22.01.2022 Does it matter if dentists, hygienists and OHTs work with a raised shoulder? Yes it does. Bending over patients with a raised shoulder(s) (it is usually the le...ft shoulder for right handed clinicians) is a harmful work posture. It is harmful because the muscles, which raise the shoulder, are movement muscles, not designed for prolonged contraction. This is one of the reasons for the high incidence of occupational chronic neck, back and shoulder pain and discomfort. Start paying attention to what you are doing with your shoulder during treatment, it takes only a brief moment to notice. I used to raise my shoulders unnecessarily when I was reaching for instruments and treating patients. I suffered disabling burning pain especially in my left shoulder for decades. You can change the way you reach for instruments and how you place your hands in patients mouths by activating the muscles under the arm. Start movement of the hand and forearm from underneath - as if you are carrying a tray - to avoid unnecessary activation of the upper trapezius. *** Take care of yourself. You are your most precious instrument. Learn to cultivate postural awareness and train in optimal posture and movement patterns in the clinic and daily life in Optimum Dental Posture Programs. 22.01.2022 Performance is potential minus internal interference

19.01.2022 Me time for you and your spine During the Coronavirus crisis you probably have more time on your hands and anything that can help us stay calm and having som...ething else to focus on is welcome. The Alexander Technique has a wonderfully easy and beneficial practice that anyone can do on their own, every day and all days. It involves lying down on a firm cushioned surface in a semi-supine position. I call it dynamic resting, or active rest, or constructive rest as it is more than a relaxation technique or just having a nap. Intervertebral discs are largely made of water, especially the inner nucleus. During waking hours when spending most of the time in an upright position, standing walking or sitting (often slumped), the intervertebral discs become compressed and lose moisture. Sitting slumped, not just on the sofa but also at the desk or dinner table, increases the intervertebral pressure three-fold. Normally it is only during the night that the pressure is sufficiently reduced so the discs can again soak up lost moisture. This is one reason why we are a little taller when we wake up in the morning and gradually become shorter as the day goes on. But this practice comes to the rescue. You can happily practice this once or twice a day for 10-20 minutes to allow re-plumping of the discs. It is also a way to re-educate your body and mind into a better postural habits. Here it is: Find a space on a mat or rug on the floor (not a bed or other soft surface as his will give inadequate support to the parts of the body designed to bear weight). Lie down in the with a small stack (2-6cm) of paperbacks supporting the head and the knees bent, feet about shoulder width apart, feet flat on the floor. Place your open hands, palms down on your abdomen with the elbows on the floor, pointing out away from the body. Your weight should ideally be distributed between these points: The feet The back rim of the pelvis The shoulder blades The back of the head The elbows Now let gravity and time do the work for you!

11.01.2022 "You could safely state that a primary purpose of good use, described thus by F M Alexander, and now taught by teachers of his now named Alexander Technique is ...to guard against acquired self-injury. 11.01.2022 First day with Jenny Thirtle. We had some thinking and discussion about how to define and explain AT terminologies, activities of continuously freeing the neck all the time, and hands on practice. Many interesting things worth to keep on working. #AlexanderTechnique #neck-free #Direction

08.01.2022 Always be gentle with yourself. Especially now during the greatest challenges we’ve ever faced in our lives with this pandemic, be gentle with yourself. When yo...u find yourself being self-critical, back off and soften. When you find you are undercutting yourself, remember this attitude is not fair. You deserve better. When you are feeling sorry for yourself, take a few slow deep breaths. Remember you are alive. Remember, not just you, but many others also are feeling sorry for themselves. Now more than ever we need to take good care of ourselves. We need to be gentle with ourself. We need to be gentle with others. Even if we are physically isolated, we can still from the heart be connected in community. Emaho! See more

07.01.2022 People have been asking me about Primary Control. I am putting inverted commas around it, because people mean different things by it. E.g. if you had asked me... 35 years ago, I may have waffled vaguely about the head and neck. Now I would say more precisely that the PC is a relationship between the head, trunk and limbs. The PC can also be viewed via the breath. Ideally the PC is elastic, not rigid; adaptable to the moment, not fixed in time; and responsive to our attention and intention. In the traditional formulation, when the PC is working well, the head is oriented out (ie forward and out), while the back is lengthening and widening, and arms and legs are releasing outwards. It is usually clear that a well-organised PC is also characterised by freedom and responsiveness in the breathing; breathing and movement generally are facilitated. Movement of the limbs or of breathing does not have the effect of disturbing the well-organised PCs overall elastic coordination. When we respond via a well-organised PC to any stimulus, inner or outer, for example moving in space (outer), or having a thought or experiencing emotion (inner), it means that we do not disturb this coordinated elasticity. In other words, when the PC is working well, not only is the head oriented out, the back lengthening and widening (sometimes referred to as staying back), and arms and legs releasing outwards; but also breathing is facilitated, allowing freedom and responsiveness (to any demand or change). Further, many people report a sort of grounded lightness. In fact, Id suggest that breathing cannot be truly free and responsive without that particular quality of connected elasticity in the relationship between head, trunk and limbs (which also facilitates the grounded lightness), which we recognise as having something to do with the primary control. A good teachers job is to help a person to experience their PC working better. This is synonymous with an experience of integration, physically and perhaps also in other ways. A good teacher can clearly articulate the what, the how and the why and can help the pupil to understand and connect these. We dont want mystery; we want understanding. Understanding empowers us. https://freedominaction.com.au/teacher-resources/ See more

07.01.2022 As LBME Melissa Malde approached the fourth edition of What Every Singer Needs to Know About the Body, she tried to question every assumption from previous edit...ions. "If muscles always pull and never push, why do we describe the action of the diaphragm as pushing down on the viscera and out on the ribs? If the jaw is a single bone, attached to the skull at the temporomandibular joint, why do we use the phrase "open the jaw"? In this webinar, Melissa will talk about discoveries she made as she pondered these and other questions, and the struggle to find accurate, yet accessible, language to describe the movements of breathing and the vocal tract. 05.01.2022 Ive been thinking about something in recent months. Im 60 years old, and Im tired of my work as a journalist. I want to change. I have been considering takin...g an AT training course; not necessarily to teach, but at least to learn the technique intensively. My experience with the AT has been sporadic over 30 years, because Ive not often had any teachers where Ive lived. Would someone be welcome in a teacher training course with this objective? Perhaps I might like to teach afterwards, but its a three-year course (right?), and I have no illusions about the financial viability. So while I cant just quit my day job and jump into it, it might be something that keeps me going over the next few years.

03.01.2022 Dental Ergonomic Advice & Demonstrations at ADX20 I will be available for ergonomic advice and training next to Stand 597, in a space provided by ExamVision, a ...Danish company which makes loupes and lights, and Surgical & Medical Supplies, its Australian distributor. I will not be there to promote ExamVision loupes. I am still checking out this product and learning about the way Surgical & Medical Supplies is measuring up and providing customer service. Due to ExamVisions great interest in ergonomics, it is offering dentists the opportunity to watch demonstrations and experience kinaesthetic guidance in optimal work postures by providing space at ADX20. A-dec dental equipment will be provided by Dental Installations. I am grateful to ExamVision, Surgical & Medical Supplies and Dental Installations for providing me the opportunity to help dental practitioners and their teams reduce the risk of occupational chronic pain. As many of you know, I am passionate about saving my colleagues from suffering. If you are at ADX20 you are welcome spend time with me and learn how you can look after yourself in the clinic. 02.01.2022 About the Smart Yoga Training course: Who is the course for? It is for yoga and Alexander technique teachers and trainees. It is not intended as a teaching qua...lification in either the Alexander technique or yoga. What does the course offer? We have made the decision not to offer a full yoga teacher training, but to cover primarily asana and breathing bu fully integrating the Alexander technique into this area of yoga. It is not a course for beginners, but it offers further professional development in a format that works for both yoga and Alexander teachers. We have made this decision from an observation that most yoga trainings do not offer adequate training in asana (at least from our perspective as Alexander technique teachers). Certainly, many yoga teachers feel a considerable inadequacy in this area, which is the area in which most of them are teaching. I have also observed that some Alexander technique training courses do not adequately cover the application of the technique to the analysis of the full range of movement possibilities and activities. Therefore, some teachers find some difficulty in analysing and giving advice on the sort of exercises that their students may be doing, , whether from yoga, Pilates physiotherapy or elsewhere. What sort of certification do we NOT offer? Alexander teachers wishing to gain recognition from a yoga certifying body will still need to go through them. They may be able to apply for recognition of prior learning for asana but we are not covering yoga philosophy in any depth in this course. Yoga teachers wishing to gain recognition from STAT or another certifying body will obviously need to meet their training requirements. Some yoga teachers who we have trained in the past have subsequently decided to do a full Alexander training course. What sort of certification do we offer? A Smart Yoga certification based on the approach to yoga outlined in my book, which is basically the application of the Alexander technique to yoga practice. People with this qualification will be listed on our website as people who understand coordinated movement to a basic level required to teach others. What will Alexander teachers get from this course? Those who are already qualified as yoga teachers will refine their understanding and teaching and fully embed the Alexander technique in their approach to teaching. They will in fact be able to use their yoga teaching to teach the Alexander technique. Those who do yoga as a personal practice will refine their ability to apply the Alexander technique to their practice. Some teachers approach their yoga practice as separate from their Alexander technique practice. I would like to change this perception. Those who are not yoga teachers will have the ability to be able to observe and give feedback and advice to their students who may be doing yoga or exercises from Pilates or other practitioners. What will yoga teachers get from this course? Yoga teachers will develop an understanding of, and an ability to assess the Primary Control of their students and to give verbal feedback in classes Yoga teachers will learn to refine their own practice Yoga teachers may be able use this course as continuous professional development with their relevant society

02.01.2022 I introduced the Alexander Technique to some wonderful people last night. We had a great night together and I look forward to continuing to work with them.
