08.01.2022 **PARVO ALERT** Are you dogs vaccinations up to date? We have unfortunately been seeing multiple positive Canine parvovirus cases recently! Parvo is a highly infectious virus that attacks the gastrointestinal tract of dogs. Un-vaccinated dogs are particularly susceptible to contracting parvo as this virus can survive in the environment for months and it only takes a very small amount to infect an exposed animal.... Once contracted, intensive treatment is required for the best chance of survival. Left untreated the mortality rate exceeds 90%. Avoid a parvo scare by ensuring your dogs vaccinations are up to date, and that your puppy receives a full course of initial vaccinations- 1 is not enough! The age at which your puppy receives their vaccinations is also important as there is a critical time when the mothers natural antibodies are beginning to subside, and this is the point where we need to intervene with a vaccination to ensure your puppy stays protected. Unfortunately are still seeing many heartbreaking cases of parvo at the moment. The first signs of parvo virus are general lethargy and inappetence (off colour or flat) followed by vomiting and/or diarrhoea. The earlier treatment commences, the better the chance of survival so if in doubt, please call your vet for advice.
