25.01.2022 >> Four stones laid this week are the first in the Netherlands to commemorate Jews and resistance fighters who were known to be gay, according to the Dutch historian Judith Schuyf, who played a leading role in the project. There was always a discussion in the Netherlands that gays and lesbians hadn’t been really persecuted in the war, she said. She knew otherwise, having identified several Jews and resistance fighters, who were identified as gay or lesbian in police files. <<

25.01.2022 Whilst grateful for the JCCV's sincere 2019 apology to Aleph Melbourne, the apology was not exactly for "its 1999 exclusion from the JCCV" as stated here by Jennifer Huppert. The apology was for homophobic language used at the JCCV Plenum meeting and also for impact to the community by the rejection of membership. That the JCCV followed the rules of their Constitution which required a 2/3 majority vote on any membership application is not something an apology needs to be give...n for. Noting the AJN story "JCCV’s ‘sorry’ to Aleph 20 years on" from April 2019: The motion stated, This plenum now apologises unconditionally to all members of our community who were impacted by the rejection of the Aleph Melbourne membership application and for the unacceptable homophobic views expressed during the debate. We apologise for the deep offence and humiliation caused by the hateful words spoken in the course of the debate. We apologise for the subsequent distress, further marginalisation and stigmatisation caused by the rejection of Aleph Melbourne’s membership application.

24.01.2022 In 2002 Jonathan Sacks became a patron of JAT, the Jewish Aids Trust. At the time the United Synagogue, the Orthodox organisation of which he was chief rabbi, was reluctant to acknowledge the presence of gay men or lesbians within the Jewish community, or that HIV was a virus that Jews needed to worry about. By speaking out, he enabled many not to feel excluded by their sexual orientation or having to conceal their state of health. Ruth Hilton

20.01.2022 Intersex Awareness Day 2020 https://aleph.org.au/intersex-support/ https://ihra.org.au/36655/intersex-awareness-day-2020

18.01.2022 Hopefully the first of many conversations destigmatising diversity in sexuality and gender identity.

15.01.2022 Excellent news.

15.01.2022 A very powerful (very) short from Cairo Mobile Film Festival: "As a secular straight student at Jewish University, I have witnessed the struggle of the Orthodox Jewish LGBTQ community to gain recognition from the University. The natural tension between tradition and innovation arouses my curiosity, especially when there are those who suppose that some of our biblical heroes loved their same sex, like David and Jonathan. I wanted to touch on this ongoing conflict between faith... and self expression. Is there another way by which we can live and let live? Directed by: Lara Vosburgh Country: United States of America"

12.01.2022 "In this podcast, Nicholes Family Lawyers Partner Bec Dahl and Law Clerk Chris Neophitou are joined by Dori Rivkin, Senior Research Scholar and Social Inclusion Team Leader (Family Group) at the Myers-JDC-Brookdale Institute, Israel’s leading centre for applied social research. Bec, Chris and Dori discuss the legal position and rights of LGBTIQA+ people in Israel, as an international comparison to Australia."

10.01.2022 Leibler Yavneh College (LYC) has launched a student wellbeing policy, committed to ensuring a safe and inclusive community for all students, staff and community... members including those students who identify as LGBTI+. LYC Co-Chairs Gerard Max and Ari Schachna said the policy was drafted to clarify the school’s position on this issue, ensuring all students and staff continue to feel safe and supported. The policy adapts and provides Australian context to Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis’ publication, The Wellbeing of LGBTI+ Pupils A Guide for Orthodox Jewish Schools published with KeshetUK in 2018. It addresses halacha, as well as the emotional importance of the issue. In a letter to parents, Principal Cherylyn Skewes, Max and Schachna explained that caring for the wellbeing of LGBTI+ students does not negate nor detract from our commitment to Torah and Torah values. Rather, it is our obligation, as part of our commitment to Torah. The formulation of the policy was overseen by Mizrachi Senior Rabbi and RCV co-Vice President, Rabbi Danny Mirvis, son of Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis. To familiarise staff with the new policy, LYC teachers undertook professional development, ensuring they are equipped to support students who identify as LGBTI+. It is of great importance that all members of staff should have the knowledge, skills and confidence to address the needs of these students and their families, providing support and guidance within a Torah framework, Max and Schachna said. As part of the staff training, Rabbi Mirvis shared a public conversation with Yavneh alumnus Eitan Meyerowitz, who provided a unique personal insight into his experiences as an LGBTI+ student in the school. Students and parents have also been informed of the policy - which includes fostering a supportive environment that encourages the development of positive relationships and communication between staff, students and parents/carers, as well as promoting responsible bystander behaviour amongst students, staff and parents/carers. Rabbi Danny Mirvis commented that my father’s guide has had a significant, positive impact on many lives around the globe. I applaud Yavneh’s leadership in sending a positive message of care and respect for all students, staff and community members -- Resources: Mizrachi Senior Rabbi Danny Mirvis’ interview with Yavneh Alumnus at staff member Eitan Meyerowitz can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haKpdqWjNL4&feature=youtu.be The LYC Policy and Chief Rabbi Efraim Mirvis’ Guide can be read here: https://www.yavneh.vic.edu.au//Positive-Relationships-Poli https://chiefrabbi.org//The-Wellbeing-of-LGBT-Pupils-A-Gui

10.01.2022 We’re supporting people with intersex variations in Melbourne’s Jewish community. Intersex Awareness Day 2020.

09.01.2022 Kudos to Leibler Yavneh College on their "Wellbeing of LGBTI+ Students Policy".

07.01.2022 >> He said that media, which he described as how we connect as a society, has become a safe space for racists to normalise hateful rhetoric without fear of consequences. This is why social media is increasingly unsafe for Jewish people, just as it is becoming for women, Black people, Muslims, LGBT people and many other groups, he added. <<

02.01.2022 "Victoria will become the first state or territory in Australia to make the public display of Nazi symbols illegal in a landmark reform to help stamp out hateful behaviour and boost human rights protections. The Andrews Labor Government will also extend the state’s anti-vilification protections beyond race and religion to cover areas such as sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, and HIV/AIDS status."

02.01.2022 Transgender Day of Remembrance: Memorial and Panel Discussion with Keshet and the World Congress of GLBT Jews The World Congress of GLBT Jews is proud to partner with Keshet to convene a memorial event and panel discussion for Transgender Day of Remembrance. Join us to honor and mourn the lives that have been lost to anti-transgender violence. In their memory, we will convene a panel of transgender activists, spiritual leaders, and thinkers who will share their visions of a w...orld without transphobia and violence, and outline actions that we can all take to build a world that honors and protects transgender lives. https://glbtjews.org www.keshetonline.org Nov 19, 2020 12:00 PM in Eastern Time (US and Canada) https://zoom.us//regi/tJErceqspz4sH9J-yutI05BbNGXkv86rFOqd
