22.01.2022 It’s my pleasure to curate ‘As Within’ an exhibition by ceramicist Clairy Laurence and painter Monica Usher. The show opens at Finite Art Space in Paddington on Thursday November 4, from 5.30 - 9pm, pop it in your diary, or visit from November 3-7, it’s open 10-4 daily. The new work by Laurence and Usher for ‘As Within’, explores sacred objects and their overlaid meanings, memories and significance. Laurence’s work explores ideas around life, death, change and rebirth. Ushe...r’s practice is an intuitive depiction of what is seen, and what remains hidden within the layers of paint. My curation of works by these sisters explores the conceptual connections between their practices through the installation and essay accompanying the exhibition. Stay tuned! @clairylaurence @monicausher.art

21.01.2022 This series of works by Monica Usher refers to as the holy vessels, she likes the idea that they could hold something holy or something we perceive as holy or anything really. The conversation then goes on to be about this idea that we overlay layers of meaning on objects and things - love it - this is where the next body of work will depart from watch this space - exciting times. The second image features multi layered screen prints by Rhi Johnson. These are the last days... for this show, it comes down on Saturday afternoon. 19.01.2022 Repost @petaberghofer Snippets from the studio: This week I wrapped up my at home residency via @outerspace.ari. Thank you Outer Space for all of your support! It was great to have a driving force behind my practice again. A solid time focusing on what’s next for my sculptural exhibition work and my functional series. I’ll be developing both projects as I move forward and am looking forward to sharing more as I do. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, it’s art funding and advisory body.

19.01.2022 This photograph of David Usher by @russell_shakespeare_leica depicts the way David paints, or loves to paint rather - outside, multiple paintings at one, all lined up and informing each other. As David makes a discovery in one painting that same idea flows through into the other paintings and a new series is created. Also note how the colours reference the landscape - love that. ‘Dromore’ is the name of the family property in St George where David is painting as we speak. 15.01.2022 This is one of my favourites.. it’s called ‘Reciprocity’, by Rhi Johnson, it, like all of her work, starts with a photo, and then evolves based on her memories. There are just a couple of these prints left. ‘Below the Surface’ is available to view in its final days at Lasso Gallery, Friday 12-4pm, Saturday 10-1pm. From the essay: ‘Johnson’s process of making a reduction lino print is also in the negative, beginning with a piece of lino. She starts carving, leaving the areas ...she wants in contact with the paper (this is often one of 12 or so cutting sessions). Johnson rolls ink onto the lino, slightly wets the paper, lays it on the printing press, places the lino on top, covers it with a blanket and rolls it through the printing press. This happens 20 times (or as many as the number of prints in the edition). After this first layer is complete and the prints are drying, Johnson will again cut into the lino The repetition of the process, the edition (or multiple) and layering of ideas and physical processes is an element that has also been explored through the installation of the exhibition. Multiple prints hang together, referencing their nature of existing as a multiple, framed reduction linocut prints appear in double, and a general layering in the approach to pairing the artists’ works occurs throughout the installation. This repetition is present in the layering of paint on the surface and appears in the layering of spaces in the images, which, in the artists’ words, allude to everyday environments, concealed or partially revealed content and aspects of the human condition. The exhibition explores what can be seen and what is hidden, and through this conscious and unconscious experience in the creation and development of the work, the artists also take us, the viewer, on the same journey, a slow journey into perpetual discovery.’ This work: Rhi Johnson, ‘Reciprocity’, 2021, reduction linocut, 31 x 36.5, $530 (framed) @artist_rhi @theresahallphoto #australianprintmaking #reductionlino #toowoombaregion #toowoomba

14.01.2022 Had to share this from Jude Roberts, she has beautiful work in the group show I’ve just put together too. Repost @jude_taggart_roberts River red gums are integral to the river systems and sacred to our Indigenous Peoples. Without various flows downstream the Baaka Darling river system will not survive. Flood plain harvesting is genocide to the land and people that live in the Murray Darling Basin. This Graphite and calcium carbonate sanded drawing is part of a series in progress.

14.01.2022 Stephen Spurrier has been making work for over 50 years, this large scale painting ‘Cosmic Moment #3’ features moons which reference a natural pull on the tides, our bodies and our minds. Cloud formations and other natural elements which appear in unlikely places are coupled with floating hand tools, aeroplanes, and highly geometric shapes creating a tension that suggests a link between the elements. The work explores the human condition, focussing on the relationship that h...umans have with each other, and with their environment. ‘Cosmic Moment #3’, 2015, acrylic on canvas, 183 x 123cm, $8200 This work is part of the ‘Satellites’ exhibition currently on show at ALG, located at Walton Stores, 482 Ruthven Street, open Wednesday to Saturday from noon - 5.30pm. 10.01.2022 This is another favourite section of the show and the first pairing of the artists works I put together.. it was that yellow I love how the two work together The work on the right by @artist_rhi is a view of Toowoomba, but as is the habit of her making process, Rhi Johnson starts with a picture then discards it half way through the lino block carving process, she does the rest by memory, in doing this she’s asking us to consider the nuances of reality and imagination Mor...e on this process from the essay: ‘Johnson is a printmaker, her work is initially based on a scene or situation that evokes an emotional response, then, as the work is created, the original ‘image’ shifts, as it becomes based on her memory. Johnson in some ways has a similar process to Usher, as she draws and cuts into sheets of lino the image then becomes a hybrid of what is, and what could be. Johnson says the works map a duality between conscious and unconscious experience, and the simultaneous implications of what is known and unknown.’ These works from left: Monica Usher, ‘Wattle Stained Cabbage Moths’, 2021, oil on linen, 60 x 60cm, $1150 SOLD Rhi Johnson, ‘Breaking Point’, 2020, reduction linocut, 37.5 x 47, $510 Available to view at @lasso.gallery 12-4pm today, 10-1pm tomorrow (Saturday) @monicausher.art #australianpainting #australianpaintmaking #reductionlinocut #printmaker #toowoombaregion #arttoowoomba

07.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC week Always Was Always Will Be. Read about Tyrown Waigana’s work featured in this image below Posted @withregram @naidocweek Tyrown Waigana (@crawlincrocodile), a Perth based artist and designer, has been named as this year’s winner of the prestigious National NAIDOC Poster Competition.... His winning entry - Shape of Land - was judged by the National #NAIDOC Committee to have best illustrated the 2020 NAIDOC theme: Always Was Always Will Be. Waigana, a proud Noongar and Saibai Islander, has previously been named as one of WA’s best new and emerging Indigenous artists. According to the 23-year-old, his winning entry depicts the Rainbow Serpent coming out of the Dreamtime to create this country and how we are strongly connected to it. The Rainbow Serpent is represented by the snake and it forms the shape of Australia, which symbolises how it created our lands. The colour from the Rainbow Serpent is reflected on to the figure to display our connection to the Rainbow Serpent, thus our connection to country. The overlapping colours on the outside is the Dreamtime. The figure inside the shape of Australia is a representation of Indigenous Australians showing that this country - since the dawn of time - always was, and always will be Aboriginal land, Mr Waigana added. To find out more about this year’s artwork and winning artist and to download a digital copy of the 2020 National NAIDOC Poster visit the NAIDOC website. Free printed copies of the 2020 National NAIDOC Poster will be available in coming months. #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe #Indigenous #Aboriginal #TorresStrait #FirstNations

07.01.2022 Repost @petaberghofer The third series on show now via @artisanqld for the ‘Unleashed’ emerging craft and design exhibition. ‘Before You Know It’ was made in Denmark at the Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Centre. In part it represents research into Danish ceramic trends, but mostly it’s the little things; Danish roof tops, the tiles of the floor in residency bathroom, & a love affair with the V&A museum during a stop in London. It’s a still life - an altered reality that encapsulates my December to January 2019-20. (Image: @studiobitsy)

04.01.2022 Sarah Ryan’s work ‘Electricity Rocks’, like all her work explores ideas around idleness, strolling, slowness, taking your time, ennui, boredom, delay, loitering, resting and dreaming. These ideas are widely thought of as being intrinsically at odds with how the rest of the world functions, and despised for it. However, throughout history, great thinkers and revolutionary social movements have plugged into a different way of thinking on the subject: that idleness is not a vi...ce preventing success, but in fact the very key to a good existence. Within Sarah’s images she explores this serene and meditative quality, granting them a moment’s pause within the rush of passing time. 04.01.2022 I’m curating an exhibition called ‘Gathering in the Light’, featuring the work of Stephen Spurrier and David Usher in the main gallery at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery from Saturday 05 December 2020 to Sunday 24 January 2021.. the last days have been about checking out what work we have (there’s a lot of work) and exploring how it all sits together.. it happens in this super wild, lay it all out kind of way... believe it or not, it’s all coming together well

02.01.2022 Throwback to David Usher’s exhibition ‘The Places We Go’, I love this work, titled ‘The place in the horizon (the room in the field), more lovely works from this show can be seen via the link in bio. David Usher 'The place in the Horizon (the room in the field)', 2020, acrylic on canvas, 46 x 41cm $850... @the_david_usher #australianpainting #toowoomba #toowoombaregion #arttoowoomba

02.01.2022 Another from the recent series by Russell Shakespeare of David Usher on his family property in St George called Dromore. Russell and David have been friends since they were 15, it’s nice to see this collaboration unfold. Russell has consistently taken photographs of David’s work, and they’ve also been known to do the odd building project together as well... got to love a good, old, friend. 02.01.2022 Kyle Jenkins says his work ‘Brace’ refers to ‘radical painting’ out of the 80s which asks how small an amount do you have to do to make an artwork an artwork - that could also look like nothing. Stay tuned for a video of Kyle talking about the work. ‘Brace’ 2020 acrylic on canvas, 94 x 61cm $1600 ... #kylejenkins #radicalpainting #australianpainting #painting #arttoowomba #alexandralawsongallery #creativecbdtoowoomba @walton_stores
