18.01.2022 Please ensure you check your smoke alarms... it may just save your life!

17.01.2022 BA Training! Today a number of our members underwent valuable BA (Breathing Apparatus) training under strict Covid-19 regulations, BA ensures that our members can not only breath but are well protected from toxic gases, smoke and other harmful effects during structure fires, motor vehicle fires and hazmat incidents. We are lucky enough to have access to a BA trailer that is shared within our district that has a total of 6 BA sets and a number of spare cylinders to train wit...h. This ensures we are not using our own sets off our fleet in the event that we are called out to an emergency in that time. Our BA operators are required to undergo BA skills maintenance every 6 months! This gives us the chance to brush up on our skills and make sure we are ready for when you need us. We continue to train with set standards with all our members practicing to don their BA within 90 Seconds! Go team!

17.01.2022 A Dozen ways to Prepare Your Property It's getting warmer and the Fire Danger Ratings are getting up across the State. The Shire of Murrindindi are in the pro...cess of issuing Fire Prevention Notices for properties in and around Buxton. Under Section 41 of the CFA Act, in the country area of Victoria, the fire prevention officer of a municipal council may serve a fire prevention notice on the owner or occupier of land in the municipal district of that council... in respect of anything (a) on that land, other than a building or in a building; [or] (b) on the adjacent half width of any private street that abuts that land... that by its nature, composition, condition or location constitutes or may constitute a danger to life or property from the threat of fire. Members of the brigade are available to undertake a Property Advice Visit, albeit virtually at present, to help property owners or occupants get ready for Summer. Email us at [email protected] for more info. Publications and advice are available on the CFA website at https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare The twelve things to consider are: Mature trees can help shield against radiant heat and embers. They must be strategically located and well managed. Remove flammable items from decks and verandahs, such as boxes, furniture and doormats. Keep woodpiles away from the house or other significant buildings. Stray fire embers can easily ignite woodpiles. Keep grass cut to less than 10cm. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. Store flammable liquids away from the house or othersignificantbuildings. Where possible, store in flame proof containers. Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark. Prune lower branches of shrubs to separate from surface fuels underneath and prune shrubs well away from branches of mature trees. Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property no branches in 10m space. Do not have large shrubs next to or under windows. Use pebbles and rocks in your garden (not flammable mulch). Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter. Arrange a Property Advice Visit from CFA.

15.01.2022 Rapid Multi-Agency Response to Green Waste Fire A rapid multi-agency response effectively contained a fire at the Marysville green waste facility on Wednesday a...fternoon. The fire was discovered at the facility around 2:10pm with the last appliances departing the scene around 8:30pm that evening. Marysville, Buxton and Narbethong brigades were initially responded to a report of a fire in a bin at the waste transfer station. Smoke was visible to the Marysville appliances as they departed their station and, upon arrival, a status of Not-Yet-Under-Control was placed on the fire by Incident Controller, Lt Paul Martin. A request for additional tankers resulted in Taggerty being paged however they were held in reserve to cover the Triangle area. Tankers from Buxton and Narbethong made access to the adjoining storage yard to undertake asset protection and to contain the southern side of the burning piles. The units from Marysville and the other Buxton unit made an initial attack on the burning piles to contain it's spread. Units from Forest Fire Management Victoria, based at Marysville, responded to the incident and played a crucial role with supplying additional water and providing crew while the fire was being contained. The FFMV resources were eventually released once a hose line had been run from the nearest hydrant into the recycling area. FFMV crews patrolled nearby forest areas in case embers spotted out of the burning piles. Once the fire was contained, the Scoresby Hose Layer was responded along with two pumpers so ground water monitors could be deployed to ship large volumes of water in order to extinguish the burning piles. The pumpers responded from Alexandra and Healesville. Upon arrival the Scoresby Hose Layer deployed a single line of 100mm diameter hose from the hydrant located on Racecourse and Sunds Road to the recycle area and then down into the green waste. Healesville Pumper drew water from the main and pumped it to Alexandra Pumper located in the recycle area. Alexandra then supplied the hose monitor located above the piles and the Marysville Tanker down in the green waste yard. Due to the heat of the day and the difficult working conditions, a health surveillance team was requested with the Yellingbo Rehabilitation unit attending. A number of members were cared for by the Rehab team and checked for their hydration status. Murrindindi Shire Council also attended and assisted the Incident Management Team in managing the fire. A Council escavator was transported from Alexandra and, once hose crews were in place, was used to break the piles of burning green waste apart. A ground monitor and hose line crews extinguished burning materials as the excavator operator pulled the piles apart. Goulburn Murray Water also attended to assist with ensuring the maximum volume of water was made available to the scene. The Incident Management Team was also assisting by the Alexandra Group duty officer and duty staff from CFA District 12. Catering at the scene was provided by members of the Marysville Fire Brigade. Once again, a well executed multi-agency response resulted in a great outcome. The fire was declared safe around 6:00pm with crews being progressively released to ensure coverage was maintained in the local area.

09.01.2022 Online fire permit system launches for Victorians Victorians can now apply for a fire permit online in a single place, the state’s fire and rescue services have... announced. 27/11/20 19.05pm From today, residents and businesses using fire or heat sources such as commercial catering, fireworks, welding and more can use the joint Fire Permits Victoria website to: Check if they need a fire permit. Apply for a fire permit. Notify authorities that they are using a permit Register a burn-off when restrictions are not in place. The multiagency online transaction system, supported by CFA, DELWP and FRV, improves the way Victoria’s fire and rescue services work with local governments and Municipal Fire Prevention Officers (MFPOs) to assess and issue fire permits. CFA’s Deputy Chief Officer Alen Slijepcevic said it would help improve the way fire and rescue services manage fire risk across the state and enable them to communicate quickly and consistently with permit holders and applicants. The Fire Permits Victoria website allows agencies to communicate with applicants and permit holders in a timely and efficient manner, and is able to provide consistent and timely advice on suspending or revoking a permit if conditions change, he said. Fire Rescue Victoria Deputy Commissioner of Fire Safety Michelle Young said the website provides an accessible, user-friendly online system for all Victorians to apply for fire permits. Wherever you live across the state, Fire Permits Victoria will streamline the application process, and enable permit holders and applicants to stay up-to-date with critical safety information and advice from the state’s fire and rescue agencies, she said. Forest Fire Management Victoria Chief Fire Officer Chris Hardman said the system provides a simple, quick and easy web-based form for permit holders to notify ESTA and agencies when approved permits will be used. This frees up ESTA resources to focus on their core work such as call-taking and emergency dispatch and provides agencies with better information to manage fire risk in an efficient and effective way, he said. Successful fire permit applicants are reminded follow fire and rescue services’ advice to keep fires safe: Follow regulations or laws set by CFA and your local council. Register your burn off via the Fire Permits Victoria website, or call 1800 668 511. Notify neighbours if your activity will generate fire and smoke. Check and monitor weather conditions - particularly wind - on the day and coming days. Leave a three-metre fire break, free from flammable materials around the burn. Have sufficient equipment and water to stop the fire spreading; don’t leave it unattended Make sure you properly extinguish your fire before you leave it. If your burn-off gets out of control, call Triple Zero (000) immediately. Victorians are reminded to adhere to physical distancing and hygiene requirements to ensure permitted activities are carried out safely. Visit firepermits.vic.gov.au for safety tips and to check, apply, notify and register for fire a permit.
