16.01.2022 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGS YOUR CHANCE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Part 2 Speaking of those Executive and Committee Members: to what extent, if at all, do they get out... of their pit areas, infields and offices to actually mix and talk with the most important members of the speedway community their customers, the spectators and club members? All too often it is obvious that those in an official position spend the vast majority of their time either racing, or executing the other duties of their job. And as a result, they run the risk of becoming too cocooned in their own world and lose touch with the reality of those on whom they rely for the vast majority of their club’s revenue. In selecting those to serve on the club committee, it is important to choose those who have specific talents that can be of service to the club. People who KNOW how to grade and maintain a track, people with EXPERTISE in the media, someone who will be GOOD AT ORGANISING the very important social side of the club. The list goes on. It is no longer acceptable to simply have as committee members those same old mates with whom you race. You need good people with specific talents. Consider also the FRONT DOORS of your club and speedway. By this, I mean the primary contact points between the Business and the Customer. In the case of Speedway, there are essentially two elements. Firstly, the club Facebook page/s and Website. It is absolutely essential that these front doors display a professional and effective image. Regular reports, photos, track and race information will be the essential items which will attract members and spectators. All too often, the Facebook page can degenerate into simply a toy for the admins and any sense of professionalism is lost, together with innumerable customers. It may simply turn into a buy, swap and sell page, of little or no interest to club members and spectators. Worst of all, when there may be a crisis of some sort your fans, members and spectators will naturally look to your Facebook page for information and guidance. And these crisis events DO occur, as we are now acutely aware! Take COVID for example. Please give your spectators and members some information! The absolute worst thing that you can do in the face of an emergency is to say or do NOTHING. Too often, this occurs on the club Facebook page, and the outcome is that your customers are left to imagine the worst-case scenario and will generally walk away. The second essential Front Door is a good Media Rep. Someone who professionally handles regular and timely media releases, writes follow up stories for the media and is in partnership with a selected person, or group of professional speedway photographers. The same person can usually handle inputs to the club’s programs and newsletters. With an increasing focus on video rather than just still pictures, a professional videographer is always an excellent addition to the club’s media entourage. Importantly, does the Media Rep cover ALL of the available media, including radio and TV, or just provide a one size fits all submission to selected newspapers? Consider also your race programming. Is it keeping pace with the times, or just offering more of the same? Do your meetings start at the advertised time, and finish within the curfew limit? Is the club actually gaining members, or is your membership progressing backwards? And if so, why? Is the club and its executive continually striving for excellence, to exceed expectations, or are they satisfied to be stuck in the same level of mediocracy? Be aware that a Change of the Guard every few years is an opportunity for new people to bring new and fresh thinking to the table and for your club to be able to move on from the rut that it may be stuck in following a prolonged period under the same administration, starved of innovative ideas. So, ask yourself this question: IN THE PAST SEASON, UNDER THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION, HAS YOUR CLUB GONE FORWARDS, STAGNATED, OR GONE BACKWARDS? There are several factors to consider financial, member and car numbers, track facilities, spectator numbers, etc. And most importantly, have you had a good look at your front door lately? One final word. It’s always a good idea at AGMs to expect nominees for all executive positions, particularly President and Secretary, to give a brief 5-minute presentation of their plans and strategies for the coming year. That way, the voting members will have some idea of what the nominee can deliver, not just that they are a good person, liked by some members. Any person who is proposing to nominate for an executive position should have their 5-minute speech, outlining their strategies for the club over the coming year. What changes would they introduce? What can we do better? What new ideas do they have? In particular, how do they plan to run the club and track post- COVID-19? Because that world will be very VERY different! And if a current member of the executive is re-nominating, then they should outline their achievements for the last year, and detail their strategies for the coming season. At this time, sentiments such as I’m perfect, we’re doing brilliantly, and there will be more of the same next year. simply won’t wash! So, my friends, keep these lessons from history in mind at your Club’s AGM, and choose carefully those who will lead you into the next year. Because your club’s future in a new and strange post-Covid world, may well depend on it. ..Ray Read October, 2020

02.01.2022 Dear Off-road racing friends, Thank you to everyone who made racing possible for the second half of this (shitty) year. We were #2 in the TJM Dennis Zaglas short course this weekend, but being able to participate in racing - something we really enjoy as a family - makes us feel number #1! A shout out to the "house husbands" who worked so hard and well in the canteen together this weekend. You know who you are :)
