12.01.2022 Had this pleasant little encounter while walking in the low tide last night. Here are some cool facts about Epaulettes sharks! - Epaulette sharks stay in shallow parts of the reef while the bigger sharks are forced into deeper water during low tides. - They have an uncanny ability to walk( using their fins as prototype legs) over shallower parts of the reef making them extremely agile and excellent hunters of crabs and worms. - Epaulettes can survive without oxygen 60 times l...onger than humans. In order to do this the little shark slows its breathing and heart rate and powers down its brain. @australia #seeaustralia @queensland #thisisqueensland @heronisland #heronisland @paditv #paditv @earthpix #earthpix @wildlifeplanet @natgeowild #natgeowild @natgeotravel #natgeotravel @welivetoexplore #welivetoexplore @discoverearth #discoverearth @discovery #discovery @earthfocus #earthfocus @sharksdaily @discoversharks @sharks

03.01.2022 One of my favourite little fish to observe is The Yellow Boxfish (Ostracion Cubicus). Here are some cool facts about them: - They only grow up to 45 cm and surprise, surprise - they are yellow and box-shaped - Despite looking super cute, their bodies are actually quite rugged and not many predators will rush to attack them. - When in danger the Boxfish secretes pahutoxin from special cells covering their entire skin and quickly disperses this clear mucus in what is effective...ly a cloud of regret for any engaged predator! The pahutoxin has what is known as a ‘haemolytic’ effect, meaning it bursts red blood cells. The toxic mucus binds to the gills and slowly asphyxiates its victim all at a concentration of 10 parts per million. To put it into more relative context of how potent pahutoxin is,10 parts per million is roughly the same as you spitting your mouthwash out on a morning but instead of the sink, into a 2.5million litre sized Olympic swimming pool! - As they’ve given up their speed and agility for a reinforced defensive toolbox, they can look quite awkward sticking out of the reef with their bright yellow color. Super fun to watch! @australia #seeaustralia @queensland #thisisqueensland @heronisland #heronisland @paditv #paditv @earthpix #earthpix @wildlifeplanet @natgeowild #natgeowild @natgeotravel #natgeotravel @welivetoexplore #welivetoexplore @discoverearth #discoverearth @discovery #discovery @earthfocus #earthfocus
