12.01.2022 The best phonics ‘program’ is your school library (David Hornsby). Explicit, systematic, and rigorous phonics instruction happens when you plan well, using rich authentic texts that engage the individual students you teach (in your class). [Griffith University, Gold Coast campus]

09.01.2022 We posted the link to this report a little while ago, but its worth a repeat! Enjoy! https://literacyworldwide.org//ila-children-experiencing-r If you dont... like the term balanced you can think...comprehensive, which is becoming common now. See... Second, effective reading instruction is comprehensive. It addresses all the dimensions of reading and is responsive to the strengths and needs of individual students, which include intentional instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics. However, a comprehensive instructional approach also involves oral language development, writing and spelling, and a focus on comprehensionall of which are necessary to support and assist students in becoming independent readers. Despite a widely held belief that a narrow focus on word reading is a necessary starting point, the evidence indicates otherwise. Instruction that focuses on word reading alone contributes to the knowledge gap that is now known to be at the root of later reading difficulties. (p. 4) See more
