17.01.2022 We love our customers and their pets. We are a small operation and we are doing our best to keep operating in these uncertain times. I run Alert Pets on my own with some help from family. Sometimes this means I may not always reply to messages immediately but I will get back to you as soon as possible. We are doing our best to keep on filling orders but if there is something you would like and it’s not listed on the Website please email sales@ alertpets.com.au and we will try... to find the item for you. Please stay shade and we’ll, play with your pets and we will see you all on the other side. See more

11.01.2022 SCENT AND PERCEPTION (03) Drs. Resi Gerritsen and Ruud Haak A Smelling Animal. As with all animals, the sensory perceptions of the dog are not equal to ours or ...to our imagination. We may not forget that the dog is, before everything, a smelling animal, meaning that his olfactory system delivers to him the most perceptions, and he will perceive through this sense before any other. Hearing is second most important, followed by sight. As we saw before, in humans is sight the dominant sense. This is of great importance in making comparisons between human and dog, not only for orienting in a room, but also in recognizing articles. Our room, that means the room in which we live is optical built. We distinguish front, behind, above and under in the first place with our eyes. We arrange the articles in a room, the flowers in a garden, in such a way that our eyes oversee them, and because of our sight perceptions we can find our way in it. Odor Towers. When one imagines this well, one can understand how totally differently the dog experiences our human environment. Because the dog lives primarily in a world of odor. For people, a visible item has more meaning and therefore determines how we imagine our environment. Similarly, there will exist odor towers for the dog, large odor surfaces, which decide how he orients himself. Furthermore, one has to remember that the dog walks on four legs and has his head closer to the ground. One cannot really imagine the spatial view of the dog; not even when we walk on hands and feet ourselves and keep the head close to the ground. We have a different physique and because of that a different spatial sense, in which things have their place. It is vital for everyone working with tracking or detector dogs to realize all these different things, because it can be of decisive interest in assessing the behavior of the dog! (to be continued) Figure: How totally differently the dog experiences our human environment because the dog lives primarily in a world of odor...
