25.01.2022 My absolute fav photo from our last minute wedding in January this year. You can feel the love through the photo. A hair brain idea actually turned into wedding in 4 DAYS! And what a wedding it was. It was so beautiful watching Fiona & Nick tie the knot underneath the twinkly fairy lights with their nearest and dearest.... Some amazing vendors jumped on the bandwagon at the last minute and a 42oC a day made for a perfect evening. 24.01.2022 A LITTLE BIT LEFT FIELD You’ll see from the majority of my work that I don’t really do rustic farm weddings, but when Tega came to me with her vision and a month to pull it off by God did we create something beautiful. Her wedding palette was such a beautiful mix vintage & modern, balancing each other out in such a way the tablescape still looked very luxe.... The stunning crystal glassware and floral votives down the centre marriage harmoniously with the wooden tables and white bentwood chairs. Despite the fact this wedding happened on the lockdown weekend, it was such an honour to be a part of and I think Tega and Tom for that so much. 23.01.2022 NEW YEAR, NEW START I think we can all safely say we're all happy to be out of 2020! I can speak personally there, I'm so excited to be in a new year, with a new perspective, new mindset, new confidence and new ready to go attitude. The wedding expo on Sunday was such a great launch into 2021 and it was so awesome to see the confidence of so many brides is on the up.... While some had booked their venues, the majority hadn't and so I thought I'd put together a quick 4 step list for all you couples who might be a little bit lost. 1. Set your date - essential! This will determine so many things from the seasonal colours, seasonal blooms, and which vendors are available. 2. Pick your style - classic, traditional, fairytale, vintage, modern. Go onto your Pinterest board (cos we all know you have one :P) and look at the general jist - you'll see it straight away. This will determine the vendors you pick, the venue you pick, the flowers you choose, the furniture you pick. 3. Write a mock guest list - and I mean everyone. Make a full list of every single person you want to invite (including overseas and interstate.) This gives you a number to work it so you can go to venues who can house the amount of guests you might possibly have. 4. Pick your venue in accordance with 1-3! These 3 things will definitely make choosing your venue a lot easier, or certainly narrow it down. This shoot pictured was my take on modern spring, but as always with me, with a classic base. It is so important to go dress shopping with an open mind. Get one of every style and try them all on. What might look amazing on the hanger may not suit your body shape, and the dress you openly vetoed might be absolutely perfect. Talk to your dress shop assistants, they know exactly whi...ch questions to ask to help you pick the perfect dress. On a side note, it is also super important to note the date of your wedding, the weather and the venue as this may also impact your dress choice. Will it be on grass or inside? Will the dress drag? Will it be wet? Will there be a walkway or stairs? You may want a beautifully long train and while this will look stunning down an aisle or on stairs, if it’s been raining or might rain this may not be the best choice. 19.01.2022 WHATS MY STYLE? I'd say it's definitely evolved over the last year or so but the main ethos has been the same. Something quite traditional with a twist of modern. Finding that sweet spot between something timeless, with something a little bit quirky. And black. I love black. And you betcha I'll try to get a bit of black in anywhere I can at your event!... This set up was very bright and colourful, and the black came through the cutlery adding that little bit of extra luxe. Black doesn't have to be in your face, using it in a subtle way can really make your event pop in such a luxurious way. 15.01.2022 There is something about a knotted napkin that elevates a tablescape in just under 2 seconds, and that’s just how long it takes my friend Ellie from @elleventsperth to tie one - I’m about 5 seconds! My business @aliceheydonevents is a one man band but it takes more than one person to take a wedding or event come together, especially on the day where you need more than one set of hands to tie napkins, set tables, polish glassware, put out name cards, sweep floors to ...name just a few things! I have a select number of people that I trust implicitly who know what they’re doing, who have been in the industry for a long amount of time, who are reliable, professional and I only have to give them the run sheet for them to know what to do. I may not always, but a lot of the time on the day I do need that extra help, and I’m so grateful that I have amazing friends in the industry I can call on, and vice versa. It’s important to note then that I always account for at least one extra staff member to help out on the day and this is reflected in my pricing. I think it’s quite important to let you know this just in case you were wondering where some of your hard earned money goes as I like to be as transparent as possible with all my clients. I remember when I was walking around the twilight @swanvalleyopenday last year and thought how amazing would it be to wait until darkness and get married under a canopy of fairy lights? One year on and a dream became a reality. Strings of fairy and festoon lights illuminated the ceremony space, while battery operated lights lined the aisle. How amazing is it that a sp...ace can quite literally look night and day different, and how much does lighting make such a difference. I do think that lighting, music and projections just give that extra wow factor to events and that is why it is one of the first things I think about when I’m creating styling plans. They absolutely transform a space and create that amazing vibe as soon as you walk in the door. 14.01.2022 SUSTAINABLE WEDDINGS I love balloons & what can be created with them, I just hate that they're aren't environmentally friendly. I hate that something so beautiful makes so much mess & hurt in the world's ecosystem. I hate that manufacturing companies market their balloons as biodegradable when they're not. I decided very early that I wanted to operate as sustainably as possible. I know that the events industry is an absolute stickler for using something once so if ...I can do my part all the better. Here are a few tips to make your wedding or event more sustainable: 1. NO BALLOONS - flowers are beautiful, smell stunning & are biodegradable. Give them to your guests when they leave, give them to local aged care homes or hospitals to brighten someone's day. 2. NO FLOWERS - if you want to go 1 step further, opt for potted plants that can be taken & reused at home. 3. GO PAPERLESS (or as paperless as you can) - paper is certainly biodegradable but using less is certainly more. Invest in a wedding website. Group things together like putting place card names on menus. Only have x3 menus per table instead of 1 per person. You could even ask to print on recycled paper! 4. DON'T GO ACRYLIC - especially for place names - no one takes them home & it's such a waste of your money. Look into alternatives for welcome signs e.g. painted cardboards or fabrics. 5. SUSTAINABLE VENDORS - make an effort to ask & choose vendors who work with other local vendors & companies, e.g. caterers who work with local growers & farms, or florists who work with local flower farms. The more local, the less carbon footprint. 6. EDIBLE FAVOURS - your guests will thank you for it! No one cares about a printed stubby holder with your name son it, no one cares about monogrammed coasters with your date on it. Just make sure your edible favour boxes or bags are paper. 11.01.2022 One of photos I really wanted was a backlit ceremony shot. Using the darkness to our advantage, we were able to get the most amazing photo. That beautiful balance between light and dark, showing the fairy lights in their full glory. 11.01.2022 END OF AN ERA Safe to say today is a sad day. A sad day but an exciting scary one. Today is my last day at my paying full time job. Yep. I took the leap. I’m petrified, I’m scared & let’s face it thinking what on earth have I done (!) but I’m also so excited about the future and what it holds.... 11.01.2022 BLENDING IN I loved that @sea_and_rein didn’t try and go against the grain - literally! She worked with the natural landscape to enhance the beautiful set of tree trunks on site to create such a focal point for such a beautiful ceremony space. It is important to choose a venue that you already love the vibe and style of so that the vendors you choose can go in and enhance what’s already there. Unless you’re in a ballroom that you can completely change from... head to toe with draping and backdrops etc. choosing a venue that already suits your wedding style is so helpful. Its also so helpful to have site visits with your stylist or florist so they know what they’re working with. As your planner it’s so important for me because I can see how the venue is laid out, what furniture they have, how they operate, where things come from and how the staff regularly work. 10.01.2022 HAPPY LONG WEEKEND LOVERS Hope everyone has had a lovely long weekend, enjoyed the sunshine but also appreciated the rain! I know our front lawn certainly has! Tony not so much.... We managed get away for a night which is very rare, and it was so nice to turn my phone off for 24 hours, read my book and have a gin and tonic in a lovely quiet natural setting.... I really need to take some more time out, or make more time to slow down, but something always seems to get in the way. I can only hope that as time goes on, I learn to find that balance between giving 50% to my businesses, but also 50% to myself and my family. Back to it tomorrow! 07.01.2022 WHAT IS A STYLIST? It's something I get asked a lot, and something that gets confused with a coordinator, a planner and a florist quite often. A coordinator is someone who is there making sure things happen on the day the way they were planned to.... A stylist is someone who deals with an aesthetic, the design, the pretty bit effectively. Making sure everything comes together in a cohesive manner so it's not confusing to the eye. A stylist can also do florals, planning and on the day coordination but you have to ask them first to make sure it's in their scope of work. A florist specifically deals with flowers, while some do a bit of styling. They know colour palates, names of flowers, what’s in season and what will for your budget for the flowers you want to have. They also know how to arrange them in stunningly beautiful ways. For me I do 2, but I don't do florals. I love flowers, they're beautiful but I'll never have the eye to do them so I outsource to some amazing people to do that bit. But this is the kicker. I will always talk to my client first to work out what their style is, where their venue is and what kind of wedding they want to have. Then I'll go and source those vendors that suit them best, that will give them the look they want, it's not a cookie cutter process because every wedding and event is so different. Here I wanted something very fresh and classic so I went to Veronica because I knew she would be the best person for the job. I went to Lara and Dan because I know they have very classic furniture pieces. I went to Daniela because she is so talented at calligraphy. 02.01.2022 HAPPINESS THROUGHOUT Obviously one of my favourite photos from this wedding, despite the fact I look like I’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards - it was a very hot day! Watching my clients see their wedding or event for the first time, seeing their reaction is just the most amazing feeling and I’m so grateful and honoured to be a part of such a special day.... Obviously the reaction I’m going for is shock, awe and utter amazement but I’ll settle for sublime happiness ;) I always want my clients to have the most amazing experience with me, not just on the day but throughout as well. We talk so much over the process that I wouldn’t have it any other way, and I want you to look back on your time with me as a smooth, easy, friendly, exciting but heavily structured and organiser process. I want you to know and feel as though everything is under control from start to finish, so you don’t need to stress the week before or on the days knowing that everything is ticking along nicely in the background and all you have to do sip champagne.
