21.01.2022 Just a quick update that we've heard from the air ambulance, whilst they are refuelling in Penang. They are currently on time with their schedule, and Alex is coping very well in flight.
21.01.2022 Alex has landed in Melbourne This is what air ambulance travel looks like
12.01.2022 Friends, being able to pass on photos of Alex being transported out of Islamabad and onto the Air Ambulance en-route to Melbourne has filled our hearts with joy and relief. And this has only been made possible by the generosity of every single donor to the campaign. Thank you just doesn’t seem enough. But from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. I wish I could say that the core team working on this has been able to relax but as Alex’s return to Australia nears, we have conti...nued to consider what costs are looming on the horizon. We have leaned heavily on our network and established that the financial pressure on Maggie & Alex is only just beginning. Whilst extremely lucky to have a comprehensive medical system in Australia ready to accept Alex in Melbourne, this will be an enormous life changing event for both Alex and Maggie, and there will be significant costs that won’t get covered. We are all hopeful for a positive recovery that sees Alex increase his mobility considerably, but we also need to prepare for alternative outcomes. These are outcomes that will be stressful for everyone involved, and despite an absolute safety net in the form of NDIS assistance, being afforded some control over when Alex can come home will be aided enormously by access to immediate funds. We have budgeted for things such as the following: - Home relocation costs - Home modifications (over and above that provided by the NDIS) to accommodate mobility aids - Rental of mobility and transfer aids (to assist moving Alex from bed to chair etc), whilst awaiting permanent equipment form the NDIS - Purchase of a suitable vehicle that can be modified for Alex to access/drive and/or wheelchair accessible taxis, in the mean time - Intensive after-hospital rehabilitation - Carers to assist the family Getting these things in place in a comfortable and timely manner will impact how quickly Alex can go home and life can settle into a new routine for Alex & Maggie. We considered closing this fund and starting up a new fund, but the incredible reach of this campaign would then cease. And you, our precious donors, would also cease receiving updates. So we have made the decision to increase the size of this fund to $320,000 to get Alex back into a home. This process is likely to take 4-6 months. To some this may seem excessive, but if you have had to do the incredibly confronting task of researching the costs that are looming for Maggie & Alex alongside the consideration of what a new type of normal life will be, you will appreciate that this is anything but excessive. The team will endeavour to account for expenditure and keep everyone informed.
11.01.2022 A couple of people have reported issues completing their donations on GoFundMe. We have asked GoFundMe to investigate and they advise that they found reasons ranging from device and browser issues, to issues with the card being used. If you have had issues donating, please contact GoFundMe directly on their help page https://support.gofundme.com/hc/en-us so that they can ensure your donation is accepted. Every donation is precious to us and we'd hate to lose it
09.01.2022 The latest update on Alex: Alex had surgery on Sunday and his medical team advise it went very well. Alex will be monitored closely for the next 6 weeks so it may be some time before we have any major updates. Alex & Maggie thank everyone for their kind thoughts & offers of visits but until they have had time to adjust they ask that visitors wait till they are ready. They look forward to accepting visitors soon
07.01.2022 We are seeing some donations rejected by GoFundMe, most likely due to issues with identification. GoFundMe have policies in place to protect against fraudulent activity and if you cannot be identified (often via an email asking to confirm your email address) or if your email address is found to be bogus then they will reject the donation. Please ensure the name you enter is the same as the name on your credit card, your email address is valid and if you receive an email from GoFundMe asking you to confirm your donation, please respond. You can choose to keep your name private by marking your donation as anonymous, but for governance reasons they need verifiable personal details entered. Thank you
06.01.2022 Just a quick update for this morning. Alex is now in Melbourne, being cared for by the Royal Melbourne Hospital and is currently being assessed as his medical team arrange X-Rays, CT scans and MRIs in preparation for surgery. Alex is in good spirits and his condition has been reported as stable.
03.01.2022 An update from Maggie tonight: Just came from visiting Alex - he's still in the ICU, and still intubated at the moment. The reason he's still intubated is because he's got sputum (gunk) in his lungs. They've just done a bronchoscopy and removed a lot of it (the most they've ever seen). For his own comfort, and at his request, he's being kept sedated while intubated. He will have further respiratory physio tonight and they'll reassess his lungs again tomorrow morning.... In terms of how he can interact, it's difficult to tell sensation, etc., because he is so sedated. Before surgery he could definitely move his arm to his elbow and had some small control over his wrist. This has maintained but not necessarily improved (again hard to tell cause sedated). Thank you Maggie All the love in the world to you and Alex.
03.01.2022 Update from Maggie! In the last 24 hours, alex has progressed from breathing through a tube (necessary for surgery) to 1) an air mask that you would usually use to help someone who snores to 2) oxygen tubes poking lightly into his nose to 3) increasingly extended breaks from oxygen. He is also finally allowed to eat again, so we've got some messina icecream (his favorite) on its way. ... If all goes well he might be permitted to leave intensive care early next week! Visitors still on pause for the moment, but they will let us know as soon as that changes!
