24.01.2022 THE RIGHT DIET IS THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS CREATING A GREAT DOG. It might seem odd to talk about diet under a title of Training Tips, however if you bring a dog... to live into your home - YOU are responsible for ensuring good health of your dog. We can never expect a dog to be able to learn if they are not healthy. and that starts with having a good immune system. A strong immune system is built in the gut Just like with our human children, we need to ensure they have a good diet. Would you allow your children to have take away for every meal I think not! Why? Because we understand that take away food is heavily processed. Commercial dog food is much the same heavily processed and although might once have been real food with good nutrients - the processing system requires heat to be applied and thus changes the nutrient value of the food Another major complication with the Pet Industry is self regulation - This means that there is no official body overseeing the standards nor are there checks on quality control. During 2017 &2018 we have had a few pet food products that caused health issues and even deaths in our pets - and these were actually considered premium products. So what can we do. We believe there is nothing better than giving your dog a raw diet that way you can know what goes into the bowl Although it can seem complicated, really it comes down to the basics of raw meat with cooked veggies and by adding the occasional egg, sardines, yoghurt, oil and some bone. Remember : - Just because you pay more - or that a Brand is marketed with names that make it sound natural or holistic - there is no guarantee that this is better than another.. Processed food is Processed food For interested in knowing more on raw diets, have a look here : https://alfoxton.com.au/raw-diet-for-dogs/ See more

17.01.2022 WHAT TRAINING METHOD IS BEST ? They say with humans that there are about 7 types of intelligence - but schools only teach 3 or perhaps 4 .... those who learn o...utside these methods are then left wanting. The same principle applies with our dogs. Thus if you lock yourself in to using any specific "training method" it will suit some, but NOT others ... This then explains why there are often dogs who becoming bored and distracted especially during classes ... You need to modify your approach to suit your dogs personality. Remember with any training, we are never trying to change the dog... we can only change behaviour.

11.01.2022 Note to my Aussie Family who often ask about products I use... You often see products advertised for worming / fleas etc... Just want to say that I DONT EVER use the brands Bravecto or Nexgard.... I have read some articles that make me nervous about these with Aussie shepherds. Products that I do use if/when needed - Advantage for Flea treatment ( if I see fleas )... Drontal Allwormer Tablets (this covers hookworm, roundworm, whipworm and tapeworm) - perhaps 3 or 4 times a year. Reminder : I don't use heart worm medication for my own dogs. just my opinion!!!

09.01.2022 EXERCISE.. NOT DRUGS. .....CAN IMPROVE YOUR DOGS BEHAVIOUR So you think your dog has bad behaviour ! - Problems like. jumping up and knock...ing people over chewing the architraves.. humping the kids etc.. Often owners complain that their dog suffers from Separation Anxiety, or OCD, or Hyperactive, perhaps even Attention Deficit - these terms can even be bandied around by those in the Veterinary industry. Sometimes the easy solution seems to be lets throw some drugs into the mix, thatll help Drugs used for behavioural problems alter the way the dogs mind is working and can dull the dog so they are less aware of what is happening It is also important to remember that drugs reduce your dogs natural immune system. If used over a long period they can also damage your dogs organs. It would seem a total over-reaction to drug your dog just because it seems easier well easier at least for us You should consider that, if your dogs behaviour is erratic, nervous etc - you should ask yourself - Does my dog get to enjoy their life ? We should not look at the quick fix of giving our dogs drugs so they can cope with life... it is essential that your dog gets to have plenty of exercise both physical and mental exercise, thus he/she can burn off all that excess energy and hence have the chance to chill out and then your dog can enjoy life.

09.01.2022 You'd have thought they'd have forseen it.

09.01.2022 Scary that some random Public Servant can have the ability to lockdown a state for ANY perceived health reasons.... plus treat / detain any Individual that they believe might be a risk to others... only need a REASONABLE risk - hence they need no proof just anyone can decide someone is a problem.... with "indefinite' detention.

08.01.2022 For those who asked about the flat collars we use for our dogs... I have attached their website... I find for the average sized dog such as mine .... the Wide Medium is a good size which is $32... Have found them to be a reliable company and the quality is very good, particularly strong clips.... We have twice got Keeda back quickly when she moved down town with our son, and same happened with Giget when she moved down town.... The public is always happy to ring the phone number on the collar..... https://petcollars.com.au

04.01.2022 Making Difficult Things Normal. A new covid world ! Covid has changed the way we are doing just about everything and this includes the way our dogs will be ab...le to interact in our human world 2020 and our dogs are not mixing with people, it is hard to have them meet new dogs or go to different places. instead we are encouraged to move ONLINE The trouble is our dog’s don’t understand the Internet.. We need to remember that dogs are physical creatures..... they learn by smell, touch and perhaps even to roll in horse poo. So now us humans have been released from our lockdown it is time to get our dogs out and about to make up for lost time. Get back into the outdoor classes. Find new challenges.. Burn off their energy at the beaches and parks. Us humans will also have to work harder to source new ways to build confidence in many of these young dogs who have missed some of the crucial socialising See more

03.01.2022 Catch up for families who's girls came to the Sat Playgroup

03.01.2022 Independent studies often give surprising results.... I just have a policy - for myself, my kids, my animals.... I always question the use drugs or chemicals..... and never because the doctor/vet says...."just in case..." and never because it is the manufacturers recommendation..... Rodney Habib is from Planet Paws (Facebook) - along with Dr Karen Becker they are having independent research conducted on food and drugs for our pets.

01.01.2022 IMPORTANCE OF THE FIRST YEAR . .. SET UP A DOG FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIFE .. Puppies learn quick - hence why their first year is so important . Ideally, your... pup’s breeder has imprinted positive experiences during the 3-10 week stage to set puppies up for their new homes. Then the challenge for families is to take their pups and teach them how to live in our human world. Remember also, that our world can often seem a bit weird and wonderful for dogs. . In the first 12 months humans can a huge impact on the long term success of having a family pet - however the focus should not be about any typical idea of obedience, after all dogs already know how to SIT and DROP. Instead, to set dogs up for long term success, families need to concentrate on two main objectives. 1. build the dogs self confidence and 2. develop a bond between the Dog and Family. The good news is that both of these objectives can be achieved at the same time. Families first learn to understand and accept their dog’s personality by observing how they play and react to their new homes. Then exposing pups to a wide range of different environments to increase their understanding of our human world. So just like the saying it takes a village to raise a child, the same can apply with family dogs. When dogs meet new people in varied situations we build their acceptance to strange places. Mixing with a variety of dogs and other animals teaches our pet to be adaptable and deal with distractions. It is up to the human members to teach their dogs about our human world. When you get a pup. make the time and make the commitment. That first year will pass so quickly !
