19.01.2022 Alexandra Primary Encouragement Award Recipient Billie’s citation from classroom teacher Meg Holohan: It is an honour to nominate Billie Bermingham as Alexand...ra Primary School’s recipient of the Rotary Primary School Encouragement Award. We thank the Rotary club of Alexandra for their continued support of our learning community. The award encourages our students to pursue lifelong learning and reach their potential. Billie is a natural leader, who has the respect and confidence of her peers. She is always willing to help her fellow students both in the classroom and in the school yard. Billie strives to achieve her best in all tasks she undertakes and never shies away from a challenge. Her ability to recognise and act on the needs of others is to be commended. Billie is an excellent role model for the students of Alexandra Primary, regularly leading the school assemblies (when permitted), showing guests around our new facilities and setting the standard of behaviour on a daily basis. Her kind and caring nature, along with her dedication to her schoolwork, make her a worthy candidate of this award. Congratulations, Billie!

19.01.2022 We have had a report of a collision near Spring Creek Road Koriella. Police are in attendance.

19.01.2022 Sunday sleep in? No chance! Our volunteers were out at 0725hrs this morning to clear a tree from the Maroondah Highway south of Dom Dom Saddle. While it doesn’t... look too big here, the large green tree was in a tricky position and took a lot of work to clear. Heavy morning traffic also needed to be managed, and we were able to get one lane moving quickly. Crews were out until after 1000hrs. We’re pleased to say drivers passing by were patient and slowed to 40km/h or slower - thank you! Here’s a couple of friendly tips to keep yourself safe on the road in similar circumstances: Never drive under fallen trees across the road, even if there’s room. It’s unsafe and risky, with serious consequences if something goes wrong Please always obey the signs, handsignals and instructions of traffic controllers. We promise we won’t hold you up any longer than we have to! While Facebook is a great communication tool, don’t rely on social media for road hazard updates. Download the VicEmergency App, and always be prepared for conditions to change without warning.

18.01.2022 Buxton assists with Round Bales fire at Taggerty This afternoon, Buxton was responded to a fire along the Taggerty-Thornton Road to assist Taggerty with a fire... that ignited several round bales of hay and grass. The fire resulted from an item of farm machinery and was quickly brought under control but not before a number of newly baled round bales had caught fire. The fire was initially responded to by Taggerty and Thornton brigades and additional resources from Alexandra, Acheron and Eildon were then responded. The Buxton tanker was requested later to help with the difficult job of extinguishing the bales. Alexandra and Buxton also wet down a series of burnt lines of unbaled hay that was raked ready to be baled. Tractors were used to pull the bulk of the bales apart while hose crews wet down the burning hay and used hand-tools to ensure each bale was fully extinguished. A local brigade Quick-Fill was used to refill tankers from a dam within the fire area. Vehicles attending: Thornton Ultra-Light Tanker, Taggerty Tanker 1, Acheron Tanker 1, Alexandra Tanker 1, Eildon Tanker 1, and Buxton Tanker 2.

15.01.2022 Sunday 28 February 7:30pm 2021 Update: Victoria Police remove and charge protestors, contractors were able to retrieve their equipment from the coupe. However p...rotestors have returned, DELWP removed a large concrete drum that protestors where going to use to chain themselves to. Sunday 28 February 11:30am 2021 Police Search and Rescue to remove Tree Sitters blocking access to Snobs Creek Timber Harvesting Coupes. Local VicForest road contractor Darren Bell said that anti-logging activists had blocked access to a logging coupe on Barnewall Plains Rd where he was working and could not gain access to his and other contractors equipment. The anti-logging activists had cut a tree down, dug a hole on the middle of the road placed the tree in it and guyed it to the seasonal road closure gate that they had closed. They then climbed the tree and were sitting at the top, he said. Mr Bell said that it was illegal to close the road and that to gain access to his Grader, Roller, Water Cart Truck and 3 Gravel Trucks would mean removing the tree that tree sitters are in. He said this is costing him and other contractors $1,000's of dollars a day of which the taxpayer will have to pay, along with wages of Police that have attended. He said, that by Murrindindi Shire supporting the activists it is going to end up costing jobs locally and businesses leaving the area. He said, Police tried to talk the tree sitters into coming down and charges would be dropped but they refused. So this morning, Sunday, Police Search and Rescue from Melbourne will attend on site to climb and remove the protesters and lay charges. Mr Bell said that the activists and Greens spread misinformation about the use of hardwood timber from our native forests. He said that in general, 90% of the time, when a tree is felled, half of the saw log is used for house and building frames, flooring, window frames, doors and furniture. The next quarter is used for Chep pallets that are used to ship groceries to supermarkets, and consumables all over Australia. The last remaining quarter, being of low grade is used at Maryvale to make Australian paper from wood, the wood commonly known as wood chips. Darren said that if a tree was found to be totally rotten when felled it would be chipped for paper maximizing the use of the timber. So only a quarter of the tree is wood chipped, not three quarters as incorrectly claimed by activists.
