25.01.2022 So so so, one thing that's been popping up in classes is how quickly some students expect to get a completed, perfect work finished and I just wanted to spend a couple of minutes here reiterating that making art isn't just about the finished product, it's about all the steps before that product as well. Too often we forget that things take time, and even more often we forget that things should be fun, ESPECIALLY when making art. So here are a couple of photos of a recent wo...rk I completed for an exhibition launching this coming Friday. There are 9 or so photos here and each photo was taken after a layer was completed. This could mean a layer of mixed media, a layer of gesso, a layer of lights or darks, but a layer none the less. That means that this painting took 9 sessions of say 3hrs each, give or take... If my studio wasn't attached to my bedroom then that means this painting could have potentially taken up to 8 weeks to complete! That's a long bloody time, but if you're only able to set aside 2 hours a week, then it's what you have to give yourself. Please, be kind to yourselves and your art practice and trust in the process. 24.01.2022 Another day another bloody treat from Anthony. Star Wars is always a win if you ask me, particularly where baby yoda is concerned.... Anthony prints out the images he want to use, his drawing isn't where he wants it to be, so we print and cut and glue and colour. We make what his heart desires with a little touch of me pushing a bit harder to make it just a bit brighter, a bit more. Ya know?... You don't have to do everything yourself. 24.01.2022 Today was the start of a brand new posting with @regisagedcare homes. 8 of their residents showed up for an hour of mess making and fun, each one insisting that they are terrible artists upon entry. As you can see from the results, it didn't really matter because colour on a canvas pretty much never looks bad. Really! These techniques are not my own, I learnt them all from my mumma @degillett without whom, well I guess I wouldn't exist... ... 22.01.2022 Last week I had the privilege of working with Saint Eugenes College for a 6 hour Steampunk inspired Assemblage Sculpture workshop. 21.01.2022 A few photos from this day in my life should you care to see!?... I started out @artstreecreations with a psychedelic dreamboat octopus a' dreams, continued the set up for a mangrove, looked out the window of a plane, and spattered some jungle... in that class we also have a sunset, two portraits, a glorious waterfall, a dreamscape and finally a raucous garden. V. Busy V. FUN. Such a great class, an incredibly beautiful, supportive room of women. ... Then on to Essie the Great, a wonderful soul who is painting a truly great portrait. And blessedly, I round the day out @sheldoncollege with the best bunch of students a gal could ask for. Featured here are just two of the works, one of the most hilarious eagles I've ever seen... and Noor's finished piece following our analytical drawing work. Noor drew this by using life drawing analysis skills to place each line and mark, a life changing tool for any artist to have. Using colour theory we played around with our theme and I am so damn proud I could squish my own face off!! 18.01.2022 Aaaaaand we are back! Well, we have been back but I've been keeping myself to myself for a wee bit... was struggling with the eternal 'what am I doing with my liiiiiiife???' question while covid did its thing.. I was rendered speechless. What does art matter to a society locked in doors? How valuable is art?... What is the damn point of it all? Why make art when people are fighting for basic human rights? I dont have the answer to any of these questions, but my students out at Sheldon College thanked me for always having a good time with them and for continuing to teach them exciting things. My supervisors said they love hearing the laughter come from our classroom. Maybe that's enough, maybe it isn't, I truly don't know But i do know that picking up the paintbrush unlocks my voice. When I create I am boundless, I can not be locked up. Creating art is a priceless act. Through art we exist. Here are some of my students and I as we celebrate the end of a weird semester with the creation of some weird monsters. 15.01.2022 2021 has officially kicked off! Im back teaching at Sheldon College as a part of their Australian School of the Arts Program, and life couldn't be sweeter. Growing up in the bush of far-North Queensland I had no idea that schools like this existed. A specialist art program, with funding and a full stock room!! Whaaaaat???!... 15.01.2022 Finished this one last week but wanted to chuck it up here in da feed for us all to admire once again. There's been a change in the way I make art, I'm less unsure about my ability and much more in tune with the endless possibilities which could happen next... It's like I'm flirting with the ideas and performing for my canvas, it's my fan, my biggest challenge, the only opinion I truly care about. What I love about painting live is that the intimacy of the performance remain...s, yet it's multiplied by however many sets of eyes are watching it happen. It's a bloody fun time. 14.01.2022 In honour of this beautiful and damn glorious day please enjoy some flowers and plant ovaries that I have helped to create with the gentle assistance of sunshine, earth, and the divine help of whatever it is that allows me to have ideas and turn them into art. Growing a garden filled with beautiful things has helped me so much over these last couple of months. I didn't realise how impatient I was until I became distressed over seeds not sprouting over a three day period. I h...ad forgotten how good it feels to sweat in the sunshine and transform a piece of land from forgotten into first place. I didnt realise that a new growth on any one of my plant babies has the potential to lift my mood from sad to glad within a split second. Creating, teaching, and growing all require vigilance, thankfulness and a hell of a lot of resilience. I've killed plants, and bugs, used the wrong fertiliser and have since painted over that canvas, but the lessons remain as do the seeds for next season.
