24.01.2022 Good morning friends - whether you are Parenting, Teaching or otherwise Caring for little people today, #RememberThis <3 Alice #EarlyChildhoodTeachers #EarlyChildhoodEducators

22.01.2022 These days, all our early childhood organisations have partners. They're the relationships that help our teams work more effectively, more comprehensively. But what about YOU? As teachers, educators, carers...who do you partner with each day? Do you partner up with Kindness? With Hope? With Listening? Who supports YOU in your miracle work? <3 Alice

20.01.2022 There is something WONDROUS about the work of early childhood education, teaching and caring. The relationships we build with little children, have the POWER to allow the child to be and accept ALL of who they are. Through play, talk, and - most of all - wholehearted listening: this is not only a gift to the child. But a gift for all humanity. <3 Alice

19.01.2022 Oh yes!!! This is WHY teaching and working with babies and little children - who are still finding their "speech" - is such radical work. It requires listening of extraordinary commitment. A commitment to noticing and honoring the rich language evident in the child's curiosity, their attention and their body. It requires a commitment to Freedom of Speech to the highest order.

18.01.2022 So...finally...we're moving toward all Early Childhood Teachers requiring registration. Coming from a profession (nursing) where registration is heavily regulated, I think this has to be a good move - the recognition that teachers who work with little children will be held to the same professional standards as their peers in other educational settings. But...interesting to note that in the report there's no mention of the relationship between pay parity for Early Childhood ...Teachers and the capacity to demonstrate these standards. Especially given that ECTs are typically not only responsible for a "class" of children, but also oversee the practice of whole teams of staff, and whole-of-centre program design. Most ECTs are working at an advanced practitioner level much earlier in their career than their primary and secondary teaching peers. How will this unfold? 17.01.2022 Children who cry, meltdown or "tantrum" are NOT unfathomable! It's really very simple: children share with us the very human experience of sometimes feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, disappointed or even frightened. Humiliating, ignoring or poking fun at the people we love does not create strong or resilient relationships. Our strongest and healthiest relationships take place with people who seek to understand and acknowledge (even when the source of the problem can't be fixed...). Relationships are built not by DOING differently (its not a "technique"), but by LISTENING differently. #EmpathyWins <3 Alice

15.01.2022 Over the past 25 years, like me, you have probably noticed some amazing changes in the landscape of infant and early childhood education, support and care. Stronger shifts to nature-based and child-centred approaches to programs. We've seen changes in the ways we consider gender, ethnicity and power in our early childhood settings. But, there are so many of us still looking for the final revolution - the big, public conversation that acknowledges the work of linking-up and in...vesting in CHILDREN'S EARLY RELATIONSHIPS. If you understand that real investment in children depends on more than a beautiful classroom, more than a well-funded group of researchers, this page is for YOU. For decades we've been doing the careful, gentle, heart-felt work of protecting, restoring and repairing children's earliest relationships with families, services, schools and communities. Yet our expertise in this work is still far too easily misunderstood and dismissed. In the last 10 years, there's been an explosion of research which supports what we've been saying for decades: that if we only get one thing right, it needs to be the early relational environments of children. This is not a new issue, or a new angle. It is the issue that links all others together. This page is for the ordinary, every-day people like you and me, who work with babies, children and their families and who are ready to take our place in the conversation about what matters in children's early relational environments and experiences. Please join me, share your story. Together we can build a narrative that can finally be heard.

14.01.2022 And that's on top of the substantial barriers highlighted in the Times article: Many parents, policymakers and voters still don't understand the value or complexity of preschool teachers' work and view it as merely "babysitting." Undervaluing historically female jobs exacerbates this perception gap. And the biggest challenge: How to pay for better-prepared preschool teachers (who today rank at the 2nd percentile in pay among female workers) when many parents already struggle to pay for preschool and child care. https://www.usnews.com//make-higher-education-more-accessi #EarlyChildhoodTeachers #EarlyChildhoodEducation

14.01.2022 There are more pressures on early childhood professionals than ever before. For this reason, it is important to consider the simple, everyday ways you can integrate healthy, gentle touch into the normal interactions you have with babies each day. Connecting and communicating should be something that brings a little of the joy into our roles: rather than being another ‘job’ to tick off on the list. https://everychildrising.com.au/importance-touch-child-dev/

11.01.2022 This is one of the newest studies to show how infant cues influence adult attention and responsiveness at the neurological level. In turn, it also shows how our responsiveness as adults has a distinct effect on a baby’s brain activity and learning. Perhaps most importantly, this study confirms that play-based activities and care in infancy are more than simply ‘a bit of fun’ to fill in the time till children are old enough for so-called ‘real’ learning. The richness, depth and influence of our earliest interactions continues to validate the calls for training and resources that value early childhood care and support as much as those for older children. https://everychildrising.com.au/keep-your-eye-on-this-how-/

08.01.2022 Every so often, a video of a baby comforting and helping another baby does the viral rounds. In some ways, the comments that follow are as fascinating as the video itself. Typically, the comments sections are filled with debate. Are the baby’s attempts to comfort another the result of random reflexive movement or unconscious imitation, or do they indicate fully-fledged human empathy? These debates are so fascinating because they highlight our interest in understanding the minds of babies. In other words, what (if anything) is going on in there? https://everychildrising.com.au/are-babies-capable-of-empa/

03.01.2022 We can't say we haven't been warned.

02.01.2022 There is a growing number of resources to support relationship-building with pre-schoolers and older children. However, there is not the same support for teams working with babies and very little children. Mostly, we’re having to take programs designed for older children and water them down. But, babies are not miniature children. They are not pre-schoolers in-waiting. ... You know this. You also know we need resources, ideas and language that reflects the needs of babies and little children. https://everychildrising.com.au/free-webinar-early-childho/
