17.01.2022 A great loss to the field of literacy education. ALEA would like to acknowledge the contributions of the late Frank Smith whose ground breaking work supported e...ducators to teach reading. ‘Reading Without Nonsense’ remains one of the most authoritative, influential, informative and accessible text on reading and learning to read. (Booktopia) Here are some personal remembrances of Frank Smith from our ALEA elders and associates who remember Frank with fondness and the utmost respect. Brian Cambourne How sad he’s gone. What a giant he was in our field. Like Ken Goodman, Frank changed how we thought and taught literacy in Australia. I was very fortunate that my Dean of Education at Riverina College (Dr Peter Rousch) found the funds to entice Frank to accept a 6 month contract as a Visiting Fellow at our college back in the mid 70’s. The lectures and sessions he gave during those months were ground breaking for me personally and for Australian literacy education in general. Jan Turbill What a giant thinker, writer and character. Such a legacy he’s left us. Only last week I culled (again) my professional books but couldn’t throw out any of my Frank Smith books. Each had been such an influence on my work and us all. Reading like a writer in Language Arts 1983 journal was the greatest influence in my work. Andrea Butler and I published ‘Towards a Reading Writing Classroom’ in 1984 based on classroom practice strongly underpinned by that one article. It still guides my volunteer work in Berry School where we run Story Club. Anne McNamara His work was illuminating and had a profound influence on the understanding of the reading process. Wendy Bean I was lucky enough to be a summer school during the time Frank was with Brian Cambourne as a Visiting Fellow. I think I was first in the auditorium every morning hanging on every word. So long ago but that learning was critical to all that was to come. I was grateful then as I am now for such an opportunity. Robyn Ewing I never met Frank Smith but his book ‘Understanding Reading’ was one of our main texts on reading in the mid 70’s when I was at uni and it was such an important influence on my teaching as was so much of his writing over the years. Diane Snowball When Frank was in Australia to speak at the ARA (now ALEA) conference in Canberra some of us were very lucky to spend additional time with him at a small group seminar and he also spent a day with those of us who worked at the Footscray Demonstration Unit in Melbourne. We were extremely fortunate to learn from such a great thinker who shared his knowledge so clearly and strongly. At past ALEA conferences the major speakers were recorded and I have been wondering if those recordings are still available. Frank also wrote notes on small cards that he used for major presentations and I wonder if he kept them - what a treasure they would be. Apart from the Language Arts article ‘Read like a Writer’ two other memorable Language Arts articles Frank Smith wrote in 1981 were ‘Demonstrations, Engagement and Sensitivity: a Revised Approach to Language Learning’ and ‘ Demonstrations, Engagement and Sensitivity: the Choice between People and Programs’. They are still important reading for everyone involved in literary education. He has left us a wealth of knowledge in his writing and it would be worthwhile trying to make it more accessible for today’s teachers. VALE Frank Smith

14.01.2022 Preservice teachers check this out!!!! University classes cover a lot of ground. The big issue is pulling it all together into a coherent way of operating when ...you walk into a classroom on Day 1. What do I do first? And next? How do I teach someone to read and write and get along and be productive? This session is designed to help you make the transition from becoming a teacher to being the Teacher. 05.01.2022 Good morning Campers! It's writing week! (Week 2, Day #1) Today we're looking at ISLANDBORN and THE WRITING STRATEGIES BOOK. I'm sharing strategies 9.31 and 6.7.... Which ones can you find? I'm also sharing with you another way to share quick recorded videos for asynchronous lessons for remote instruction. So this makes three ways you've seen them so far: 1. Just me on the camera, talking to you, holding stuff up as visuals as I teach; 2. Creating a YouTuber style video using the clips app, and 3. Creating a slide deck and recording VoiceOver. (If you're interested, this one took the MOST time to prepare at about 20 minutes, the clips video took under 10, and the jumping on camera takes me about 2 minute to prep). Which do you prefer as a learner? Be sure to check out Nicole’s video in Spanish for those of you sharing LOLA with students: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ReadingStrategiesBook/permalink/2085545141577624/
04.01.2022 What a great writing task! All in a day's work of a museum curator.

02.01.2022 ALEA Top End Council started off our AGM in a wonderful way this weekend with ‘A Showcase of Rich Literacy Experiences’. This was an opportunity for teachers to build their repertoire of rich literature to inform their learning and teaching programs. Our local council committee members, Helen Chatto and Ranae Graham, engaged teachers with practical teaching tips they could immediately use in their class as they explored highly recommended quality texts for all aspects of lit...eracy, including leadership. In a challenging year, we are very proud to have a strong and dedicated committee now even stronger with twelve members on our 2020-2021 committee. We are still looking for representation in the Katherine, Alice Springs and additional remote areas. If you are interested, please contact [email protected] to be a part of our dynamic team to build literacy and influence change.
01.01.2022 Some great PD coming up next year with our National Confetence- Challenge and Change being offered online. Stay tuned for registration details.
