Under the watchful eye & by the rules of FSANZ (Food regulatory agency in Aus and NZ), food companies are allowed to label their products with certain claims/phrases.... . There’s an increasing list of them- sometimes they are useful, as they help consumers make healthier and/or educated eating choices. . Other times, debatably, phrases and claims could be used to grab consumers’ attention, influencing them to believe the food product is healthy. . Just because there’s a label/phrase on there to do with nutrition, it doesn’t mean it is necessarily the best decision to make. . 21.01.2022 BACK INTO LOCKDOWN, good ol’ Victoria . Instead of being negative, let’s keep our heads up and fill that glass halfway instead. (Enough with the cliches Alex, what can we do?) .... INCORPORATE PROTEIN AND FIBRE INTO EVERY MEAL AND SNACK- meat/fish/poultry/dairy/eggs/legumes/tofu/whey protein (protein), fruit/vegetables/whole grains/legumes (fibre) . FOOD ENVIRONMENT: buy a small amount of treats you love, but aim to not fill your pantry and fridge with them. If you don’t buy them and have them in your house, they are far less accessible. . STAY ACTIVE: Daily. Walking, jogging, home garage workouts, whatever it is. Anything is better than nothing. Don’t chase ‘optimal’/‘ideal’ in difficult circumstances! . COMMUNICATE: stay in touch with family and friends, over social media, and video calls. . Just some ways to help support your physical, social and mental health during these frustrating times . 16.01.2022 LONG READ (hopefully worth it) . For those who don’t know what IIFYM is, it stands for ‘If It Fits Your Macros’. Simply put, as long as the food and drink one consumes fits within their energy (and macronutrient) targets for the day, then they can eat/drink whatever they want to. . ... One of the key advantages is that it allows somebody to enjoy whatever they wish, or in other words, allows a FLEXIBLE dietary pattern. . No food or food group in this approach is demonised/instructed to be cut-out of one’s diet like many extreme approaches out there. . However, there are pitfalls to this approach. . To put it into perspective, somebody could achieve their protein, carbohydrate and fat targets by drinking whey protein, eating Froot Loops and drinking oil. . I DO NOT ADVISE THIS. . Long story short, if somebody stays within their energy and macronutrient requirements, they could potentially achieve body composition goals, eating predominantly junk food. . The problem is- just because somebody is in visually aesthetic condition, this doesn’t mean they are meeting their micronutrient (vitamins and minerals) or fibre requirements, thus, they may not be physically healthy now and/or down the track. . Whilst following IIFYM, to ensure we are doing our best to meet our nutrient requirements, it’s important to base most of our intake around the CORE FOOD GROUPS: - Vegetables, beans and legumes - Fruit - Whole grain bread and cereal products - Dairy (or suitable alternatives) - Lean meat, fish, poultry, eggs (or suitable plant based alternatives . If your energy demands are higher, once your core food group intake has been met, then you may have more ‘room’ to eat more refined food products, which are higher in refined starches, added sugar and oils, to help you meet your energy requirements without feeling overly full from large quantities of whole foods. . HOWEVER, it is important to meet your recommended number of servings of CORE FOOD GROUPS, BEFORE incorporating ‘treat’ foods into your diet, aiming to meet your total nutrient requirements, rather than just staying within an energy budget. . 11.01.2022 Dairy (and suitable alternatives) are in the Australian Dietary Guidelines as a core food group for a reason. . Dairy is rich in calcium (yeah yeah Alex Grandma taught me that when I was 5), quality protein, phosphorus, iodine, vitamin B2 and many other nutrients. .... HOWEVER, unfortunately many people suffer from different degrees of lactose intolerance- when they do not produce sufficient amounts of lactase to break down lactose in milk, leaving them feeling like a bloated, gassy mess (sometimes worse ) . Before you head to Google to read about how every second Joe and Karen from down the street swears that dairy is the devil (), that it causes inflammation (), or that it causes calcium to leach from your bones (seriously guys?), I encourage you to LOOK FOR LOWER LACTOSE or LACTOSE FREE versions of dairy instead! . This allows you to reap some or most of the nutritional benefits that dairy has to gift you, hopefully without leaving your stomach feeling ‘blegh’. . Always consult the Aus Dietary Guidelines for your nutrition information Dairy has so much to offer you and I promise it won’t be evil to you. . *Look for plant-based milks with minimum 100mg calcium/100ml (some don’t add any, or much calcium)
