20.01.2022 Cardio won’t make you lose weight a calorie deficit will To understand why the above statement holds true we must understand what causes weight loss. Weight loss is generated via a person being in a negative energy balance, this means that the amount of calories a person consumes is less than the amount of calories that are burnt throughout the day from things like: - Exercise ... - NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) - this is any movement generated by the body that you wouldn’t classify as deliberate exercise - BMR - this is the value of energy that would be required for just the bodies vital organs if we were at complete rest - Thermic effect of food - This is the energy required for the digestion of the food you eat, foods high in the macronutrient protein generally have the highest thermic effect. Cardio may induce weight loss however this is only if the person is in negative energy balance, if the person was eating well above their neutral energy balance value whilst still performing cardio weight gain would occur.
