing their geographical knowledge and skills. The Competition aims to encourage student interest in geography and to reward student excellence. Over 73,000 students from 780 schools entered in 2019. Each year Austral...ia, through the initiative of the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland and the Australian Geography Teachers’ Association, sends a team to the International Geography Olympiad. It is an opportunity for students to engage with people studying geography from different cultures, hear from and engage with a range of experts studying and working in the field and highlights how geography is applied to study and employment around the world. There is also the opportunity for students to explore the host country. Australia’s teams to the annual International Geography Olympiad are selected from the top male and female students in Year 11 (aged between 15 and 18 years old) in each State and the combined Territories. Flights, accommodation, and meals for participants at the International Geography Olympiad are met by the Competition. The school congratulates Jackson for excelling in the May competition and subsequently for being shortlisted for selection in the Australian team which will travel to Istanbul in 2021 (COVID permitting). Jackson will now sit through further selection processes which involves a three hour written examination and an interview. Should he be successful in the final stages of the selection process, Jackson will represent Australian students in an international competition against the best in the rest of world. Well done Jackson!!! #successthrougheffort #engagedstudents

24.01.2022 Aldridge history fact for the day Let’s hope that in a few years the coronavirus is also in a history fact as being completely eradicated by worldwide vaccinations On this day 1979 The eradication of the smallpox virus is certified, making smallpox the first of only two diseases that have been driven to extinction (rinderpest in 2011 being the other).... Smallpox was an infectious disease caused by one of two virus variants, Variola major and Variola minor. The last naturally occurring case was diagnosed in October 1977, and the World Health Organization (WHO) certified the global eradication of the disease in 1980.The risk of death after contracting the disease was about 30%, with higher rates among babies. Often those who survived had extensive scarring of their skin, and some were left blind #OnThisDay #historyfacts #engagedstudents

23.01.2022 This term, the Year 8 Scholars have been exploring an integrated English/humanities and sustainability unit around the novel, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, which is based on the true story of Sudanese man Savla Dut’s life. This novel addresses Sustainable Development Goal 6, which is access to clean water and sanitation. Students learnt that in Sudan, many people, in both past and present times, do not have access to clean water and sanitation, which, in turn, ...greatly impacts upon their quality of life, access to education and personal health. Students explored the roles that water, hope, perseverance and overcoming adversity played in the lives of the main characters in the novel and the ways in which Salva Dut actually made a difference in Sudan by establishing the ‘Water for South Sudan’ project, whereby water wells, sanitation and education programs have been built, improved and maintained in multiple villages. This week our amazing Aldridge students presented their independent research projects, given only two weeks ago, to their peers and Aldridge staff. They explored topics as guinea worms, waterborne diseases, animals of Sudan (many endangered) and the Nile River. Students presented using posters, brochures, student-made videos, PowerPoint Presentations and verbal discussions. Most impressive of all was the students’ commitment and work ethic, as most of their research was done for homework, with students becoming ‘experts’ in their field of research. #aldridgescholars #successthrougheffort

21.01.2022 Aldridge History fact for the day At the moment the world is waiting for the vaccine to renormalise our lives. This is a process that has repeated itself many times in history as humanity has searched for solutions often to problems we have created ourselves. On this day 1922 Leonard Thompson becomes the first person to be injected with insulin.... At the age of 14 Leonard Thompson was rapidly losing weight and dying. After initial setbacks the purified insulin injections were successful and he began to recover surviving to the age of 27. This case led to the treatment and survival of millions of diabetes patients around the world. The creator of Insulin, Dr Frederick Banting, sold the rights to the University of Toronto for $1 so that everyone could get access to the treatment. #OnThisDay #historyfacts #engagedstudents

21.01.2022 2020 GRADUATE LIVING OUT HER DREAM Last year, Aldridge Year 12 student Simran Prasad, had the final opportunity to enter the annual student design competition, Wool4School. This provided her with a chance to change the course of her life after placing first in ‘The Aspiring Category Winner’ out of all school entries in Australia. Simran’s winning entry was inspired by the Diphylleia Grayi (Skeleton Flower) that is found blooming mid-spring in East Asia. Simran said, This... unique bloom seems ordinary until it rains; when its petals turn transparent like glass. I chose this flower for its enchanted properties as well as a tribute for the Korean singer-songwriter, Kim Jong Hyun, who had written a song about this flower as a metaphor of life’s struggles. Simran’s fantastic win gained her a scholarship degree in fashion design with the Whitehouse Institute of Design, where she officially started studying this week. Her design was made by Australian fashion designer, Jonathan Ward and was featured in an Australian fashion publication. Unfortunately due to COVID, together with stock and transport issues, her design was unable to be made from the fabrics she had originally selected. As a result, the Johnathon Ward version of her design has lost some of its fragility and only the shirt, pants and scarf were made but at $12 000, not many young designers have such an accomplishment on their resume. In early February she attended her first fashion shoot which she absolutely loved and came away from the experience with a list of contacts for hair, make up, models and photographers. We look forward to following Simran’s journey as she continues to pursue her passion in life. You can find the full published article written in Australian Fashion Journal by following this link: https://fashionjournal.com.au//2020-wool4school-competiti/

The students explored the rich vocabulary and themes within the novel, as well as aspects of Korean culture, traditions, food, housing and religion. In art lessons, they created their very own Korean inspired vase or cup to keep as a memory of their time here at Aldridge. All students have been fantastic role-models for their primary schools and a pleasure to teach as a part of our Primary Scholars Program. 15.01.2022 Aldridge history fact for the day A time when the King of England was in constant dispute with his own Lords and Barons, was the perfect time for Robert the Bruce and the Scots to strike On this day 1322 Robert the Bruce of Scotland defeats King Edward II of England at the Battle of Old Byland, forcing Edward to accept Scotland's independence.... Bruce crossed the Solway in the west, making his way in a south-easterly direction towards Yorkshire, bringing many troops recruited in Argyll and the Isles. The boldness and speed of the attack, known as the The Great Raid of 1322, soon exposed Edward to the dangers on his own land. On his return from Scotland, the king had taken up residence at Rievaulx Abbey with Queen Isabella. His peace was interrupted when the Scots made a sudden and unexpected approach in mid-October.[1] All that stood between them and a royal prize was a large English force under the command of John of Brittany, Earl of Richmond. John had taken up position on Scawton Moor, between Rievaulx and Byland Abbey. To dislodge him from his strong position on the high ground Bruce used the same tactics that brought victory at the earlier Battle of Pass of Brander. As Moray and Douglas charged uphill a party of Highlanders scaled the cliffs on the English flank and charged downhill into Richmond's rear. Resistance crumbled and the Battle of Old Byland turned into a rout. Richmond himself was taken prisoner, as were Henri de Sully, Grand Butler of France, Sir Ralph Cobham ('the best knight in England') and Sir Thomas Ughtred. Many others were killed in flight. Edward 'ever chicken hearted and luckless in war' was forced to make a rapid and undignified exit from Rievaulx, fleeing in such haste that his personal belongings were left behind. After Byland, says Sir Thomas Gray, the Scots were so fierce and their chiefs so daring, and the English so cowed, that it was no otherwise between them than as a hare before greyhounds. #historyfacts #onthisday #engagedstudents

13.01.2022 Aldridge history fact for the day The youth of our nation travelled across the world excited for adventure and a short war. They did not realise what they were entering. The smiles and cheers of 1914 were replaced with the horror and sadness of Gallipoli and the western front. On this day 1914 World War I: The Australian Imperial Force (AIF) departed by ship in a single convoy from Albany, Western Australia bound for Egypt.... #OnThisDay #historyfacts #engagedstudents

11.01.2022 Aldridge history fact for the day What had become a play toy for rich Americans and in the control of casino owning Mafia families, Cuba was now liberated and placed in communist control by Fidel Castro. It has certainly been an island of conflict and change, wealth and poverty, corruption and greed. Being so close to the United States has put it in an unhappy strategic position for what is a beautiful historically cultural island. I love the music of Cuba... On this day 1956 The Granma reaches the shores of Cuba's Oriente Province. Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and 80 other members of the 26th of July Movement disembark to initiate the Cuban Revolution. #OnThisDay #historyfacts #engagedstudents

06.01.2022 Aldridge history fact for the day On this day 1931 Guy Menzies flies the first solo non-stop trans-Tasman flight (from Australia to New Zealand) in 11 hours and 45 minutes, crash-landing on New Zealand's west coast. 11 hours and 45 minutes seems like an incredible amount of time to get to NZ by plane and the crash landing doesn’t sound pleasant. I guess at least he was allowed to fly to New Zealand.... He was very well dressed for the occasion with a very nice tie. #OnThisDay #historyfacts #engagedstudents

06.01.2022 Aldridge history fact for the day If only walls could talk. There have certainly been some world changing discussions, arguments and decisions made in this building over the last 228 years.... On this day 1792 In Washington, D.C., the cornerstone of the United States Executive Mansion (known as the White House since 1818) is laid The residence was designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban in the neoclassical style. Hoban modelled the building on Leinster House in Dublin, a building which today houses the Oireachtas, the Irish legislature. Construction took place between 1792 and 1800 using Aquia Creek sandstone painted white. When Thomas Jefferson moved into the house in 1801 and added low colonnades on each wing that concealed stables and storage. In 1814, during the War of 1812, the mansion was set ablaze by the British Army in the Burning of Washington, destroying the interior and charring much of the exterior. Reconstruction began almost immediately, and President James Monroe moved into the partially reconstructed Executive Residence in October 1817. Exterior construction continued with the addition of the semi-circular South portico in 1824 and the North portico in 1829. #historyfacts #onthisday #engagedstudents

04.01.2022 Aldridge History fact for the day This is soccer week after the death of Maradona so sticking to the theme it would have been amazing to be sitting in the stands when Scotland played its first soccer game against England. Talk about sport replacing war. Not sure I would have liked to play in this game. I’m sure the arrangements for tackling the opposition player involved taking them out in whatever manner you deemed fit.... What is your favourite sport? 1872 The first-ever international football match takes place at Hamilton Crescent, Glasgow, between Scotland and England Unofficial games had been played before this one however this was the first sanctioned game. Played at The Oval in England It ended in a nil all draw to the disgust of 4000 English fans. I love the old entry ticket! #engagedstudents #historyfacts #OnThisDay
