25.01.2022 In Term 3, students in Year 10 took on the role of detective and put together a police file on the death of at least one of the characters in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Students read the play and discussed the important circumstances surrounding the deaths of Mercutio, Tybalt, Paris, Romeo and Juliet. Students selected one of these crimes, interviewed suspects, collected evidence and put together their findings, concluding with an evaluation of who was responsible for the crime. The students enjoyed the creative approach to the challenging text and were proud of their sleuthing efforts.

25.01.2022 Today we had a lesson with our transition class at Cooks Hill campus about World War 1. We learnt about trench warfare and made model trenches in the garden with toy soldiers and found objects. Paddle pop sticks were used to show the timber walkways built to avoid trench foot. We used bubble wrap to represent sandbags to support the walls. There are bunkers where soldiers slept and ate while in the trenches and there are fences and string as barbed wire in no man’s land.

25.01.2022 Lego Building Competition! Students worked in groups with a set of Lego to build the same theme. Finished projects were then taken outside and put under the ‘blower vac’ to determine who’s was the strongest.

25.01.2022 Students were treated to lunch that was supplied by one of their own fellow students, Brigette Channer and her mother, Tomoyo, using their Japanese culture and culinary skills to create the sushi and gyoza masterpieces in the photos. Furthermore, Mitch treated the students even further by whipping up some home-made KFC chicken for all the students. DELICIOUS. Happy faces all round and no complaints from any of the students today!

22.01.2022 This week is Anti-Poverty Week 2020, which aims to support the Australian community in having an increased understanding of poverty and how we can take action to collectively end it. To support this cause, we are taking part in activities around the theme of 'Breaking the Cycle of Poverty through Education'. Education breaks down barriers and allows people access to a better future. Alesco provides an educational setting like no other. It is a safe, supportive space where students can learn to reach their potential, no matter what their background.

20.01.2022 T-shirt designs Students used their artistic creations to design their own shirt print. They then ironed the design onto a shirt to take home.

20.01.2022 This week in support for Anti-Poverty Week 2020, we took our learning environment back to basics to try and understand what it is like for students in developing countries. Our students set up under the pergola outside and sat on rugs, with none of our usual comforts such as air con, furniture, etc.

19.01.2022 To recognise Anti-Poverty Week, Alesco Cessnock students participated in a mystery box cook-off. Students were given a surprise selection of budget-friendly foods and were tasked with cooking a delicious meal. The cooks got very creative and produced some amazing plates of food including a delicious pasta dish and scrumptious tandoori chicken. The winners of the cook-off prepared a delicious Mexican inspired dish of mince, rice and beans. Students and staff greatly enjoyed the activity, and learnt how to cook on a budget.

17.01.2022 Students at Alesco Northlakes had a lot of fun creating their own tie dye apparel in Art last week. This process involves using elastic bands to manipulate the desired pattern chosen by students, adding an array of colour, zapping it in the microwave to speed up the dye process and then removing the bands to reveal their work of art! Our tie dye experience was a massive success and we can’t wait to do more!

17.01.2022 Congratulations to Alesco Cessnock’s student Joel Gilmour for achieving the Paul Mather Memorial Award for Alesco Student of the Year 2020. Joel embodies the Alesco philosophy through his work ethic, dedication and the manner in which he conducts himself within our school and the broader community. He has consistently applied himself in all subject areas, obtaining the Overall Academic Achievement Award for his efforts in Preliminary studies. Congratulations to Joel and a...ll of the nominees for their commitment to personal development and learning. We are very proud of you all! #ALW2020

16.01.2022 As part of our Anti-Poverty Week activities, we dined below the line by creating low cost meals. Here is what we made and ate for this challenge.

14.01.2022 Year 9 and 10 are creating their own imaginative designs on their own skateboards, which they have the option of turning into a rideable skateboard, or an awesome graphic piece for their homes. Some truly innovative and cool colour displays show the variety of skills in our students. The staff at North Lakes are so proud of each of the students that are participating in their own skateboard designs.

05.01.2022 NAIDOC week celebrations at Alesco Tuncurry happened a bit earlier this year in late October to allow the whole school to participate before senior students sat their HSC. The stage 6 Aboriginal Studies class, along with their teacher Juliet Hinchliffe coordinated the schools celebrations around the 2020 NAIDOC day theme which involved creating 'We Walk together' artwork. The class decided on using their own foot prints on the art piece to emphasise that 'The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples', and that the class is diverse and are walking a journey together.

05.01.2022 To finish off NAIDOC celebrations our Alesco Tuncurry students used the new commercial kitchen which was installed just over 12 months ago to decorate cupcakes using fondant. They used professional grade equipment and produced an array of cupcakes with Aboriginal flags and Torres Strait Islander flags which were displayed on cupcakes that had been topped with buttercream icing.

02.01.2022 Our Alesco Tuncurry students painted paper hands in the Aboriginal Flag colours and were invited to write something about their personal identity to be displayed together as a sea of hands. This included students listing their Aboriginal or Torres Strait Nation, Language group, cultural heritage, birthplace, location or an inspiring quote. Students used this activity to reflect on the NAIDOC theme of learning and sharing culture with others whilst reinforcing Australia’s Indigenous culture.

01.01.2022 Living on $2 dollars We took the challenge of trying to live (well grocery shop) on less than $2 a day... just for one day. Today is the last day of Anti-Poverty Week for 2020. Here are some of the things we've learnt:... We discovered that poverty isn’t just about a lack of money. It is also about a lack of access to basic needs and equity. While many Australians juggle payments of bills, people living in poverty often have terrible options such as skipping a meal to pay for a child’s textbooks, missing medication or not heating or cooling their home." How many people are living in poverty in Australia? The ACOSS/UNSW Poverty in Australia 20202 report found: In Australia, there are more than 3.24 million people or 13.6% of the population living below the poverty line. That includes 774,000 children or more than 1 in 6. Many of those affected are living in deep poverty on average $282 a week below the poverty line Find out more: https://antipovertyweek.org.au

01.01.2022 Alesco North Lakes Head Teacher, Grant Dennis and Year 13 student Robert discuss their experiences at Alesco and what Anti-Poverty Week means to them. Alesco provides a safe space for our students and supports them in breaking a cycle of poverty and disempowerment. It is an environment designed specifically to support inclusion and individual needs.
