25.01.2022 Hey everyone. Just letting you know Im sitting tight in stage 4, trying to pass the time as best I can! I can still do product orders and make oils, but horse clipping and dog grooming is off the cards for now. I am booking in advance from Monday 14th September, hoping that we are able to move out of stage 4 and get back to some sort of normality. This will still enable us to get Cushings horses sorted before the warm weather arrives and get pups deshedded/tidied up for the warm weather. If you have an appointment scheduled, Ill be sending messages to reschedule your time. If you need any grooming products to maintain your pet during this time, send me a message and I can organise this for you. Stay healthy

23.01.2022 I absolutely cannot deal with how cute these two are. Did I mention coats are coming through early? Last day of summer and these two were ready for their first hair cut already! One subtle workman’s style trace clip and one lion cut for a retiree with cushings. Why the neck on? These horses can’t wear neck rugs because of their incredible manes! This is the clip design that this pony has had in the past and it works well for her. It’s got to be functional above all else.

22.01.2022 Happy solstice! What does that mean? Every day from here on out gets that fraction longer. Coat growth slows to a steady rate. If you clip your horse after solstice, that clip will last most horses without needing clipping again. 20.01.2022 Warm weather is coming and I cant sit still any longer. Our cushings horses and other horses that need clipping for health and welfare reasons will be at risk if they arent clipped before the summer heat. A vet letter stating that clipping is required for animal welfare is required upon booking to make an appointment (no letter, no travel). Of course your horses welfare is the most important thing for me, but these are the current restrictions placed upon us. Thank you so much for understanding.

19.01.2022 Who would have thought these little plastic bottles would be so hard to find! Thanks Covid... I’ve had all the ingredients, but packaging has been a bit tricky for quite some time. I’m finally able to make up some hot oil treatments! Coconut and jojoba hot oils are great for soothing dry skin and adding moisture to a dull and dry coat, but you can also rub straight on to rubbed out shoulders/hips, mix with some water in a spray bottle and use as a shine spray, and put through manes and tails as a super hydrating leave in treatment. $15 each, $12 post (up to 4).

17.01.2022 Think your pony has a thick coat? Check out this cushings mare. Her owner took these today when she had her pre clip wash. I recommend two good shampoos pre clip for a normal coat... that barely even got this girl started! She had her bath at lunch time Thursday for a Friday morning clip - do you think shell be dry in time? Check back soon for her finished photo after shes all clean and tidy. Cushings is more common in older horses, but its treatable and manageable (but not curable). Great for adding moisture and shine to dry skin and dull coats, but amazing treatments for manes and tails too! 16.01.2022 I’ve been calling it his covid tail originally saying I was taking the chance to grow it out, then I’ll do it next week every week. It couldn’t wait any more weeks. In a world where most people put in false tails, we actually have a different issue. The top of his tail is too thick. It is too much for tail bags so it does an annoying pokey outey thing up the top. He’s always rubbing it because it’s thick and hot and itchy. Keeping it done is so better. I admit defeat. Gro...wing it out was a mistake! We like it done. It does need to be shorter but I took 3 off it today and I like to do it bit by bit over a few trims to avoid going too hard and hating it. Today we washed, shaved the dock, raked (he doesn’t tolerate pulling) and trimmed. Before, after washing and after shaving/raking. So much better... tidy without looking like an overdone hack tail. 14.01.2022 The most subtle mane transformation ever. Last year, this mare (not proud to say my mare) had a massive case of *combo mane*. You know what Im talking about... overheated and rubbed out half way, then half a mane that I didnt know what to do with so I just kept it short. Well, I think shes worn a synthetic neck rug for maybe eight hours total in the past twelve months, and today, I pulled her mane! There wasnt much to do... its still thin at the lower half, but after a year of working on repairing combo mane, its nice to have her a bit tidy again. 14.01.2022 I just thought Id share this about charcoal shampoo. Ive been loving it over winter, especially on my own dog, who is black, because they just seem to have a bit more of an odour at this time. Its the constant wet/not quite dry/wet again. I keep this on hand, not as my every day shampoo, but as an optional extra if required or requested, but I can also get it in for you if you want to use it at home. I wanted to show everyone though, because the idea of using a black shampoo on a white dog may seem a little crazy, but it is a natural whitener, and works in place of purple whitening shampoos. Oh... and it smells amazing! My favourite, and the one I use, is the Melanie Newman Salon Essentials Purify range.

Please send me a message to have a chat about your horse if you think theyre not quite standard (they probably are to me). As long as the job can be completed safely, for handler, horse and myself, then we can make it happen. Often its just a matter of giving them more time at the start to get used to the sounds and feel of the clippers before getting started. #proequinegrooms

08.01.2022 Creating a functional clip that incorporates a surgical shave area. Can you guess where this horse had surgery? I started with a clip style that we thought would work well how Id do it on any other horse, then we stood back, did a little umming and ahhing and worked out how to continue it all in to an intentional design that made him a clipped horse, and not a horse with a surgical shave growing back. Leaving the back covered helps them keep condition, cuts down on needing to obsessively check the weather forecast for rugging and helps your feed bill, but we took a lot of coat off, so he is well prepared for his jumping lessons now. #customstyle #thatsanewchallenge #horseclipper #proequinegrooms #thoroughbred #lowleglines

07.01.2022 The same coat that sits at the feet of royals isnt very practical for playing in the garden! Clean and tidy, gently degreased with @melanienewman_salonessentials Purify Collection. Im using so much of this charcoal shampoo over winter. It smells glorious and its cutting down on drying time so the pups love it. Hopefully by the end of winter Ill be able to open my books again to take in some new doggy clients, but for now, if you want to give this a try, Im happy to order it in for you when I order some more... or if any of my clients want it for in between grooms of course. 02.01.2022 Horses must be both CLEAN and DRY for clipping. This should involve a double wash (shampoo, rinse, shampoo, rinse really well, optional conditioner and again rinse really well). Most horses can then have clean rugs on and dry naturally for clipping the next day... but as you can see, this body belongs to a grot! This one has to be done in one day. Worked, washed, walked around chasing sun spots in the wind on lead so she doesnt roll, and then clipped before we run out of daylight or the rain ruins everything! Its not a perfect system, but we always try our hardest to get the job done. Its always best to wash after your clip too. Those pesky hairs are seriously itchy and you dont want those back in your rugs annoying your lovely soft horse. #mudmonster #squeakyclean #preclipbath #postclipbathstoo #proequinegrooms
